"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Matthew 6:33 NIV
This verse talks about a well known promise, but for it to happen exists one condition to be met. Seek the kingdom of God and his justice first.
What does that mean? To me, seeking God first means to , before anything , do His Will. So, all the other things will be added in our lives.
And What is His Will? That we keep his commandments, in other words, practice the Word. In general, obedience is demanded in the whole Bible.
"Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
John 14:21 NIV
It isn't wrong to have doubts on why we should obey, I myself didn't understand the reason. I used to think that God was forbidding and trying to deprive us of happiness. That isn't true, I was reminded of the time when I lived without rules and did whatever I wanted. I even had a little pleasure but soon enough I felt sad and miserable again.
During that period, I did all my heart desired. Even so, I was always bothered by an empty feeling, boredom, a weird sensation that something was missing. And it was, the Word of God made me get born again, nothing can make me truly happy except being obedient to Him.
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
John 10:10 NIV
God didn't forbid us to have fun, he forbid us from harming ourselves and others. Being disobedient doesn't attract anything besides trouble, meanwhile obedience brings all kinds of blessings. All the law is resumed in two commandments:
" Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”".
Matthew 22:37-40 NIV
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Matthew 6:33 NIV
He guarantees that when you obey, your necessities will be taken care of by Him. God will take care of you, He will never abandon you.
"God is not human, that he should lie,
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?"
Numbers 23:19 NIV
Are you tired from having to worry about everything? Trust God! Live according to His Word and see for yourself that He is loyal.
"The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, without painful toil for it."
Proverbs 10:22 NIV
Do you wish to put in practice what you just learned? Ask God to help you, alone we try but we can't change ourselves. It's God who convinces us we need to change and He is the only one who can transform us from water to wine!
"“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
John 15:5 NIV
