My arms feel static. Fuck... Everything starts to go black. My ears are ringing. I hear glass shatter and wind rush by my ears. I open my eyes to see concrete and blood all around me. Screams surround my ears as swarms of people huddle near me. "Get back! Back!" I hear from a distance. Just leave... I see red and blue flashes as they put a mask over me, I can still taste the iron in my mouth from the blood. My sight goes blurry, to black again. I woke up. I'm on the floor of my room, with tears down my face. It happened again... I go to the planner and write the episode down.
I sit down at the table and close my eyes to think over this. What triggered this? My phone rang, I jumped. I checked it to see a text from my soon-to-be-flatmate, Knox. I've never met him, only a few chats with him online. A distant friend gave me his details so I could message him. I need a new flatmate because I don't have many friends and because I don't trust myself to be alone. The message said, "Hey Mateo, I'm on my way now. Be there soon." I looked around my place and sighed. This is such a mess. I haven't been doing well recently and it shows. I groan knowing I won't get all this done, and that he'll see all of it.
I start cleaning up little by little. I know that he'll be here before I'm done but might as well show that I respect myself. I start sweeping as I hear voices outside. A door shutting, "Thank you!". He's here. I could feel my heart start to race. I started breathing faster. But then it all stops when I hear the door knock. I go over to open it, it's Knox. He looks nothing like I expected.
"You're Mateo right?" He says. "Yes." "Alright, can I go set stuff down in my room first, then we can chat and figure things out." He said all this with a slight smile. I showed him where his room was. He said "Thank you.", and then was off. I saw him walk into his room and set his things down.
I start to get dizzy again. I sit down at the counter and take my prescription. I lay my head down on the table and close my eyes. Everything hurts, I need to get up but I can't. While laying down I hear footsteps come across the floor, the light switch flicks, and the stole beside me is being pulled out. "Is everything alright Mateo?" Hah, no, do you even need to ask me that? Look around at this hole I call home. I didn't say anything. I just put my head up and looked at his face. He was smiling and unwrapping one of the mints on the counter.
I shake my head, "No." "Alright, well that's something we can work out." I smiled. He's much nicer than I thought he would be, and he's not bothered by my clutter.
He started speaking again, "So I work most nights, except on weekends. I work at the bar just down the road." A bartender? "Oh, alright. I'm a translator and work from home, most of the time I do it I'm the mornings." He smiled and nodded his head. "That's great! Means we get time to hang out more. Do you have any..." His voice trailed off as he looked through my pantry and fridge. "Do you have any alcohol?" I laughed and said, "Only wine, on the shelf behind the fridge." "Alright, well that's gotta change soon. I'm a bartender, and alcohol is kinda' my thing." So he is a bartender. I see him walk back into his room and start rummaging through his bags.
I set my head back down on the table to try and ease the pounding. But then I hear bottles clinking together so I look up. He has a few bottles of what looks like some plain vodka and hard cider. Hard cider? Does he drink that stuff? "Do you really drink hard cider?" He laughs and sets the bottles on the shelf, next to the wine. "No! This stuff tastes like shit! I only ever add it to a few drinks I like. Why do you?" He's still laughing a little. "No, of course not, why do you think only have wine?" He sits down across from me at the counter, "I suppose that makes sense."
There is a moment of quiet before I get up and go to the medicine drawer. I grab some stuff for headaches and swallow it. "I'm going to bed, I don't feel well." I looked over at me, "Alright, do you need anything else from me? I mean I just got here." I laughed, "If you could clean this shit hole up, that would be great." We both laughed a little. I slowly start to walk back into my room. He yells back, "G'night then Mateo." I don't reply. I crawl into my bed and go to sleep.
