Kara
Kara opened her eyes to nothing.
The weak warmth of the sun gave only a hint of summer. The Alaskan air stayed chilly.
She longed for a true summer at the beach. The sand between her toes, swimming in the sea, and the heat of the sun.
"If only..."
After a few moments, her heart began to ache and ears began to ring. She clutched her chest and breathed heavily with excitement...and fear.
It was the sign that your soulmate has been discovered. Your time together will begin soon.
"I officially have a soulmate!"
Her fear, however, crept up to remind her what year it was. Her mind wandered to the details of the Mythos Treaty.
"Every fifth year, during the summer solstice, a selected creature from each species will be betrothed to a different species."
Every solstice was when creatures "found" their mates. Winter solstices were everyone's favorite. No risks! Summer solstices sucked on the "fives". Too much tension.
She got out of bed worrying and wondering...
"God, what if I'm mated to a vampire?!" Kara whimpered.
"Stop it. Stop it. You could easily be mated to a genie!"
She bumped into her dresser and felt frustrated with herself. Everything was set up a certain way so bumps and falls wouldn't happen.
Kara hated being blind. She missed the colors, shapes, the faces of her family.
She began to cry as she sank into her vanity chair. She played with her purple hair and felt her mystic smoke surround her.
A sign of too much emotion. She couldn't help being upset. Upset at her disability, embarrassed that she still ran into things, and scared of who her future husband would be.
Edric
Edric was zoned out, staring out the window. He felt it while slowly sipping his coffee. The ache, the ringing. The confirmation that he wasn't alone.
"She's out there. Someone to love me." He smiled a bit.
"But is it truly love though? Your soulmate could just be a chick who could tolerate you the most." His smile faded.
He glanced at his kitchen calendar and squinted at the year.
"Well, fuck."
He chugged the last of his coffee and stared out his kitchen window some more.
He watched as some members of his pack frolicked around and howled with delight.
Some of them got mated, too.
"But which one of us will be mated to a non-werewolf?"
"...Hmmm...Would it be so bad?"
He reminded himself that he hated braggers and seafood. A vampire and mermaid were at the bottom of his list.
He sighed and poured another cup of coffee.
His fellow wolves howled some more. As he watched and listened, his hand found his scarred throat. He subconsciously massaged it. He longed to howl with joy as well. He missed growling. He missed speaking. He missed singing, though he would never tell anyone that out loud.
He tried desperately to be positive.
He closed his eyes and tried to imagine an array of women. For some reason, he couldn't form any faces or figures in his mind. All he could see was purple smoke.
Ana
"Motherfucker!" Ana screeched and looked up to the blue sky to find comfort.
"Excuuuse me?"
Ana dropped her head back down, whipped off her large sunglasses, and looked at the bartender with dismay.
"I apologize Holly. I've just been mated and I'm not exactly thrilled."
Holly rolled her eyes. "Right, so you wanted the #6?"
Ana flicked open her fan and proceeded to cool herself. She nodded with a frown.
Holly sighed, "I'll add an extra pump. No charge."
Ana nodded a thank you before sitting down. After a few moments, she turned to look at her fellow drinkers.
"Who are you hubby?" She mumbled and began to scan the outdoor bar.
"Are you here?"
*clink*
Ana's double-shot drink was ready. She snatched and slurped, wanting to get her mind off of being tied down.
Marriage, kids...yuck!
She looked out onto the ocean and fantasized a merman mate. They were known to do well with their hips and marked high on flexibility.
She bit her straw when the naughty visuals became clearer.
"Or perhaps a worthy witch?"
Intelligent, curious, and naturally helpful. Maybe she just needed a good guy?
"Whoever or whatever he is, he won't rule me!"
Ana slurped the last bits of her drink and paid Holly. Calm and confidence enveloped her once more.
She adjusted her jewelry and her large sun hat. She then popped open a mirror to make sure she still looked good.
"Yup, I do."
She wiped off some blood left on her lip from her aggressive slurping, stood up, and let the sun joyfully hit her.
Thankful that a modern vampire, like herself, could do so.
Flynn
Flynn was sitting at the edge of his bed, head in his hands.
"I shouldn't worry. Shouldn't worry at all! I'd be free from this shit place."
He stood up and started to pace. He passed by his balcony, touching some of the plants. Only a few would grow or unwilt.
A sad reminder that he had the worst green thumb in the city.
He looked into a mirror. His red hair and freckled tanned skin looked back at him.
His people called him a leper. A distasteful nickname for a leprechaun.
The red hair was a "red flag" amongst the elves. It was a warning that when an elf had red hair, they had the potential to be tyrants. Just like the elves from centuries ago that dabbled in dark magic. It changed their hair, added freckles as "markings", and made them ambitiously evil.
"If she's another creature, will she know elven history? Will she fear me, too?"
Flynn tugged on one of his pointed ears and thought about what his mother would say.
"Treat her right and you'll be alright!" She would smile at him encouragingly and pinch his chin.
It was one of that last lessons she gave him before she died.
He wept as he grew the only thing he could do perfectly. He wished for his mother's comfort and guidance in this new phase of his life.
He looked down at his gorgeous red roses and plucked one off.
"Strange." He whispered.
He pricked his finger, but felt no pain.
A sense of peace took over his whole soul while looking at the bead of blood.
Ivie
Ivie had just slipped a bead through a strand when it hit her.
The long, intricate necklace loosened and all the beads fell to the floor.
"Okay. Alright. Okay." She kneeled down and started to pick up the beads. She kept trying to whisper reassurances to herself.
It didn't help.
She looked around her workroom. Her sketches, materials, shelves of beads.
Would her husband be okay with her career? Many of the fairy men had high standards or traditional views on marriage.
"Can he love a wingless wife who loves work?"
A breeze came through and she smelled smoke.
"A fire?!"
She ran to the window and saw her stepfather grilling. He smiled as he watched his winged triplet daughters flutter around adorably.
Ivie's own wings fluttered with want. Trying to free themselves underneath her robe.
She reached over each shoulder and gave a pinch.
"Enough! You know you can't." She scolded.
Her wings steadied in disappointment.
A knock at the door forced Ivie to change her worried look.
"Come in!" She turned away from the scene with her sisters and continued to pick up the beads. Her mother, Sylvia, entered.
Sylvia sat on a chair and watched Ivie for a bit.
"What happened?" Her mom asked quietly.
"I dropped the beads. The uh-grill fire freaked out my senses."
"Huh. Was that it? I felt something strange a few minutes ago." She waited patiently for Ivie's response.
Ivie still on her knees, looked up at her mother, then touched her heart. Sylvia shifted in her seat.
"Ah. I see...Well, sweetie, that's nice isn't it?" She sank down to the floor and slowly began to pick up the beads as well.
"I've worked so hard. I found my calling. I'm doing something I love."
"Ivie, your soulmate is someone who will be loyal to you. He'll support your ambitions. The oracles are never wrong."
Ivie nodded, "I know."
She held Ivie's hand.
"He may not be the love of your life, but he'll at least be your friend for life. Even if he's not a fairy."
"Not a fairy? Shit! It's a Mythos year."
"Come outside when you can, okay?" Ivie's mother left to give her space and some time.
Ivie put away her materials to work on them tomorrow. And watched her sisters fly around with glee.
Her eyes shifted to the fire burning underneath the grill. She felt an overwhelming heat and slowly took off her robe.
Her backless dress revealed two battered wings. The left was almost completely gone, the right was split in the middle.
They moved in unison with the dancing flames.
Dante
The ringing and ache came quickly.
Dante yelped and fell backward onto the roof's floor. His unbitten apple rolled away from him.
"And on a Mythos year?"
Dante remained sprawled on the floor.
He thought about how he would no longer be alone and it somewhat bothered him.
"I've gotta share, provide, and prosper... And have offspring as well."
He thought about children that looked like him. They'd be running around laughing as he chased them. Two, maybe three.
"Would I be a good father?" He thought.
"Better than yours!" He responded back to himself.
He thought of his father and his strict upbringing. Dante hoped and prayed that he wouldn't repeat his father's ways.
Dante felt guilty that his main joy at the moment was the prospect of kids. He knew he would make a great dad, but most likely a shit husband.
He forced his mind back to his soon to be wife.
What if she wasn't like him? Who could handle him?
"Werewolf? Vampire? Maybe a witch or genie?"
In his opinion, mermaids and elves were a bit too weak. Fairies...were the worse!
"Hopefully, she isn't one. Way too dainty."
Dante played with the fallen apple and gave it a look before setting it on fire.
It felt good to burn. Dante swelled his inner flame. His skin crackling and scaling at the same time. When he was fully transformed, he opened his jaw and smoke puttered out pathetically.
He never could belt out his flame, why bother now?
He groaned with dismay as he shifted back and laid down by choice this time.
Dante, the Defective Dragon, sighed, sizzled out, and stared at the stars.
Marisol
Marisol was delighted. She's about to have a husband! And she didn't care that it was a Mythos year!
"I'd fuck a fairy's wing if it meant happily ever after."
She probably would, too. The horniness made her vulgar, grouchy, and impatient.
Erotic dreams have been plaguing her for months! It was an indication that a merperson would find a mate soon.
She longed for sex and companionship. Her happiness dimmed when she thought of her first love. The passion, the laughter, the eventual heartbreak when he was mated 4 years prior.
They could've been a decent match, but not a perfect match. They knew this and were mature enough to accept their fate.
Marisol was happy for him now.
The marriage's been going well according to his letters. In his last letter, about six months ago, he said they were still learning to be together, but he felt at home.
Their love story was officially over and she wept with joy and sorrow. That same night, a dream came to her.
The mermaid was walking! Walking through some woods, barefoot and wearing a thin dress. She came to a clearing with the perfect patch of grass. Footsteps approached her and she somehow "knew" who it was.
Strong, dark, male hands hugged her from behind. It wasn't her first love.
"You'll be okay. Take your time." He whispered.
Marisol felt hazy. Like a dream within a dream.
"Does he know what I've been through?"
Something told her yes. She felt safe, hopeful, and aroused.
"How much time do we have?" She asked.
He kissed her shoulder. "Enough."
Marisol woke the next morning remembering an amazing, sexual blur.
She did feel okay. She knew she'd find her home soon.
And here it was...finally.
Remy
"Come on..." Remy mumbled to his boner.
Why the hell did he get so horny right after being mated?
He knew he shouldn't be that surprised. He'd been having a lot of sex dreams. Always in the woods, always a woman in white, always great sex that he couldn't remember.
"It's more than just sex!" He sighed.
"Pffft..." His dick twitched back.
Remy wasn't going to deny that he wanted sex, but he was excited about the overall mate experience.
He admired his parent's solid marriage and blossoming family. The teamwork, supporting their kids through everything, the romance they shared.
He and his siblings turned out pretty damn good.
His older sister and younger brother were healers. His oldest brother was a historian. The last two sisters were too young to choose a career, but Remy knew they'd do well in whatever field they eventually chose. His parents were proud of all them.
Remy himself was an inventor in the community. He came up with different methods of using magic.
Hopefully, she wouldn't mind his career as the eccentric scientist/inventor.
He looked down at his amputated leg.
"Hope she doesn't mind that either."
"Dude, you're a bummer." His penis finally calmed down.
Soon after, he felt his wrist warm. He looked at the different bracelets and their unique charms. The wolf charm glowed.
He got up, used his crutch cane, and pressed the glowing charm on the glass.
Edric's anxious-looking face appeared.
"Hey, what's up?" Remy signed.
Edric signed back, "The wolf has a woman."
Remy smiled. He was happy for his friend and relieved he had someone to talk to.
"The witch does, too." Remy responded back.
