The Acadian Deportation came into mainstream culture through the works of Longfellow with this grand, romantic poem, Evangeline. The same romantism endures in our self image, just look at the works of Antonine Maillet, for an example. There is a certain charm in that vision but the Acadie I grew with is not so Disneyifingly romantic but has a certain heroism that's just as beautiful, though a lot rougher around the edges.
