Before you begin this journey, there are a couple important things I'd like to say. First, thank you for taking the time to read this story. I wrote it a few years back, but it has always been one of my favorite stories. Second, please take a look at the list below, it contains relevant information to help you understand the story.
1. Wolves or people (Drew, Kai, etc.) are wolves in the entire sense of the word. They are not part human or anything, they are animals. But in this world, wolves are an intelligent species who evolved enough to manipulate their forms depending on their region. SO there are no furry animals with only animal instincts. Those animals ARE the Wolf Community. Werewolves do exist in this story but are not the same thing as the Wolf Community.
2. The society that takes place in this story should not be viewed in a 'human' lense. As in, our morals and values do not apply here.
3. There is a set power dynamic in the relationships. The point of this story is not to rise against this dynamic but to exist within it. That being said, this is a fictional story, if you find yourself in situations similar to the ones in this story, please seek help: 800.799.SAFE (7233) or https://www.thehotline.org
4. A lot of research on wolves was done during the drafting of this story. A lot of the terminology and concepts are derivitive of that research.
Without further ado, please enjoy!
PART ONE
Fate had a funny way of showing favor.
It seemed like every time I turned around, there was something or someone screwing me over. All I could think was...its fate.
Well guess what fate...screw you.
One –
"Drew, just talk to him!"
Mel received the dry look she deserved. As if it were that simple. I couldn't just go up to him and talk to him. I had no right. I was insignificant in his presence. I was an Omega. We simply didn't have rights, we were nothing but submissive little child bearers. Our entire existence was devoted to our beloved Alpha's.
And he was an Alpha.
A promised one at that. He showed great potential to be a leader. All of the Elders praised him and regarded him with interest. He was amazing. And his name was Kai.
I don't know what it was about him that just put me in a trance, but he bewitched me like no other. Sure, he was perfect, but that never mattered to me. His perfection was simply an added bonus. Maybe it was the way he carried himself, with confidence but not overly deserving. He was still humble. At least, that was how he appeared. I didn't know him enough to be the judge of that. I made my admiration existent only from a distance.
Melrose, my best friend and an Omega like myself, didn't understand why I wouldn't just go talk to him. She has been betrothed to a handsome and capable Alpha since she was four. She was happy and didn't understand why anyone else couldn't be. Life as an Omega just wasn't that simple. We never knew who we were going to end up with and sometimes we didn't even have a choice.
I wanted to talk to him, I did, but I couldn't risk the humiliation if he ended up being one of the douche bags who treated Omega's like dirt or slaves. I wasn't going to put myself through that, I couldn't. It could dishonor my family and I might not ever find a mate. I definitely couldn't risk that. I was already twenty years old, my clock was ticking.
Though, Kai was twenty four and he still hasn't found an Omega to claim, so maybe there is hope for us after all.
Hah! Yeah right!
I couldn't even talk to the guy. How could I possibly expect anything more than the occasional glance?
Why am I such a coward?
"Ugh, the humans are here again," Melrose sneered. I followed her line of vision down the court yard to the central gates. As if they were royalty, the human strolled in dressed in gaudy outfits and upturned noses. Why we let them in to examine us like science experiments continued to escape me.
"Look, it's that same snotty little human that was here before. I swear, if she keeps shooting flirty looks at my beloved then I'm going to tear out her jugular, that's a promise," Melrose seethed, watching as the human girl with dirty blonde curls done up in a ridiculous hairstyle that matched her equally ridiculous outfit. Why humans chose absurd ways to dress will forever befuddle me. If they are trying to impress us, they have failed...terribly.
I watched as the human girl leaned on the shoulder of Melrose's beloved. He seemed very unsure of how to handle her and before I could even register what was happening, a deep growl escaped from my best friend as she charged. I barely had time to react, running after her.
Melrose was a fierce warrior despite being an Omega. She passed all of her training classes at the top and was praised by the other Alphas which could be why she was so oblivious to the poor treatment of other Omega's. She was considered a prize to the Alphas and they treated her as such.
But if she were to hurt a human, that would be the end of her reputation. Most likely, she'd be tried and executed. I couldn't let that happen.
"Mel!" I screamed after her, hoping to catch the attention of the Alpha males who were being greeted by the humans, more specifically, her future mate.
Jackson, Melrose's beloved, turned at the sound of my voice. His piercing blue eyes widened as he just caught Mel's wrist before she could tear into the human. The human girl jumped back in fright, right into the arms of Kai. I fought the urge to snarl at her and focused on my calming down my friend. After all, she was way more important.
"Mel, listen to me. You have to calm down," I told her, holding her cheeks in my palms, as Jackson held her in a tight embrace.
Mel's beautiful brown eyes were wild as she glared at the human. I looked up at Jackson, silently urging him to ease her way. He gave an imperceptible nod, while whispering sweet nothings to his riled beloved. Slowly, he was able to pull her away from the humans who had gathered to watch the dangerous display.
Once they were far enough away, I turned to the human girl who watched me with fear, but underneath all of that, I saw a righteousness that I absolutely despised.
"Know when to back off, he's taken," I sneered at her.
That's when she decided to show her true colors. She curled her lip at me with a disgusted expression. Then she fixed her face to one of a helpless damsel. "I didn't know," she replied.
"If you continue to waltz in here, you better learn," I snapped.
"How dare you talk to me like that? You Omega!"
That was the last straw. I took a threatening step toward her leaning real close to her cheek. "Listen here human, an Omega is still a powerful Wolf that can rip you to shreds. Before you start throwing around words you don't know, learn what actually is an insult so you don't sound as stupid as you do now."
I could hear her heart race and I knew then that my threat was clear. I leaned back and smiled at her and Kai, ignoring the flips in my stomach when I met those piercing green eyes. I focused my gaze fully on him, watching him stare at me intensely, expression surprised but otherwise unreadable.
"Control your bitch," I growled and walked away.
I probably just ruined any chance with him and his complete opinion of me—if he even had one to begin with—but I had to defend my friend and her relationship. It wasn't right for the humans to jeopardize our society. If they want to stroll into our society any time they pleased, then they better learn to adapt.
I found the couple later on, by the fountain in the main square. Mel was cuddled up next to Jackson, with his jacket around her shoulders.
"Hey." I approached them with a smile that was returned.
"Hey Drew. Sorry about that," Mel apologized sheepishly. "I lost it back there. Those human's just rub me the wrong way."
"I know what you mean," I found myself murmuring softly.
"And I thank you as well. I don't know how I'm going to handle this firecracker." Though Jackson said the words to me, his eyes were focused on my best friend. They were just staring at each other, sharing a connection I fear I may never have.
"It's no problem to me. I'll see you guys around," I muttered, not really wanting to be around them anymore. I was really happy for them but standing there, witnessing a love so pure and blessed, I couldn't bear it. It was heartbreaking.
I ended up wandering the streets of the Community. The main city was probably as large as Hoboken, but then surrounding the city was the suburbs. After the ring of houses, schools, and parks, was the open forest that ran for acres upon acres. Though there was some point beyond those trees that caged us in, betraying our freedom. The humans didn't want us intermingling into their society so they built a wall that kept us inside. They were despicable creatures that had the nerve to keep us out of their world while they invaded ours at any time they wished. I hated them so much.
The way they held themselves irked me even more. The sight of their outrageously overdone hairstyles dyed obscenely bright colors that matched whatever equally offensive outfit they conjured up. I've seen them dressed as peacocks, cubes, lampshades, or resembled helicopters, eggs, and other questionable objects. I'm not quite sure when this strange era of fashion reached them, but we Wolves stuck to normal clothes like T-shirts, jeans, suits, etc. Anything before that hideous bout of fashion.
I sighed, running my fingers through my hair anxiously. Just thinking about them put me in an even worse mood.
I was about to head to one of the shops to pick up some things I needed for the house until I saw him again. Kai of course. He was still with that human whore and I've never seen a more disgraceful sight. I couldn't blame him though, she was pretty, but she was...human. I hoped he didn't fall for any of her schemes. Humans were always trying weasel their way into our society, hoping to intermingle with our Alphas and manipulate them into choosing a human for a mate. Absolutely sickening.
Kai was smart though, he wouldn't succumb to their spells. It was only a matter of time before he chose his mate, his Omega mate. And while the thought of the humans never getting him appealed to me like no other, knowing that I will never be that one for him ate at my heart.
I tried to turn around, slip away without them ever noticing my existence, but life doesn't always work out the way I wanted. The human saw me and pointed in my direction. I didn't try to hear what she was saying but I took it as my cue to high tail it out of there. I was by no means weak, but there was no way I could hold my own against an Alpha especially of his degree. If they wanted to fight with me, I was done for. It may seem cowardly for me to try to escape but I knew what would inevitably happen and I refused to risk myself. Any severe damage done to my body could affect my womb and I will never let that happen. Without the ability to bear children, I was...nothing.
I walked away from them faster, but still tried to maintain a non-suspicious presence. I didn't want them to know I noticed them and seem like I was running away, even though I was. Running away would invoke the Chase. When Alpha's sense someone or something weaker running away from them, they became these unstoppable machines that hunted their prey relentlessly until they captured them and most of the time mutilated them. It was impossible to break the Alpha out of the trance when he was under the spell of the Chase. That is why, the very first thing they drilled into our heads as children, is to never run from an Alpha...ever.
Because I couldn't run, it was that much easier for Kai to catch up to me. I flinched when he grabbed my shoulder.
"Wait," he called firmly, forcing me to a stop. I didn't turn around to face him, or even acknowledge his presence which was a sign of great disrespect. He waited patiently for me to turn around and when he realized I wouldn't, I heard him sigh. "Listen, I really think you should apologize to Robin. She didn't know that Jackson was betrothed or even that what she was doing was wrong—"
"Do you even hear yourself right now?" I interrupted him, absolutely livid. "You want me to apologize to that human? She touched another woman's mate—my best friend's—mate. If she were a wolf, that crime is punishable by death. And you want me to apologize to her?" I laughed without humor.
Kai looked alarmed when I finally turned around to glare at him. "She didn't know—"
"She didn't know," I laughed. "She didn't know. None of those humans know or even make an effort to know because they don't respect our customs or our culture! How long are you going to let them get away with not knowing? If they barge into our Community so frequently there is no excuse why they shouldn't be informed about our customs. It is disrespectful to our species! So no, I will not apologize to that human scum when she does not deserve it. I am sickened by the idiocy of the Community for allowing those creatures into our home! You are just as despicable as the humans who plague our people."
I glared at him before turning on my heel and walking away.
And every step I took was another dagger in my heart.
