Kit yawned and laid his head down on his folded arms. Homeroom wouldn’t start for another ten minutes, and he saw no reason to put in the effort to mingle with all these… humans.
The body Kit currently occupied was a human by the name of Derrik Eagleson. He was a 15 years old, antisocial, average male. Everything about him was average. Average height, average weight, brown hair, brown eyes, skin tone neither light nor dark, average build, and part of an average-income family.
Kit hated it.
Kit could remember his past life where he was both a dragon beastkin and an emperor. He could remember his wedding day, his wedding night, and a very not average life. Something had happened, though, and now Kit was stuck in this world where magic didn’t work. Instead of magic there was science. There might have been a few perks to having science, but Kit desperately missed his ability to fly, how he could throw down wards, and - most importantly - seeing his sweetheart every day.
Three days after realizing he wasn’t in his own world, Kit had determined that a powerless human was worthless in this world. For the first time in years he dedicated himself to researching the world around him. He’d lost the ability to ‘sense’ a lie, which had been a bit of a hurdle. This world was full of lies. Humans called it ‘fiction’. It was only after he’d attended one of the literature classes that he realized all these humans were lying to each other for fun. It was some bizarre form of entertainment.
The rest of his classmates trickled in, the last two scurrying to their seats just before the bell chimed. The teacher came in and did a quick roll before the morning announcements came over the loudspeaker, and Kit yawned through both while half-heartedly listening.
He’d move mountains if it would bring Josh back. Well, Kit would prefer it if he went back to Josh but bringing Josh here would be second best. His little kitten wouldn’t have to worry about knights here (no matter how many years passed, Kit could not convince Josh that knights were safe), but the lack of magic would be stifling for both of them. Plus they would be underage. Kit might not care about breaking any laws of this strange new world, but that didn’t mean he wanted everyone’s eyes on them and talking smack about Josh behind his back.
If they tried, Kit would make sure they didn’t dare do it twice.
“Everyone, I’d like to introduce a new student to you now,” the teacher said as she motioned for someone to come in from the hallway. “This is Jed Thompson. He’s a transfer student from XX High. Please give him a warm welcome and help him find his way around.”
Kit reached down for his backpack and shifted it forward a bit, then stood and shouldered the bag when the bell for first period rang. What was the point of getting to know the new kid? They weren’t Josh, and they couldn’t help Kit get back to his world. They were just another useless human.
