Having picked up the 'forbidden spells', Leila felt a bit more dangerous. She was in a hurry and couldn't sit around reading tons and tons of books. She decided to learn more practical elements and try them. When she was in school, only learning the theory wasn't of much help to her. She knew that she had to try it in order to learn it well. That being said, she flipped the pages hoping to find an interesting spell. She was able to glance at an invisibility spell before she heard the office door opening. In a hurry, she slammed closed the book and took the closest book in reach.
"I saw that," Kieran told her from the doorway.
"Saw what?" she innocently asked.
"The forbidden spells book is the last book you'll read!" He was angry as he knew of the dangers of her powers and these forbidden spells.
"I was just curious..."
"Because of your curiosity, you made Lucie worried. By looking at his eyes, you probably gave a fright to the prince and now what? Are you trying to turn Hell upside down before leaving?" He spoke a bit roughly and harshly as his emotions took control of him.
"I.." Leila understood her wrongdoings but was unable to answer, his words had scared her a bit.
"I understand you, but you need to understand us too," he said sitting next to her on the sofa. He spent a small moment in his office thinking about Leila and he attempted to interpret her words and acts.
"I'm sorry. I understand. I don't know what's happening to me. I'm usually not a risk-taker. I used to stay home all day comfortably and I guess coming somewhere new, somewhere fun made me adventurous." Leila's honesty flew out in the room. She realized the problem and the situation.
"Is the earth that boring?" he asked to lift the tense air around them.
"No, I'm the boring one. If you are with the right people, you can have great fun there."
"You weren't with the right people then?"
"I wasn't with people. I don't really have friends or anything over there. I was scared to go out alone and it wouldn't be much fun either." Kieran started to understand her point of view more. He envisioned her life on earth, he saw a young girl sitting alone melancholically looking at the window. He saw her eat her meals alone on a dining table with empty chairs. He saw a young girl laying in a dark and cold room, gripping her blanket.
"I came out to tell you to try out tarot," he finally said.
"Tarot?" she sprung up.
"Every day, you should make it a habit to do a tarot spread. It's great practice and isn't dangerous."
"You think I'm ready for it?"
"It's worth a try."
Leila took the card deck laying on the table and pushed away the clutter of books and 'fine bugs' cans to make space. She had a flat and empty surface to lay the cards on.
"What am I supposed to do?" she asked wanting to start as soon as possible. "I learned a bit about the cards but I don't know how to do a spread."
"Shuffle the cards while you ask a question in your mind."
"Alright." Leila closed her eyes to focus on her mind. She slowly shuffled the cards. 'What is on my way?' she asked the tarot. "Do I need to focus on my dark energy for that?"
"No, no. This is something anyone can do with intuition." With his reassuring words, she kept on mixing the card with the same question in mind. Once she thought it was enough, she placed the deck on the table.
"Is there a particular way to pick the cards?"
"Once again, it's up to you. They could fall out as you shuffle, you could spread them out and pick or even pick them from the top." Leila had decided to simply take them from the top. "Take three cards, it's a beginner spread." She took out the first card, placed it on the table and read the name out loud.
"The chariot," she took out the second card, "The moon," and the third card, "the sun." Leila looked at Kieran, puzzled.
He sighed, "Trust your intuition and look for their meaning in the book."
Leila tried to feel something from these cards but nothing. She looked at the images. The first one was a person sitting on a blue canopy which was being driven by two sphinxes, one black, one white. On the canopy were many white stars and behind it, kingdoms could be seen far away.
The second card showed a dog and a wolf, they were howling at the moon. Behind them was a pond, and a crayfish came out of it.
The third card showed an infant riding a white horse under the large sun. Behind them were multiple sunflowers. This time, it was Leila that let out a sigh. She took out the book and immediately looked at the meanings as her intuitions didn't help much. But then, a hand stopped her from opening the book.
"Tell me one thing you feel for each card, then you can read the book." Leila gave him a perplexed look but nodded at his request.
"For the first one, power."
"Good," he nodded.
"For the second card, I wasn't sure until I saw the third one. The sun card looks bright and joyous so the moon card must be darker and negative."
"Now you can read the book," he said taking his hand off the book. Kieran wanted to show her that there were no wrong or right answers in tarot, intuition was more important. She flipped to the page where the meanings of the cards had been written. With her finger, she traced the page in search of her cards.
"Number 7, the Chariot, means Control, willpower, success, action and determination. Alright." She continued to trace the page for the remaining cards. "Number 18, the moon. Illusion, fear, anxiety, subconscious and intuition. And the last one which is right next to it. Number 19, the sun, positivity, fun, warmth, success and vitality."
"Understand it now?"
"Not quite but I guess the sun is the guide that will ease the fears that I have from the moon. It's true that I'm scared, I am in Hell and need to become a witch or else I'll die."
"If that's how you see it then that must be it," Kieran had told her.
"For the first one, the thing that struck out to me the most was willpower, that's what I need."
"You have willpower, you can do this," he exclaimed. Leila was touched by his sudden encouragement. He was much softer on her this time. He spoke gently and trusted her. "Remember to do a tarot spread every day," he continued with a warm smile, one he hadn't given to her before.
After having that small tarot reading, Leila continued to study the other books. Kieran sat next to her the whole time to answer all her questions related to witchcraft. They did not fight or argue once in this session. It was a rather strange but nice sight. Their personalities often clashed and made it hard for them to get along. Now that they shared their honesty with each other, they slowly began to understand each other. They are learning to compromise and accept their differences. However, after a while, Leila once again drifted from their objective, of studying.
"Why is there no time in Hell?"
He frowned at the question, "Because Hell is not a rotating planet. Hell doesn't orbit."
"It's strange, all of it is strange. You know a long time ago, people also thought that the earth was a flat surface and the center of the solar system but they were completely wrong. Maybe it's the same thing here. Maybe the science is less developed here."
"We aren't stupid like you humans, our science is much more developed," said Kieran trying to hold down his anger to not ruin their peaceful moment. "Please just keep reading."
"I think I've read enough. Can't we practice now? If we keep going like this, I don't think I'll learn anything." He sighed loudly. Kieran was about to explain to her why she should learn more theory first but he was interrupted by yet another person knocking at the door.
"I wonder who that might be?" Leila asked carefreely.
"I wonder?" he repeated teasing her. "Anyone at that door might mean you're in danger and you're asking as if you're waiting for dinner party guests?" He pushed Leila into his office and went for the door. Before opening it he asked, "Who is it?"
"I am an envoy directly sent by Prince Frey. You are obligated to open the door."
Kieran's eyes widened and Leila peeked out of the office with equally large eyes.
