(This Chapter is in Hunter's POV)
But I still went with him. Sigh. I can’t help it when he’s offering free food. Also, they are pancakes. Double the whammy! I am really easy, aren’t I?
Thankfully we finished school and I have no work back home.
It’s not like anyone’s waiting for me there anyway. I’ll accept it.
“Aren’t you driving too fast, sir?”
“I am still under the speed limit, my speed limit!”
Is that something you should be doing in front of your student? Speeding is a crime, you know?
“Are the pancakes fluffy though? You know I don’t like them soggy.”
“Yes, they are. In fact, I made sure to call them beforehand to ask if they are serving them fresh now.”
“You are going far and beyond for someone like me.”
“Don’t say that. You’re like a son to me. I’ll let you know that much.”
Mr Miller has helped me so much in the past. I can’t repay him no matter what I do. He’s the only person who was aware of my situation and still treated me like a human. I really value him.
My thoughts were disturbed by a sudden stop of the car. It seems like we’ve finally arrived.
“We’ve arrived, kiddo!”
“Mr. Miller I am in highschool. Year 11 even! I stopped being a kid a year ago.”
Don’t call me a kid! The me in here might be childish but I don’t want to appear that way!
“You’d be a kid to me even if you were just a day younger, Hunter. Let’s go in.”
This place looks really fancy for a café. Is he really going to pay for me? If not I’ll let you know I can’t afford it, okay? I am pretty broke!
“Hunter, go sit there while I pick your order for you. This place makes you pay before you get your meal.”
Oh, thank God, he wasn’t joking. He is going to pay!
A few minutes passed, and he came back holding two cups of coffee.
He sat down and placed the cups on the table in front of me.
“This is for you.” He handed me a cup. It was an iced coffee, the kind I like.
Mr. Miller then took a small bottle out of his jacket and poured something in his cup of coffee.
“Aaaand this is for me.”
Is that alcohol? Why does this teacher not care about social standards? Does alcohol even taste good with black coffee?
“You sure it’s okay for you to be drinking midday like this?”
“It’s one of the joys of being an adult. You wouldn't understand.”
“Oh, I am sure it is.”
“Are you jealous of my adultness? Or is it because I can do whatever I want? I’ll let you know I wasn’t able to do what I wanted back in Sudan let alone drink alcohol!”
“Mr. Miller isn’t a Sudanese name though.”
“Yeah, it’s because I changed it! Do you want to know my old name?”
Not really.
“Not really.”
“Not even a moment of hesitation! I will tell you anyways! It used to be Abdul Kareem.”
“Why did you change it? Doesn’t seem like a bad name.”
“It was long for one. And I changed it to get away from some people.”
I’ve never heard that before. Since when has Mr. Miller ever been afraid of someone that he had to change his name?
I can’t pry. I will leave it be.
“Here are your orders sirs.” A young familiar guy appeared holding two plates of delicious looking pancakes.
“Oh, thank you-” I murmured before glancing at him.
Wait… I know this guy. But why does he look surprised seeing me here? I don’t think he knows me. Oh wait, maybe he’s surprised seeing the teacher here.
“Didn’t know you were working here, Jay.” Said Mr Miller while giving me my plate.
“Uhm… Yes I am, Mr Miller. I didn’t think I’d see anyone from school though.”
He seemed to be nervous. Wait, am I scary? I thought I was only weird.
“You guys serve good pancakes here. So, I had to come with Hunter over here.”
Hey! Weren’t we supposed to make it a secret? Why are you telling him?
“Thank you sir. I must go back to do my job though. I will see you in school.” he said that but seemed to sneak a glance at me.
“See you Jay! Take care!”
Jay walked away leaving Mr. Miller and I to our newfound plates of pure bless.
“I didn’t know you knew Jay, Hunter.”
Are you surprised I have friends sir? I'll let you know that I actually don't have any friends!
“I don’t. Not on a personal level at least. I only knew he was a library assistant.”
Only because I slept there sometimes.
Anyways, I really can only care about this mission in front of me. I will destroy this pancake. For I am the finisher of all pancakes, the lord of sweet destructions!
“Hunter, you’re kind of making a weird face right now.”
There is only one problem now however, and that’s-
