I hate when hair dressers do that, it took me a year to find someone who would cut my hair as short as I wanted it, albeit forced into it after "messing up my hair" by shaving the back of my neck with an electric razor. I love my short hair. Also, short hair looking weird has nothing to do with your height, only your facial structure (long vs round)
