  • Tapas Creator Incubator Program

    May 15, 2018

With a family of over 30,000 comic and novel creators, Tapas has always been a celebration of people like yourself: unique, talented, and highly motivated independent creators.

Back in August 2017, we announced our first-ever Tapas Creator Incubator program. We received such an overwhelming response that we’ve decided to open for another round of submissions. We also listened to the feedback given by our amazing community of creators and have made adjustments to the program to better serve the growing webcomics community.

What is the Tapas Creator Incubator Program?

The program is an opportunity for creators who have amazing ideas and want to work with us--and receive funding--to develop and bring them to life. Being selected for this program means entering a co-production agreement with us and working closely with our editorial team to create new and exciting original stories. During the program, creators will be compensated for their work. Not only are we providing creators with full editorial resources, we will also work closely with you to develop your project for opportunities like print publishing or TV/online series deals, if you so desire.

We worked with the first class of creators to produce these amazing series: Born Sexy Tomorrow, Magical Boy, Drop Devil, Torte & Lacey, Happiness Theory, The Demon Babysitter, and Three Lifetimes.

We’re Looking for Comic Creators Who…

- Have a passion and drive to create exciting and original stories

- Are excited to partner with us

- Are able to create comics in a vertical scroll format

What We’re Looking For…

Original Stories

If you have a great, original comic idea that you’ve been dying to draw but have been unable to find the resources to make a reality, we want to help you!

Mobile-Optimized Vertical Format

Your project must fit our preferred format: full-color, mobile-friendly (also known as “vertical scroll” or “infinite canvas”), and be long-form narratives. A single season will consist of 20-25 episodes, with each episode being roughly 30 panels.

Time Frame

Most projects will start in July and take approximately 6 - 9 months to complete one season of an original story. While we will try to work out a schedule that is most comfortable for you, the ideal start date for projects will be in July or August.

Compensation

Creators will be paid monthly during the production period. The amount will vary between individual contracts (which will depend on various factors). The monthly payment works as an advance, or minimum guarantee, toward future revenue share from the project. This means that when it comes to potential earnings from the project, the sky’s the limit. This is NOT a work-for-hire deal.

Please be advised that your submission does not guarantee a response from us. Due to the volume of emails we receive, our responses might be delayed, and we are unable to provide individual feedback on every submission.

However, we will do our best to review your submission and get back to you as soon as possible.

Our vision has always been to help webcomic creators tell their stories, and we started the Tapas Creator Incubator as one way of doing that. We understand that this program might not be a good fit for everyone, and we’re continually making adjustments to allow more creators to benefit from this program. We hope that you’re just as excited as we are for the Tapas Creator Incubator and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Always,

Chang Kim & the Tapas Staff
