“Bhai… headphones are EXTREMELY NECESSARY for music production…!”
“Umm…”
“For today connect to your speakers… nothing can be done but I’ll bring my headphones from the next day, don’t worry…”
“Eh? NExt day…?”
“Okay, let’s talk about that later- now let’s focus on FL”
I continued staring at his face for a while before he twisted my head towards the screen…
“This is a world you’d want to be of your own accord someday” he whispered
“Wha-”
DUM DUM
“AY AY- FULL VOLUME SPEAKERS; YOU MAD OR WhaT!!?”
His way of suddenly changing the flow of the conversation after saying something questionable is quite amazing…
“Oi oi slow down, explain to me- what’re you even doing? I don’t understand these…”
“1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and”
“What? What’s that?!”
“Okay… so… noob, that is a 4/4 (four by four) music rhythm used to count beats. Umm… you could figure it out as claps on the numbers and no-claps during the and(s)”
“Okay… so, let me clear this first- that knowledge just went beneath my balls.”
The music lesson begins.
“Okay listen, so this would be the rhythm- clap once, and then clap again and continue at the same ‘pace’ if you understand…”
I started clapping like a weirdo for no reason :) and whilst I was doing that, Dhruba began counting the numbers 1-2-3-4 with “and(s)” in between each number.
In a moment, there was a smile on my face, for we were doing a very childish and yet, a very interesting job :D
“There you go!” exclaimed PiX merrily after stopping abruptly “That’s a 4/4 rhythm; It’s nothing new as you can see, in fact music is all about organizing words or beats and stuff like that…”
And so, I learnt or better discovered for myself, a music rhythm- 4/4.
We got busy and lost ourselves in clapping and chanting:
1 (clap) - and - 2 (clap) - and - 3 (clap) - and - 4 (clap) - and
We kept repeating this until-
“XD You look like…”, said Dhruba and started laughing like El Rasitas
“Why are you laughing like kekw, what’s so funny?”
“Nothing XD, it just seems funny watching you do this all day XD XD XD”
“So… What do I look like? Stupid right?”
“I… You look like- (A lot like him…) A WEIRDO. NOW SHUT UP AND LOOK AT THE MONITOR; That’s the only rhythm you’d need now… Enough of your unemployed adrenalin and clapping, look at what I’m about to do here…”
I didn't quite understand what he was talking about but I was more interested in what he was teaching so I kind of ignored unnecessary lengthening of conversation and it was not like my mom would allow me to freely waste time doing “useless stuff” as deemed by her…
“Hmm…”
“Now, here you have to click on the 3rd icon from this place where Pattern 1 is written, This is called the Channel Rack. Here you will get the collection of all the instruments, samples and automations you will be using in your project.”
“I see so it’s the 3rd one from tha-”
“NOOO!”
“Eh?”
“Arre you don’t need to remember stuff like that, with reference to other points that is; This is not a jungle XD, be a little more civilized and look here on the top left at the status bar; it shows you the name of the icon or button you place your cursor at.”
“Huh… (I sighed) Okay, I see”
*knock knock*
Door Opens
There was my mom with a tray in her hand and also my brother who was peeking from behind the door as usual.
“Hello…” said my mom as she walked into the room.
She then lowered the tray containing food in front of Dhruba and continued, “um… Are you a new transfer student, like I have never seen or heard about you before… What's your name?”
“Ha?”
“Ah… I meant 6x4…” he fumbled, looking at me.
“It’s Dhruba Kumar Singha, my name. Aashito knows me; it’s just that we never had the chance to talk to each other previously” answered Dhruba with his default smile.
“Yeah mom, he was always there :)”
“I-I see…” said mom and walked out slowly, having nothing else to talk about. I looked at the tray (because I was really hungry) - it had two giant sized rosogolla on a plate along with a dish containing some chanachur and two pieces of cake.
I looked at Dhru- EH? Where is he-
“FOUND YOU-”
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA”
I turned back to find my mom looking at Dhruba with a surprised look, who on the other hand was staring at my brother, who again was lying on the floor with a shocked expression looking at him.
“WH- WHAT ARE YOU!??” screamed my brother.
“As you can see, I am just a friend of your brothers, no one suspicious so… DON’T PEEK!!”
And with that he energetically slammed shut the door!
“XDDD”
I had noticed my brother’s presence for a while, remained indifferent to him but XD
“Man, you are one of a kind- behaving madly like this in other people’s houses XD”
“Tch, anyway don’t think about even touching the food, first do what I say- you see the square-y shaped things beside all the 4 presets i.e., kick, clap, snare, etc..?”
“...Hmm” I replied, drooping into the chair.
“Good! Now create a nice rhythm with the combination of all the 4 presets”
“Eh? B-b-but how?”
“Okay, so click every 4th space from the first one beside the kick preset”
I did as he instructed
“Press the spacebar”
dum . . . dum . . . dum . . . dum . . . dum …
There were 16 spaces in every row and I selected the 1st, 5th, 9th and 13th positions, so in a constant interval the kicks kept on playing on and on until Dhruba pressed the spacebar.
“Blou glet it, blight?”
I looked at him and found him feasting on a rosogolla…
“Yeah” I replied with a smile yet again “This is so easy and interesting!”
“Hle hle, *gulp*... so now for your homework- Use these 4 presets and create some unique sounding tracks. After you create one, go on the menu bar here, then File > Export and then click on mp3 or wav”
“Are you leaving now?”
“If you want to keep me forever, marry me, you blockheaded simpleton”
“XD”
He picked up one of the cake pieces, separated the top layer, added a layer of chanachur in that layer and then after re-placing the top layer, he devoured it in two bites… Who puts chanachur inside a cake?
Everything about this boy is weird…
“Well I will be off, see you on Monday ;)”
“Okay… wait WHAT?”
“Yes, I will be coming next on Monday and WITH my headphones”
“But um…”
The stuff that I was about to say was the usual stupid stuff “My mom will not allow all these”, etc but I could not utter those words to the face of someone who was seriously interested in teaching me and was even going out of his way coming to my home…
“F A S T”
“...Nothing, see you on Monday!”
