Standing around in the shop when there weren’t customers did get a little tedious. Evelyn spent that time cleaning while trying to think of ways she could get her current ships together.
While she was in the midst of fay dreaming, John moved over toward the front window. “Evelyn, come look,” his voice immediately pulled her from her reverie.
She grabbed the popcorn container and rushed to the window. Hopefully this was something fun and interesting.
And sure enough, John hadn’t called her over for anything mundane. A brown haired woman in a plain green dress and a brown haired man in the traditional cotton shirt and pants handed a lily from her shop to the woman. He hadn’t told her about who his purchase was for!
She handed a pair of the red and blue 3D glasses to John before putting on her own pair. It was important to enhance your vision when cuteness was on display.
The girl smiled up at her morning customer in a way that made Evelyn feel like she’d just had a piece of chocolate. Evelyn wished she’d been paying more attention to her other customers. She would have to look up that man’s name and ask him more questions about his darling significant other when he came back next time.
The woman blushed at something he said and looped her free arm though his. They walked away with the woman leaning just ever so slightly against the man. It warmed Evelyn like drinking hot chocolate in the winter to see ships happily sailing along in calm seas.
John took some popcorn from the bucket and munched on it. Evelyn wondered if enjoyed the people watching or the popcorn more.
“By the way, what is the purpose of the weird blue and red glasses?” John asked while pulling off the glasses and looking at them.
Evelyn stared at him speechlessly for a moment. She hadn’t thought about how strange these glasses must seem to a person from this world. The reason commenters and onlookers were shown wearing them, and the reason she felt it necessary to wear them was not a reason one could easily divulge to a person from this world. “Eye protection. It helps filter out the glowing rays coming off couples who are getting together,” she finally came up with an answer that seemed like it might be reasonable in this world.
Her mind continued to think about the on the spot explanation she’d just made up. It made it sound like she had some sort of magic vision. She hadn’t heard of magic in this world, but unicorns and dragons existed. If magic didn’t exist, she could always just claim she meant it metaphorically which was what she meant when she originally said it.
But John didn’t question her. He just raised an eyebrow and then shrugged. “Should I just hold onto the glasses since you keep handing them to me?” he asked.
On the one hand Evelyn was a little afraid to let her precious 3D glasses be in the possession of another person. On the other hand she had 3 pairs, and John was her employee. He was around her most of the day, and she could get to him to give him the glasses so they would look like proper spectators of sailing ships.
But if he had his own pair, he wouldn’t need her around for a pair.
He took another handful of popcorn. He would still need to call her over for the popcorn he seemed to enjoy so much. “Yeah, you can keep the glasses, but make sure to keep them on you at all times. If you want popcorn when we are watching a ship, you are required to wear the glasses.”
His eyebrows narrowed and he looked just a little puzzled. “Why are the glasses required for that popcorn stuff?”
“Because it’s always better for two people to be watching than just one,” Evelyn responded with a very defined intonation that said there was no room for questions, and with a large grin on her face she went back to the counter. It was almost time for her lettuce lunch.
