Walking through these strange trees, I couldn't help but remember a dream I had years ago. Actually, it is a dream I have on occasion that lingers in my mind, showing itself in my thoughts from time to time. I would walk on this dirt path. The dirt though was muddy, so it was darker than it would usually be. I could hear the squishing under my feet when I walked, looking behind me I could see shallow imprints of my footprints. It was not raining but it must have moments before I entered this part of my dream. Where I am now in this forest reminds of that part of that dream. I never knew where I was going but I knew that I was going somewhere. However, I feel less and less comfortable walking through here even though my curiosity was pushing me forward.
Life before this seems like a distant dream. In a place like this, it is easy to get lost both physically and in that adventurous spirit. Such a place I never knew could exist but here it is. Everything was silent, myself being so far the only life moving through this terrain. Branches crunch beneath me under the pressure of my footsteps. After a few moments, I heard a branch break again, this time from behind. I stopped immediately only to hear another branch break. Another and another snapping. I turned around to see nothing was there, but I know that something is watching me, following me as I move through this forest filled with mystery. I stayed as I was for a few moments, hearing no other sounds besides my own breathing. I faced back to the direction I was going in, ready to once again find a way out of this place.
Before I took another step, a loud howl echoed through the forest. My heart began to race and before I knew it, I found myself running as fast as I can. The only thought I had was that something was trying to hunt me down, and I can only assume that if I don't keep running until I either find my way out of this place or find some sort of shelter or hiding place; whatever it is that might be following me might try to hunt me down. From the howl that I heard, I can assume that it was a wolf. Either alone or in a pack, I couldn't take any chances.
I kept running while my thoughts were doing the same, I couldn't help but to think the worst while at the same time thinking about my hope of finding a way out soon. In this place I couldn't stop thinking that what I think is a wolf or a wolf pack could be something completely different. In this place, nothing that I know might be truth, and what may be the cause of that howl could be far worse than I could ever imagine. At the same time I could be running for no reason. Maybe there is nothing chasing me, maybe it was just a sound in a distance…
I kept running anyways. Tree after tree, row by row they stand before me. A place to hide behind or the very things that are helping me stay alive. I keep running seeing the vast rows of tall trees start to diminish. Fewer and fewer as I pass them by. I think I was almost of of here, and within moments I found that I reached the edge of the forest, the exit I was looking for. After I ran out finally free of that place, I turned around to look at what I am now leaving behind. There I saw, hidden in the shade of the trees, standing tall almost twice the height of myself were a pair of eyes, red as blood glaring at me. They look before disappearing back into the darkness...
