I woke up late the next morning. I felt as if I could sleep more. I was exhausted. Groggily, I looked over at my clock. My heart almost dropped when I saw the time. I slept in way more than I meant to, and for some reason my alarm didn’t go off. I only had an hour before my exam. Shit!!
I pulled myself out of bed, threw on some clothes, and went to grab my textbooks to get in some last minute studying. That’s when I realized they were gone. Daisy must have taken them!! Damn it!! I ran out of my room and tried to find where Daisy would’ve put my books. They were nowhere to be found. I was starting to panic.
“Calm down.” Mum said suddenly. I whipped around to see Mum standing behind me just as I was about to go to Daisy’s room. “Are you looking for your books?”
I nodded.
“I’ve got them.” She said.
“Oh thank god! Can I have them? I need to get some last minute studying in!”
“Breakfast first. Then you can have them.”
I groaned, and quickly went to grab breakfast. Unfortunately, not too long after, it all came back up from having such high anxiety. Go figure. Mum gave me my books back and I was able to get some studying in. Mum also gave me a drive to school because I was still not feeling too great. I got to my exam, got it done and came out almost certain I failed. I had to call Mum again because she forgot to come and pick me up on time. When I got home, I had to puke once more (what fun that was), and then Mum forced me to go to bed. I fell asleep pretty quickly, even though I didn’t want to.
I woke up late that night. Everyone was already asleep. Groggily, I got up and looked around. It was pitch black in my room, with the only light source being from moonlight shining through the window. I sat on my bed for a bit before getting up and turning on the lamp I had on my desk. Thankfully all my books were still there. I snuck out of my room, made a small cup of coffee and headed back into my room. I was careful not to wake anyone up. I then sat down at my desk and got right into studying. I had my last exam to do early the next morning and I wasn’t about to fail that one too. I got to work, and quickly lost track of time.
Before I knew it, my alarm clock was going off. The morning sun was shining into my room, blinding me a bit. I was about to go turn off my alarm when Mum passed by my room. She got up at the same time I did. Her room was right next to mine, so she passed by my room on her way out. She saw me and stopped in her tracks.
“Kevin?”
I paused and looked over at her with a nervous laugh. “Morning.”
“Don’t tell me you’ve been up all night studying.” Mum raised a brow.
“Um, maybe?”
Mum leaned over to take a look at my desk. “And is that a cup of coffee??”
I laughed nervously.
Mum groaned. “When’s your exam.”
“Uh, in an hour.”
“Get ready.”
I nodded. I quickly got ready and headed to my exam. Mum had work that day so I had to get there on my own. I wasn’t feeling too great to be driving, so I walked. It was only a 30 minute walk, and I needed to clear my head anyway.
I got to my exam just in time. The walk exhausted me more than I thought it would, and it was making me feel lightheaded, I suppose this was my fault for not eating breakfast. I was in too much of a rush. I was just going to have to live with my mistakes. My exam was handed to me and I got right to it. Every second was important. Especially if I wanted any chance of passing. I blew through the multiple choices, but the written ones got me. They were making me think so hard I was feeling nauseous and lightheaded. I was starting to sweat and overheat. It wasn’t making it easier to get through the exam at all.
I kept pushing through, but once I started feeling like I had to puke, I raised my hand.
“Yes Kevin?” The prof looked over at me.
“Can I be excused for a minute?” I asked shakily. “I think I’m going to puke.”
“Yes you’re good to go.” The prof said. “I wouldn’t want you puking in here.”
I nodded and got up. Too fast. I went extremely lightheaded, lost my vision, and toppled over. I collapsed to the ground, completely losing consciousness. I don’t know how long I was out for, but it was long enough for an ambulance to be called, and for me to be brought to the hospital. By the time I came to, I was in a hospital bed at the ER. Shit. Mum was going to kill me.
I sat up, and caught the attention of a nurse. She gave me a brief description of what happened, and told me I’d be able to leave soon. They just had to make sure I was ok and there was no serious reason for me to pass out like I did. I assured her that I was just sick and there wasn’t anything wrong.
I pulled out my phone and gave Daisy a text. I knew she was in school so she wouldn’t answer a call. Technically nobody was supposed to have their phone out at all, but nobody really followed that rule. Especially with texting. Me : hey, u free to talk
Daisy : wsp aren’t you supposed to be taking your exam?
Me : I kinda passed out during it
Daisy : what?? Omg are you ok???
Me : I’m ok now, just tired
Daisy : does Mum know?
Me: uh, no
Daisy : You’re gonna have to call her
Me : Ugh… ik, just dont wanna
Daisy : I would, but its better you call her
Me : alright… imma do that brb
Daisy : Good luck
I sighed, pulled up my phone app and dialed Mum’s number. My anxiety kept rising with every ring. I was hoping she wouldn’t answer. I didn’t wanna upset Mum during work hours. Unfortunately, she answered on the last ring just when I thought she wouldn’t.
“What do you want Kevin.” Mum grumbled.
“Um, I, uh, got, uh-”
“Spit it out. I’m at work. I don’t have all day.”
“I passed out at the exam and now I’m at the hospital.” I blurted out. “I need a drive home once they say I can go.”
“Oh for fuck’s sake.” Mum growled.
“You don’t have to pick me up, I can walk-”
“I’ll get you.” Mum grumbled. “I’ll be off work soon. Just wait for me to get there.”
“Thank you-”
And she hung up on me. I took a deep breath and relaxed for a couple seconds before realizing I still had my exam to deal with. I wasn’t sure what this all meant for my grade, but I didn’t think it would be good. Anxiously, I opened my email and sent a quick email to my prof asking about it. Thankfully she replied not too long after saying I would be exempt from the exam and I would simply keep the grade I had beforehand. I was so relieved to read that. It was better than failing the exam and failing the class. That allowed me to relax. Finally the first semester of school was done, and I could relax. I wouldn’t have to pull any more all nighters for a bit at least. That made me feel better.
Mum made it down to the hospital just as I was being discharged. The nurses told me I had nothing to worry about and probably just got overwhelmed. They suggested taking it easy for the next while, but other than that, I was all good to go.
“Ready to go?” Mum grumbled once I was discharged. She didn’t look happy about having to pick me up in the least.
I nodded. It was better I stayed quiet. I didn’t want to piss her off more.
“Let’s go then.”
I followed Mum out to the car and we headed home. It was a very quiet ride home. Mum didn’t seem interested as to why I passed out in the least. Daisy was waiting anxiously for me at the kitchen table when I got home. The minute she saw me come through the door she threw herself onto me and gave me a bear hug.
“Oh my god! Are you ok??” She asked. “Are you feeling better at all?”
“I’m fine.” I laughed nervously. “Just tired, that’s all.”
“You need to get your butt to bed and rest!” Daisy started pushing me down the hallway to my room. “C’mon!”
“Daisy! I’m fine! Really!”
“Which is why you ended up in the hospital? Yea right.”
She forced me into bed and made me tell her about everything. She wanted every detail. Once she heard the whole story, she lectured me on taking care of myself, and how I needed to really take it easy for the next couple days. I wasn’t going to argue with her about that. I wanted to just sleep through the next week. I was exhausted, and was still trying to fight off the flu. Heck, I could’ve probably slept right up until second semester started.
