おくりびと | Departures

This chapter is about my grandmother's encoffining ritual held in the family home.
After a prayer by a monk, the ritual began. The entire process was performed in front of the family by professional morticians.
Morticians cleaned my grandmother's body with a cloth and lukewarm water. They then applied makeup to her face and dressed her in a white death robe.
Next, members of the family were invited to cover her hands and feet. In the final panel of the comic, I am putting white socks on her feet.
The encoffining ritual depicted here is not widely practiced and has specific regional features. If you're curious about the process, you can gain some insight from the 2008 Academy award winning film おくりびと (Departures), which was filmed and set on the same street where my grandmother lived and spent most of her life. The ritual is portrayed in this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
