When I reach my table I sit down in my seat, next to Simon. I'm a bit nervous, but luckily I can keep my cool very well.
"So, Ken," I begin, "is there anywhere else that I haven't been in the school yet?" Ken plays with his scarf, thinking. He nods and says,
"Yeah, I haven't shown you the track, fields and locker rooms. The gym is a separate building and isn't attached to the school besides a walkway. The locker rooms are attached to the gym." I put my stuff in my bag in order. Simon and Ken get their bags ready and we all stand up and leave the cafeteria. We exit the school from a side door. We follow the path, leading to the back field. The school is next to the forest and you can barely see it through the fog. The muddy field that surrounds the paved path has a layer of fog. Mud has never grossed me out or anything like that, but this time, it reminds me of quicksand. It gives the feeling of a bottomless muddy grass field.
We continue along the path and a building, bigger than my house, but smaller than the school comes into view. There is a track across from the gym. The fields near the tracks also have some soccer goals. When we reach the gym's doors, Simon tries to turn the door handles.
"Locked as usual," he says, "I'll go through the back window and open the door from the inside." Simon walks to the side of the building and leaves our sight. It's odd though, there wasn't a squishing sound of the mud as left. Just a whoosh of the wind. I peek around the building corner to check if Simon is there still, walking, but he isn't there. There aren't even footprints in the mud.
"Uh. . . he's just light footed," says Ken from behind me. I won't turn around to look at him. I stay silent. I feel somewhat annoyed at Ken and Simon.
"Well-" begins Ken, but I walk to the door, away from him. I don't want to hear it. I turn to the door and in the corner of my eye, Ken looks nervous. I squint my eyes to see better in the dark gym, through the small window in the door. Simons face pops up in the window, his pupils vertical lines.
"AGH!" I yell. I try to step back, but the wet ground makes me fall backwards. I scrap my palms on the wet cement ground. Simon leaves the gym door open as he rushes over to me to see if I'm ok. Ken helps me stand up. My palms throb. I look at them and I see that my palms are bleeding. I wince at the small sharp pains.
"Oh. . . Kaitlyn. We should clean up your hands," says Ken. He notices that I got his hands messy. There is another whoosh of the wind. I look up and Simon, who was just beside me is now holding the gym door open with one hand. The other hand is hold his shirt over his nose and mouth. He doesn't look so good and his eyes stay on my bloody palms.
"Uh. . ." says Ken. He looks back at me and says,
"He really doesn't like blood."
Ken and I go inside the gym and we go to the boys locker room bathrooms. He know where the medical supplies are there and he wraps up my injuries. Simon is waiting outside the locker room during this. When Ken steps outside the locker room to talk with Simon, I decide to listen in.
Simon sighs. Ken stops walking.
"Simon, you have to be more careful," says Ken.
"I know, I know. It's hard, ok? But you were doing some risky stuff too."
"Well, It's hard for me to hold back since it's like a sixth sense."
There is a moment of silence.
"Man, why are we even doing this? What's the benefit from all this? Won't it just be worse when she finds out?"
Ken hesitates,
"Well, Simon, first off, she might be mad about earlier. She is also an outsider, it's hard for them to understand. Um. . . we also should secure a friendship with her, ok? We need her. . ."
I hear Simon scoff,
"I understand your point, but it's a horrible point. We won't get anything out of keeping secrets."
Ken groans,
"Fine, I suppose, but let's just wait for the right time to tell her."
I think it's time to move back to where I was before, or else I will be caught listening in on their conversation. I quickly tip toe over to the bench. I do an awkward twirl to try and sit down, but I slip backwards again. Simon and Ken see me fall on my butt again.
"Whoops. . ." I say. I am more embarrassed that I was before. Simon walks over and helps me up, he smiles to make me feel better. I know for sure that he is chuckling on the inside. It's so clear on his face.
"Want me to hold your hand?" he asks. I growl and punch his arm. We both react in some pain. I hold my palm and he holds his arm. He chuckles. Ken walks to my other side while saying,
"Alright, alright you two! Stop fooling around," he winks at us both,
"Let's give Kaitlyn the full gym tour." Ken links our elbows together and Simon links his right elbow with my left one. I forget about my suspecting thoughts and my reasons to be upset. The feelings that were eating away at me are gone, poof. I think I found new friends.
You ever have a song stuck in your head that would go great with how you are feeling? It's like in a tv show, the background music goes along with the event, but now it's in my life. I listen to classical music-that's the type of music that's playing. It's lovely, heart warming, now it's sad, horrible, makes me want to cry. So much pain and heart break- like the fate that the two lovers meet-death. My heart starts racing as we walk around the gym. I don't know what's wrong with me. I look around the gym. . . slowly. I look out the top windows and see the forest outside. I think. . . I think the forest is trying to say something.
We stop walking and Simon catches me before I trip. Ken and Simon are talking to me with concerned expressions on their faces. I can't hear them. But, that is the least of my worries. I back away from my two new friends and walk towards the back exit of the gym. I open the door and ahead of me is the forest, covered by a light sheet of fog. Simon appears to my left side. I think he is yelling at me. I step off the paved path and my foot sinks into the muddy field. I try to move forward through the muddy field. My shoes come off- then my socks too. My jeans are muddy and I am treading through the soft field. I don't want to stop, I want to go to the forest. My legs are moving forward for me, like mechanic legs.
When I reach the edge of the forest, I stand in the mud looking into the forest. The music in my head is calm, understanding. I scan the forest, but I can't see anything through the fog. As soon as I think about the fog, it clears and the forest is visible. In the forest, a white figure appears. The legs are faded and the face is not clear. My legs become locked in place. I cannot move. But, it's just not my legs- I can't move anything else. My eyes are glued it it's face. It slowly approaches me and two yellow eyes with vertical lines for pupils are now more perceptible.
I can feel the uneasy feeling rising inside of me. My eyes pick up something I have never seen before in my life. The aura, the terrifying feeling resonating from the being was now visible. It was purple, gray, black- the opposite of it's looks. My heart accelerates. My eyes become blurry from tears of fear and I blink to make my vision somewhat more better. The aura expands, surrounds me, encloses me. It's dark besides the bright creature of death. I can hear myself breathing and I realize that it can hear and see my fear. I see the look of amusement in its eyes. It grins with a big smile and says to me,
"Kaitlyn. . ."
The creature's legs are no longer faded and are now bright as the rest of the body. I hear yelling,
"Kaitlyn! Hey hold on in there! Simon's coming!"
Ken's yelling is coming from my left, but I can't see him. I open my mouth to speak,
"Ken," I say, but I couldn't finish my sentence. Suddenly, the right side of the dark purple barrier cracks, light pours in.
SMASH
A hole in the darkness is created and there is Simon. The whites of his eyes are red, the veins in his eyes are now green and his pupils are vertical lines. He opens his mouth and there are two fangs. His fingers are jagged and pointed, veins pulsing and visible on his skin, and his fingernails long and sharp.
Simon jumps in the air and disappears. I look at the being and Simon appears above it and falls down on it. The creature shrieks and Simon bites into it with his fangs. The aura barrier dissolves and I am released from enclosure. I look around and see Ken. Simon is standing in front of me, looking away. I study him in amazement. Simon looks at me, expecting me to be horrified.
I lean forward to approach him, but my legs don't respond. I gasp and Simon shoots over to me with incredible speed. He catches me before I fall in the mud. Ken rushes over and says,
"Kaitlyn, are you ok?"
"I'm. . ." I hesitate to respond normally, but I notice that no feeling comes from my legs.
"I- I can't feel my legs," I say.
"Guys- I can't feel my legs!" I scream. I panic and look at Ken and Simon. Simon lifts me into a baby cradle-style carry. Ken reassures me,
"Hey, honey, it'll be ok. Stay calm." He puts his hand on my forehead. He looks at Simon and nods. A warm heat rises in his fingertips and I feel exhausted and tired. I drift into a sleep as Simon carries me quickly to the school.
