"Are you sure you want to do the song you wrote? I mean it's not bad it's just...uhm...oh a-and I haven't even learned it!" Ethan said with the kind of nervousness you get in your voice when you're trying to speak in front of a room full of people or when you're talking to someone you're intimidated by. "We HAVE to do it, Ethan, if we don't everyone's gonna think we're plagiarizing!" Kennedy said as if she was confident enough to take on 1,000 lions with just a stick. Now, Ethan and Kennedy were about to try out for the talent show. Kennedy has done this multiple times before, and Ethan has always said he was gonna do it but always chickened out. Kennedy made her best friend face his fears because, well, she wrote a song for two people and he was the only one who actually had some sort of motivation to do it.
"Come on, Kennedy! Can't we do Holding Onto You or Feel Good Inc.? I actually know those songs by heart! We can do the song you wrote for the actual talent show if we make it," Ethan said, trying to sound persuading but just came off as awkward. "FINE, what the hell Ethan, we'll do Holding Onto You," Kennedy replied.
The auditions were being held in a small classroom full of other kids from the middle school. It was a bit crowded, except in the middle of the room where the judges and the performers were. When it was their turn to come up Ethan had to squeeze through every other kid in there. Ethan was kind of a chubbier kid, not fat, but not skinny either, and he wasn't very tall, about 5'1" at this time. He wore thick, dirty glasses with chew marks on the ends because, well, what else is he supposed to chew on when he's nervous? He had light tan skin and an afro. He had a face where you could always tell what his mood was, albeit through his eyes or through the way his mouth moved, you could tell. Kennedy, on the other hand, was a semi-skinny girl with short hair and kind eyes. She always wore a Captain America hoodie and long skirts. She could squeeze through the crowd of kids easily.
"So what will you two be doing today" said one of the judges when they got up there. "We'll be doing Holding Onto You by Twenty One Pilots" Kennedy said confidently. Ethan's hands became increasingly shaky as the words of the first rap uttered out of his mouth. "I'm taking over my body" then the rest felt like a breeze. The beat in his heart and the rush of thoughts in his brain about a future he was uncertain of, it was incredible. Then the verse was over. Kennedy stated singing the chorus. The judges said their time was up and they left. Ethan finally knew what he was gonna do in life. He knew he was gonna try and change the world through music. What he didn't know what that he had to write his own songs to do that.
