“I’m not going inside guys, sorry but no”
Today has been hectic…honestly, everyone seems to be lacking a spine today… it had been such a nice sunny day too in the city. Then we got a call at night saying there had been an attack in the churchyard, we mobilize and what did we end up finding? Sexton Jonathan with a huge cut on the chest, still the man was alive, and the medics seemed positive he would make it out.
Then the guys ended up finding the gravedigger with his blood on his coat and same as with his shovel. Honestly the guy was scary in his own right. The sexton Jonathan was a strong man, looking tall yet thin with his good six feet looked like the type of guy you would avoid in a brawl. But the gravedigger was scary in his own right, he was a full foot shorter than Jonathan, but he looked strong…
Well, it was to be expected of someone whose whole life was around the churchyard, he had heard it wasn’t weird for gravediggers to be strong, even less weird for them to be able to crack a neck with their hands…maybe the last one was more of a rumor, but he could see why there would be rumors of that type about them.
“I’m not going inside there either chief, sorry but that…is quite scary you know?”
Another coward, seems everyone in the office is scared, Jones and Smith went to interview the gravedigger, Adams was in the hospital waiting for news about the sexton, his last report was that the sexton was in stable condition… and that left the last witness on the area. The Eye.
Regulations through history have made it clear. A graveyard or churchyard both need a gravedigger to work in them, and one Eye to make sure things stay in the clear… he often heard a phrase about them.
An eye could have many gravediggers, but a gravedigger could only have on eye.
The Eye for a lack of a better term… was someone deemed as a prodigy in keeping a look out of the whole area where a gravedigger worked, and they would make reports about the job to their superiors. Every small detail was kept without the need of a written record. All was kept in their memory, the only place no one could access.
“I will go then, bunch of cowards, you should feel ashamed…”
My voice is full of courage, and I hope none of them notice that I am intimated by her.
“Best of luck chief”
“Thanks, now, Morris and you go see if there is anything else out there to do, I will do this”
They nod before going their own way, clearly feeling more relaxed. As I open the door to the interrogation room I can’t avoid but think that maybe it was a bad idea…
I’m greeted by the sight of a girl that has gotten her hood down. Her hair of the same color as the falling leaves on autumn, and giving the same air of the end of life in those. The girl carries the aura of death around her, maybe a result of spending so much time in the company of a gravedigger or the graveyard itself… still, her clear eyes behind glasses show no emotion…
“Hello Eye, I hope you know why you are here…”
As I leave the file of the information we got so far of the situation in front as I seat, I can’t avoid but feeling like the girl in front of me knows everything that is happening around her… it is scary, as if there was no place to hide from her sight.
“Greetings Chief Foster… no need to be so formal, you can just call me little girl as the other offices did before…”
Her eyes show no emotion, and her voice is even, it feels like speaking with a machine, and I don’t even have the need to be surprised at how she found out my name, we were told in the past to avoid asking them unnecessary questions at people like them.
“Will do, but I prefer formalities… so why not start with something simple, why did you called us tonight?”
The girl sighs, and she starts to look at the folder, I didn’t notice when she took it.
“The time is wrong, sexton Jonathan was hurt at ten with two minutes and twenty-three seconds judging by the level of his injury, Colt found him at ten with three minutes and forty seconds, twenty seconds later he told me to call you, you reached the graveyard with the ambulance at ten within almost fourteen minutes after my call, and at ten twenty-three you took gravedigger Paterson into custody, the ambulance took sexton Jonathan three minutes before that…”
Cold calculations, and yet I find myself in need to ask.
“How do you know the exact time of the injury of the sexton?”
She smiles as she plays with her clear nails, the whole girl carries such indifference and devoid of feelings that I can feel that to her all of this is game.
“The question is, why should I tell you?”
She laughs before seeming to look behind me.
“I hope you give back his shovel to Paterson, is all he owns after all…”
For a moment, she sounded genuinely sad as her eyes showed a glint of something, but as fast as they changed, her eyes go back to the same clear look. I decided to answer her, maybe she will see it to cooperate.
“We will give it back to him once the guys on the lab finish taking samples of the blood on the shovel”
She interrupts my speech before I can say anything else
“You won’t find any traces of the sexton blood in his shovel, the blood belongs to the man who stole a corpse from our churchyard, with full authorization Paterson did what he is supposed to do if someone tries to steal a corpse”
My curiosity is piqued at this… I need to know, few things are well known about the gravediggers, and what better source than an Eye.
“What is he supposed to do to thief’s in such cases?”
She smiles
“Stop them through any means necessary of course, we can’t leave graves open, a body must always go back their place… after all, we can’t let people go around stealing corpses… you should know what happens already when corpses disappear officer.”
Sadly, he knew, he well knew what happened when corpses started to disappear… and it was never a good thing…
Gravediggers did an important job… one that people often forgot how important it was.
“But worry not Chief, we will find the corpse, and hopefully the man who hurt the sexton”
Her smile is bright, but her whole body shows no emotion, in a weird way, all of this feels like speaking with…
“A corpse, right? I been told that a lot Chief, so don’t worry, I take no offense of it… but I would prefer if your men kept their thoughts in order, I’m no that scary when people get to know me, I got to make a report, and I will need you to unhand Paterson”
I get out of my surprise before speaking up
“Why should we let him go? He is a suspect lady”
She laughs at me, like she can see how I feel of all this situation…
“Worry not Chief, Paterson wouldn’t dare hurt sexton Jonathan, but oh he will hurt whoever stole the corpse and hurt him…”
Her smile grows dark as she ends up speaking, now I understand why people fear them…
“Oh, stop being such a crybaby Chief, what would your men think if they saw you sweating so much in fear? Now I must hurry, Paterson surely is having trouble explaining himself with the officer”
She waves and leaves. Just like that, she took the file too…
I finally understand the reason no one wants to deal with this kind of issues… only God knows why people like her exist.
