I fell in love with her the only way I knew how.
By accident.
I wasn’t supposed to.
(Or that’s what I was led to believe.)
But here we are. Golden, bruised, and petty little fools.
I could hear her singing. Not that it was particularly loud, but that the wind carried it around the rooftop.
“What if we ruin it all? And we love like fools…” she sounds incredibly sad.
“That’s the way life is.” Someone continued it. I knew that voice, too well actually. He sounded amused, more than anything. He stepped beside her and I watched as he flicked her forehead. It looked to be gentle, since she didn’t flinch at all. She just smiled. But it was a sad smile. I couldn’t see his face, since my best friend always had that habit of not-quite-looking at somebody’s face, but I can assume he was smiling too.
For some reason, it made my chest clench.
“Do we take that risk?” She sang to nothing at all and the wind carried it away again, up to the sky.
