I walked down an alley that had a metal décor piece hanging above the alley of the same marker, my boots were quiet on the pavement as I walked, and the alley was entirely empty too. It was extremely short and only had this small square section with an archway adorning the brick wall. I fished the charm out of my pocket as I looked towards it then the wall as I turned it in my hand before I held it out towards the archway, wary as to what would happen, where this archway is going to deposit me along with everything else of that sort that makes me have a panic disorder. The same logo at the top of the archway flashed softly green as the archway seemed to ripple with that same hazy veil before I felt the same pulling feeling before I stumbled a few feet as my shoulder met wall of another building as I stumbled out into another alley. I walked out as I saw that I was now in downtown London.
“Shit” I muttered quietly thinking about how far away I was when I went into Towerblock.
I made my way back towards the department, but as I walked…I had a weird though, I took out my phone as I looked at my case, looking to see if it had the loop for a charm to hang from it, which it did, so I took out the charm for Towerblock out of my pocket and fastened it to my phone case. Hopefully, the people I work with who are magical see the charm and realize that I know that they exist and all and would…be willing to help me however they can. At least…I might have some idea of how to help find and get this thief if it turns out that this thief is magical.
When I eventually got back to the department, but soon after I got back to my desk in the bullpen, I started getting snapped at by various co-workers about how I just vanished for two and a half hours, even if I am a detective and all, I need to submit the proper paperwork if I need to do a stakeout or something. I just explained as best as I could without revealing that I accidently found myself in a different underlayer of London that’s filled with magical people and all of the craziness I saw. As many times as I said, it’s a long story, the snapping at me about suddenly vanishing for a few hours turned to concern or worry about what happened to me which I just kept brushing off as it was nothing bad, nothing happened among everything of that sort.
It was later in the evening when someone who works here that I never really talked to before suddenly appeared on this floor, they met my eye as they motioned to their phone and as slyly as they could motion to the new charm that was hanging on the corner before motioning for me to go towards them as they ducked back into the hall where the lifts were. I looked around before standing and walking towards that hall as I followed them and ducked into the large stairwell of the department. The person was standing there with their back to the wall, but there were…two other people in the stairwell with them, also people I did not recognize.
“So, our resident Seer found home.” The one on the left said as she slid down the concrete walls on sharp claws, icy pale with long dark hair that in the florescent light nearly looked ruddy, pale eyes that as she looked towards me flashed red as she smiled showing long, sharp fangs. She was dressed in the uniform of a regular field officer, the same dark uniform with all of the silvery embellishments and black boots.
“Don’t scare him, Mabel.” The one in the middle said, the one who motioned for me to follow them, she was a taller, fuller figured woman with deep, rich skin and braided hair that fell down her back, dressed in normal clothing with a lab coat overtop, maybe forensics, but the smell on her was one that instantly placed where she worked…the morgue.
“Come on, am I not allowed to tease him a little?” the woman, the vampire, Mabel, I’m guessing asked with a shrug.
“Not if you want to keep those fangs of yours” the woman in the lab coat sighed, “I’m sorry about her, Dorian”
“You…know my name?” I asked
“You’re one of the youngest investigators in the office and you’re wondering how I know your name?” she asked with a soft laugh, her eyes matched so she’s not like me, but I couldn’t exactly see what she was like Mabel, or the guy on the right who’s body flashed as all of his skin turned into scales of blues, greens and teal tones, hair turning into a mess of jellyfish tentacles as his eyes glowed green…I’d say merman, but he still had legs, so I’m guessing maybe triton.
“I know that…we may scare you a little” the man said
“But we want you to know that we are doing nothing illegal in our jobs here, our jobs in Towerblock were the exact same as we’re doing here, just now we also have very minor details we have to do to keep the city hidden from…humans and all” the woman in the lab-coat said with a shrug.
“I know” I said with a soft nod
“There’s usually one or two of us in every police department across the city, even the hospital, fire department and the dispatch offices.” Mabel said, “there’s just three of us here due to this being the largest department in the city.”
“And you ended up here completely by random chance…though when we reported you being here to our higher ups, we reported that you had yet found yourself around any magic, so you were still in the dark.” The triton man said
“You…reported me?” I asked
“Not in a bad way” Mabel said, “We just had to notify our boss back in Tower that a Seer still in the dark was in the office now and when you started showing signs of being dyed in the colours of magic…we needed to inform them.”
“Why?”
“Because our higher ups like Seers to be part of the magic departments, your eyes are unlike all of us, so…your abilities are extremely rare in our world, and they want them in our ranks.”
“A job offer?” I asked
“A side hustle more so” Mabel added
“Sorry for not introducing all of us earlier, that’s Mabel, I’m Victoria and that’s Kegan.” The woman in the lab-coat said, “And Mabel is not wrong, the position our bosses want to offer you is not a transfer from here, you’d still work here…that part is perfectly the same and nothing has changes, just…whenever we get a report or anything about a magical crime, you help us…keep the humans in the dark and if you wish, slowly…your duties would be lessened here and deepened there to mitigate the transfer process to our office.”
“You’re offering me a job…to help destroy evidence?” I asked
“Dori…do you know what happened when all of us were last known about?” Kegan asked making me glare at him.
“Please, do not call me Dori, I hate that.” I added, he held his hands up in defence with a shrug. I honestly cannot stand people calling me Dori.
“And no and yes to the “destroy evidence” part, Mabel usually is able to get rid of anything overtly magical with criminals that are brought in who belong to our world.” Victoria explained, “Anything that ends up in forensics I usually handle and anything with the calls and reports that has to do with our world Kegan takes care of. What you would be handling with our office would be the exact same thing you’re doing here.”
“The thief?” I asked
“Exactly, our department also knows of it, but obviously as the thief is magical…they have a lot more information than any of the reports you have sitting on your desk” Mabel added
“You would also start receiving a salary for working with us two as you’ll be working with us too. Your workload and everything will be the exact same as now, just…you’ll have some more access to information and various resources that humans are not privy to.” Kegan explained.
“Interview?” I asked, Victoria laughed softly before reaching into her lab-coat and handed me a white business card.
“Just go into Towerblock from any entrance and press your thumb on the insignia on the right edge of the card, it’ll summon you to the department’s teleportation annex, just a word of precaution…hold your breath when you do so, teleportation magic is hellish on the stomach your first handful of times.” She explained
