A black SUV stops in front of a building in a hurry. The squeaking sound of the
tires can be heard when it hits the brake hard. It doesn’t take long for the
door to open. A man helps open it from the outside, and slowly the person with
a big figure steps out from it. Carefully not to move his right arm too much.
“Ouch…”
“Are you fine by yourself, sir? You shouldn’t go to the office this early, sir..”
The front guard who opened the door earlier immediately approach his superior. Lending him a hand after the black SUV takes off.
“Thank you, but it’s no big deal. I just haven’t got used to it.” Said Kruger while grimacing. Gently squeezing his subordinate’s shoulder with his left hand, “Get back to your duty, boy!”
“Ye-Yessir!”
With the man gone to where he was before, Kruger takes a step forward.
Walking past a giant silver door frame into the building. He exhales faintly. He didn’t expect to get back in this building this early in the morning. One of the landmarks inside the colony.
The South’s District Command Center.
It’s a facility located near the inner side’s wall, next to The South District’s city park. Standing magnificently before the gate of the inner wall, acting like a fine borderline between The Capital and the suburbs area surrounding it.
The wall on the lower floor is made from glass surrounding the entire building. Several thick pillars in silver are tucked between the glass walls. Inside, the marble floor alongside white walls separating the rooms, and grey furniture scattered around. Adding more hustle to the people going back and forth.
As the name implies, The Command Center acts as the base of operation for Local Enforcer which can be found in all four districts. It manages all sorts of concerns inside its jurisdiction. Mainly matters related to security and social affairs. Each task force furthermore is divided based on three bureaus. Social Welfare Bureau, Investigation Bureau, and Public Safety Bureau are the parts of Local Enforcer in every district.
With the number of things to take care is piling up every day, there’s no doubt this is one of the busiest workplaces in the colony.
Despite the rush hour in the morning, it still doesn’t stop Kruger from going against the waves of people walking in different ways inside. His eyes fixed high above, looking for a particular sign hanging from the ceiling. Ignoring how much his broken arm has swayed.
There are some signs with arrows scattered in the vicinity since it’s a big place that accommodates three different bureaus. With its vast and complex layout, it won’t take long for someone to get lost or caught up with the wave of crowds.
In the middle of the hectic flow of people, Kruger takes a turn at a long hallway bursting with workers going back and forth. From the looks of it, this is the busiest sector of them all at the moment, at least.
The investigation Bureau, with several divisions under it.
Kruger enters a room at the end of the hallway in a hurry before getting swept left and right with the flow of the crowd, even though he tried not to move his arm too much in the meantime. The door was wide open. So he just waltzed in without a second thought while checking the surrounding.
After seeing someone inside, Kruger directly heads to a woman sitting in her cubicle, with both her eyes glued to the laptop in front, and puts all of her to it.
“Quite early, aren’t you?” He greeted.
“Ah… Good morning, Lieutenant Kruger.” A woman with a black ponytail and glasses turned her body immediately, “I’m sorry I didn’t notice you. How long have you been here, sir?”
“I just got here, nothing to worry about.” Kruger takes a good look at the room, “By chance, are you here all by yourself, Yohana? I haven’t seen anyone going in and out of this room on my way here...”
“Well… The room speaks for itself, sir. You know how bothersome to have a handful of juniors in the First Division.” Yohana slumps heavily against the desk. Becomes gloomy after saying it.
“Don’t be so dejected. I appreciate your earnest completion of cases throughout the years with us.”
“Come on, it’s only been two years, sir! It’s nothing to be proud of. I’ll be more than just flattered if you keep bringing it up.”
“Well… I just don’t know how to express my gratitude properly to my subordinate. What other thing can I say, expect my respect for the Heads of First Division?”
"Yet the most laid back compared with other divisions." Yohana chuckles lightly, and covers her slightly reddened face, “You sure are a man of charm, sir. If only not because of your grey hair, every woman in this division, no, even all four divisions would definitely fall head over heels for you, don’t you think, sir?”
“Stop it. Bringing up something that I can’t change… is out of the question, Yohana.” Said Kruger a little irritated upon hearing it. “And also, I’m not that old. I’m still in my twenties, keep that in mind next time.”
“Yeah, yeah… Twenty-nine to thirty years old, right, sir?”
“It’s twenty-six, okay…”
Their little argument ended quickly, with a little smile carved on Yohana’s face as her response before she turns her attention back to the screen in front. The same thing goes for Kruger.
Amidst the silence between them, he shifts his gaze to the desk. Taking a glance at it. If anyone in the division is asked to describe what kind of a person their leader is, there’s only a word to explain it.
She’s a mess.
Stacks of files scattered. Unorganized equipment on the desk. Uncountable numbers of tangled cables. Food crumbs were all over the surface, along with some crumbled paper.
It’s a sight that’s enough to give Kruger a nightmare.
“Anyway, what sort of business do you have this early, sir?”
“I just want to take a look and collect some information about the recent investigations.” He replied with his hand hovering above the messy file on her desk.
“Ah… it’s somewhere around here, sir.”
In the middle of a chaotic state, Yohana frantically browsed through stacks of documents on her desk. But it ends up being more jumbled than before. Kruger watches silently as his subordinate helplessly disarranges the messy workplace further.
“You should clean it up. It’s going to be a pain if an emergency state happens suddenly.”
“I know, right… I’m so sorry for the inconvenience, sir. I’ll search it more thoroughly.” Yohana stands from her seat and peers through the desk.
“There’s no need for it.” Shortly, a document was lifted from the desk. Kruger took a quick look at it. “Is this what you’re looking for?”
“Ah… looks like it. All the reports regarding recent cases are inside the folder. From The Heist of Amethyst Tower the night before yesterday, to what happened last-”
“It’s not complete.”
“Yeah, I know…” Yohana shrugs in the middle of typing, “That’s why I’m stuck and not finished doing all the paperwork here. But at least I’ve already put the main information for the reports there.”
“Do I have to repeat myself?”
“No? I heard what you said right, sir?”
“Yes, but looks like you still don’t get it.” Kruger shook his head, “Where’s the report regarding yesterday morning?”
“Morning, huh…”
Kruger glares at her. Yohana turns her attention to him, tilting her head. For a moment, her mind is wandering somewhere, deep into the series of incidents so far.
After a short silence, her mind was snapped back to reality.
“I think… I forgot to do it, sir…”
