After hearing about what was going on, Daisy was fuming. Not at me, but at Mum. She couldn’t believe her. She immediately made the decision that I wouldn’t be going back home, and would be staying with her for the remainder of the year. She said she would get my stuff for me, and all I had to do was relax and try to heal while keeping up with school. Once I was healed, then we would talk about splitting rent and everything. Possibly even looking into a two bedroom apartment. She was letting me take the couch since she was in a one bedroom apartment. For a moment I really thought it was over and I was finally free from my parents. But of course that wouldn’t be as easy as I thought.
The next morning I woke up in excruciating pain. My back was burning so badly. Daisy was up way before I was, and was waiting for me to wake up.
“Oh! Finally you’re awake!” Daisy smiled. She had been doing some school work at the table across from the couch while waiting for me to wake up. “How are you feeling?”
“Fine.” I mumbled.
“Oh don’t give me that.”
“In pain.” I admitted.
“Figured. Just relax ok? I’ll go get you breakfast and we’ll go from there.”
I nodded. Thankfully it was Saturday so I didn’t have any school. Trying to walk around felt painful even just thinking about it. Daisy came back shortly after with breakfast for the both of us and we sat and ate in peace. For most of the day, we took it easy. Daisy helped me with everything. She didn’t want the stitches I had to come out nor did she want me causing myself more pain than I needed.
For the next couple days, I stayed at Daisy’s. It was absolutely amazing not having to be around Mum, or to not hear anything from her. I felt like I was a freaking person for once. But I did have my moments. My fears were still very much there, and it would take a while to get over them. I still occasionally saw Daisy as Mum and would freak out, and I still panicked if I felt I did something wrong. Thankfully Daisy was usually there to help me through that moment.
As for school, I ended up missing the first couple classes because it still hurt to move. My professors were quite understanding and sent me all the notes and work by email. Seeing as I didn’t have much else to do, I spent most of the day working on homework, studying, and taking the occasional nap. Once I started going back to classes, I felt so much better. I was able to concentrate more, and wasn’t stressed like before. A feeling I hoped would last forever.
Dad checked in by text quite a bit, but I heard nothing from Mum. She wasn’t even mentioned unless I was venting my feelings to Daisy. I let Dad know that I was much happier with Daisy, and that I would be staying for the remainder of my year. Dad seemed ok with it, but made it clear that Mum wouldn’t be once she found out, and I would eventually have to face her. I knew that would be the case, but there was no way I was going back. Knowing this whole thing would probably cause an argument, I feared the day she would find out and try to force me to come back home.
Almost a week after the big argument, I was all settled in. Dad had actually packed up my stuff for me, and drove it down earlier in the week. He was happy to see that I was in a better state of mind and agreed that moving out was the best decision. He was doing his best to keep Mum unaware of the whole thing. As far as she knew, I was just spending some time with Daisy. Like one big sleepover.
Unfortunately, after a whole week of being at Daisy’s, she found out. Dad wasn’t one to lie, so when she demanded the truth, he had to tell.
Dad : hey, your mother knows about you moving out. I would expect a call soon.
Me : oh no, is she mad
Dad : yea. I’m going to try to get her to calm down, but I think you know how that usually goes.
Me : ugh yea, ig I’ll have to deal with it
Dad : just don’t freak out
I sighed. I hadn’t been looking forward to this at all. I just hoped she wouldn’t be calling soon. Daisy was out shopping so I wouldn’t be able to use her as backup. I was going to have to handle this on my own. Out of panic, I called Daisy. She would know how to handle this.
“Hey.” I said once she picked up the phone.
“Hey! I didn’t forget something to pick up at the store did I?” Daisy laughed.
“You’re good.”
“What’s up then?”
“Ugh, Mum just found out about the moving out thing.” I said quietly. “Dad said she’s not happy.”
“Well, we did know that would be coming.” Daisy sighed. “I imagine she’ll try to do something about it. I’ll try to finish shopping as quickly as I can, ok? That way if she comes down or calls, I’ll be there.”
“Thanks.”
“I’ll see you soon.”
I hung up and tried to calm down. My anxiety was getting the better of me. Just speaking with Mum scared the shit out of me. Ever so luckily for me, I didn’t have time to stress out about talking to her. Shortly after I ended the call with Daisy, Mum called. I stared at my phone with fear for the first couple rings before picking it up on the last ring. There was an awkward silence before Mum said anything.
“So. You’ve moved out with Daisy.” She said in a cold tone.
“Uh, yea.” I muttered. “I did.”
“And she’s really ok with this?” Mum asked. “Cuz’ I swear if you’re stressing her out and being a problem, I will drag you back here.”
“I swear I’m not being a problem.” I promised. I was surprised she was even asking. I thought she would be dragging me back regardless of how Daisy felt.
“Fine. I’m not happy about it, but if you’re really doing as well as your father says you are there, then I suppose you can stay.”
“Uh, thanks?”
“You make it sound like a question.”
“Sorry, I just, uh, didn’t expect you to react like this.”
“Your father isn’t letting me drag you back so you can thank him for that.”
I didn’t know what to say, so I stayed quiet. There was another awkward silence before Mum spoke up again.
“Oh, and about the other day…” She said in a softer tone. “I’m sorry for doing what I did. I didn’t realize how hard I was hitting you.”
“I shouldn’t have yelled at you.” I sighed.
“Darn right you shouldn’t have.”
“Sorry.” I apologized.
“Just don’t do it again.” Mum said.
“I won’t.” I said quietly. “Look, I better go…”
“Okay. See you.”
“See ya.” I ended the call and let out a sigh of relief. That went way better than I thought it would’ve gone. For once Mum was being somewhat reasonable.
Shortly after that call, Daisy got back home with the groceries.
“Hey.” She said as she entered the apartment. “Did Mum call?”
“Yea, she did.” I replied.
“Oh, how did that go?? She’s not too upset is she?”
“No, she actually said she was ok with it as long as I wasn’t stressing you out.” I explained. “She’s obviously upset, but I think Dad was the one to get her to calm down and let me stay.”
“Wow. About time Dad put his foot down.”
“Yea.”
“Well, that’s good she’s not fighting this. Hopefully the rest of the school year is peaceful huh?”
“We can only hope.”
