(This Chapter is in Mr Miller's POV)
“Mr. Miller! Why didn’t you help me out?” said Hunter in a sad tone.
I cannot lie, that made me feel sorry for him. But I need him to do some work. It’s for his own sake.
“I simply thought you were good on your own. See, you accepted to do it! I am so proud of you Hunter.”
“Accepted? That was bullying… I was coerced into doing it! But I guess it was fine for you to see me like that.”
“Look, I feel bad for what happened. However, it is true that you need to do some work. Can’t you do it for me at least?”
“Sigh… I should have known you'd set me up like that… So? Why this?”
Why, indeed. Hunter is a really smart kid. He has the ability, but never puts it to use. I don’t want him to waste himself like that.
A simple event like November’s assembly will help him improve himself. It will force him to work with others and figure out some solutions with them. It is what he needs.
“Hunter. You are a talented man. I want you to show me what you can do. A public assembly like the one in November is a great chance for you to show yourself off.”
“But sir, I really do not want to show myself. I would rather just sleep.”
“I know you would. But that’s exactly what you shouldn’t be doing! Look at yourself in the mirror, Hunter. Your eyes are dead. You have bags under them, darker than the night's.”
He sighed and looked down for a bit.
I am sure he doesn’t get enough sleep at home as is. But as a teacher, I can’t encourage him sleeping in the class even if he does well on his exams and schoolwork.
“Hey Hunter. Say… I found a place that makes really great pancakes. Do you want to come with?”
He laughed.
“Is that supposed to be an apology?”
“You can think of it as you want. I will pay and drive you there of course. Just don’t let any of the other students know. I can’t be caught giving special treatment to one student.”
“Wow… Don’t think that you can bribe me with some pancakes!”
