Having worked as a researcher on a ship for several two week stints, I never did get used to all the engine noise and rattling. The drop-ceilings in the bunks rattled, the lockers rattled, the gear rattled. It wasn't so bad when we were cruising, but since it was a science mission, we had to be on station every few hours, and then the bow thrusters would come on and the winches would deploy instruments. Let's just say nowhere was quiet, and earplugs and headphones only helped so much. Maybe I'll go again next year, but I'm not planning on getting a ton of sleep. 😪
