Wei Xiao rubbed his left thumb over his right thumb’s proximal phalanx¹. He nervously lifted his head and shook his head. Just like a small kitten, his slightly droopy eyes had moistened with a hazy mist as a psychological reaction. The doctor almost choked from the cuteness but quickly became apprehensive.
A sudden chill crept down his spine, spooking him. His intuition was correct as he faced the unhappy Wei Tian. The doctor could only give an ingratiating smile in return and cry on the inside. He still had a job to do!
Wei Xiao anxiously gave a fleeting glance to the right and hurriedly looked back down. His muscles were tense once again.
His actions made the doctor feel extremely guilty as if he had somehow bullied him. Clearing his throat, he proceeded to ask more questions.
Wei Xiao was timid but he obediently answered each and every question, albeit he still refused to use his voice. His glassy eyes made him seem so defenseless and innocent. It made one unable to even raise their voice at him. Everyone inadvertently lowered their breathing even more.
The nurse who had been watching on the side was itching to go and hug this adorable creature, but she was aware of his disorder and held back. She tightly gripped the clipboard to reduce her urge, but her eyes clearly said ‘OMG! I want to hug! So cute~’
The doctor walked next to the bedside with light steps so as to not frighten him. "Mrs. Wei, if I may?"
Deliberately making his voice even softer, it was hushed like a whisper as to be mindful of the little skittish kitten. Zhou Rongrong glanced at her son and reluctantly stood up and took a step back after giving him a reassuring smile.
“Okay, go ahead.”
She knew it was wrong of her to baby him at every step. He was no longer a toddler or a child who needed someone to teach them how to walk or hold his hand and guide him, he would soon become a young man.
Wei Yue lowered her voice and also gave her encouragement. “Don’t be scared, didi. The doctor and nurse are only doing their job.”
Wei Xiao grasped the sheets, showing that he was a little uncomfortable. Yet despite it, he was quick to acquiesce.
The doctor ordered the nurse to grab his tools and she quickly returned with a bag in her hand and handed it over to him. Taking out his equipment, the doctor did a quick examination on Wei Xiao to make sure that everything was alright.
From what he read from the nurse’s report, Wei Xiao was supposed to still be asleep from the medication at this time. That’s why he had initially warned Wei Tian and Zhou Rongrong about this when they wanted to visit him.
The two of them had just gotten back from a long flight and rushed back to see him. The doctor was aware of the deep love they had for their ill-fated son. Thus, he tried to advise against it as their visit would have ended up in disappointment as their son would be resting.
But who knew that when they arrived, he would be proved wrong.
This greatly puzzled the doctor. He was present when the nurse measured out each dosage before she left the room, and there wasn’t anything wrong with the amount she had taken. He decided to run some tests.
Waiting for his blood to be drawn, Wei Xiao quietly observed the incoming needle, expressing a bit of uneasiness. Psychological tears were squeezed out as it pricked into his skin and into his vein, wetting his long lashes. He watched the crimson blood fill the tube from the thin and hollow needle. His hidden eyes flickered faintly.
Wei Tian and Zhou Rongrong looked on in distress. They comforted and praised him for being brave and a good boy.
After the examination and the first part of the results came out, the doctor was befuddled. He found that there was nothing physically wrong with Wei Xiao.
His bodily function looked to be as it normally would and was without any irregularity. The next thing would be to wait for the last half of the results, his blood work. Once it was in his hands, and he would be able to see if there were any issues there.
Feeling the prickly gaze from Wei Tian, the doctor hurriedly gave a call to the lab. Aiya… He must hurry before he’s devoured by his employer!
Having it rush at the fastest speed, the doctor found that the medication was still faintly in his system and had yet to fully metabolize. Which meant that there were no mistakes made earlier today, so why was he awake?
Pondering, the doctor looked at the past results before making any judgment. Over the years, Wei Xiao’s body has been building a tolerance to his medication and as his tolerance level increased, the dosage had been incremented over time as well.
Scrutinizing at the results once more and talking with the technician at the lab, the doctor made a guesstimation that the dosage of the medication was currently not enough. He had also taken a look at the past reports and timeline, further justifying his supposition.
Just as he peered at Wei Xiao, the doctor was a little bemused.
He could not tell what was wrong today but the young master seemed a little different than usual. There wasn’t anything that particularly stood out… Perhaps it was because Wei Xiao’s eyes seemed to be giving off a different vibe than usual? Glancing at Wei Xiao, the doctor found his thoughts farcical and shook his head. Pushing the thought away, he must be overthinking things too much.
The doctor informed Wei Tian and Zhou Rongrong that Wei Xiao was fine and gave an explanation of the analysis. Everyone soon let out a breath of relief, their expressions loosened.
Wei Yue gently smiled. “It’s great that didi is alright.”
Zhou Rongrong stroked Wei Yue’s head. “Yes, it's a blessing that nothing happened to Xiao Bao.”
He then asked to speak to Wei Tian and Zhou Rongrong in private to discuss certain issues. They both looked at each other before nodding, it was best to not speak of particular subjects out loud for their children to hear.
Wei Tian and Zhou Rongrong talked to Wei Xiao for a bit before they followed after the doctor. When they bypassed Wei Yue, they said some words of comfort and informed her to stay in the room to keep her younger brother company before leaving.
After they departed, the only ones left inside with Wei Xiao were the nurse and Wei Yue.
The nurse helped administer a small dose of Wei Xiao's medication as instructed by the doctor. She was extremely bubbly and gave him a small piece of candy to get rid of the bitter taste of the medicine. The look in her eyes showed that she was extremely content with being able to finally interact with the adorable kitten. Afterward, she made sure that he was comfortable and bid Wei Xiao goodbye.
Wei Yue smiled sweetly and politely thanked the nurse.
Sitting by Wei Xiao’s bedside, Wei Yue looked like a caring older sister. She made some small talk, vividly recounting everything without seeming bothered that the other side wasn’t responding.
In the time it took an incense stick to burn², Wei Yue spoke patiently—when all of a sudden she stood up and her oriole-like voice abruptly cut off.
The pure and virtuous look from earlier was swept away in an instant as her emerald eyes narrowed, glowing sinisterly like a malevolent demon. Her saccharine smile disappeared like ashes in the wind.
It also made Bao Bao extremely discombobulated. He gawked at her in disbelief, unable to say anything. Σ(⊙0⊙; ) This doesn’t seem right! What’s with her smile? Why does she look like that?!
Even without looking, Wei Xiao could sense the change in the atmosphere. He lowered himself and shivered uncontrollably.
Looking at his pathetic figure cowering, Wei Yue’s eyes seemed to give a ridiculing light, a sneer forming on her scarlet lips.
She roughly yanked him off the bed. The force she exerted wasn’t small as a painful but muffled thud reverberated in the room. Wei Xiao landed on the ground, his hands barely stabilized his upper body from the fall as his bottom and knees slammed against the carpeted floor.
Wei Xiao bit his lower lip and stifled a groan. However, he didn’t move even after falling. Like a small herbivore caught by a vicious predator who only wanted to toy with him until he died, he froze in place.
Wei Yue didn’t give him a chance to recover as she pulled his head back and slapped him across his face. Feeling that it wasn’t enough, Wei Yue gave him a few more slaps. Although she was furious, Wei Yue remembered to withhold her strength.
Once the skin on her hands started to ache, she released her grip on his hair and drew back her leg, swiftly knocking him on the ground with a kick. Shielding his head with his arms, Wei Xiao left his body unprotected.
Wei Yue was able to land kick after kick on his body unimpeded. She purposefully aimed for the places where others wouldn’t usually look at. Subsequently, her rationality started to slip and the control she had over her temper was ebbed away as she vented.
Feeling her frustration rise, she continued to kick him but with more strength. Her eyes reddening because she was so angry that she wanted to cry.
Espying the tears on his face, Wei Yue gave him a hard kick. "Why are you crying? You don’t deserve to cry! How much pain and misery are you going to bring to this family?”
She execrated, “If only you had died… I wouldn’t be treated like this!”
“It’s all your fault. Why couldn’t you have just died? If you would have just died, I wouldn’t be like this…”
Wei Xiao issued a soft groan as he curled his body into a fetal position. Her shrill voice was beginning to become muffled. His eyelashes trembled as his breathing became difficult and bouts of dizziness surfaced. A heavy pressure was gradually felt in his chest, as if it was squeezing his heart. Then, a numbing pain radiated from his left arm and shoulder, making him lose sensation in his fingers.
Tears were subconsciously falling from his eyes. It was as if a heated blade was being dragged across his skin, peeling it.
¹Proximal phalanx:
²In the time it took an incense stick to burn: 一柱香的时间 yī zhù xiāng de shíjiān is a poetic way of referring to a short amount of time. It could either mean 5 minutes or 30 minutes, depending on who uses it. I’m using it as 5 minutes.
