He tilts his head to the side, making him seem like a cute child asking a superhero to take off his mask.
“My name is–” I try to say my name from the other world but as if my body physically rejects that identity, I couldn’t say it. “For now, I’m Mia but I was someone else in a different world before.”
“Different world huh? How did you get here?”
“I don’t know how I got here. I just remember being on the verge of death in my world and the next moment I woke up as Mia.”
“When did this happen?”
“About 3 weeks ago, when Mia was suffering from her sickness.”
“Was that when she was suddenly healed?”
“Yes, I don’t know how but it seems after I took over her body, the sickness disappeared.”
“It was a rather strange illness, it left as suddenly as it came.” He said thoughtfully, not worried too much about it.
“Although I don’t know much about certain things, I have my suspicions about why I had taken over her body–”
“That doesn’t concern me, it seems you don’t know how it happened so I guess you either don’t know how to willingly take possession of others or that you aren’t capable of doing it.”
“I don’t know how to do that and I’d definitely have taken control of you if I could.”
“Good point.” He looks at me with a smile, this one seeming more genuine than the others he’s given.
“Anything else?” I say, ready for my turn. He looks up thoughtfully and smiles back at me.
“I guess not.” He says, laidback.
“You’re not gonna ask about Mia?” I say this and he tilts his head to the side with confusion.
“What about her?”
“Are you not even worried about what happened to her in the slightest? I just told you I took over your sister’s body, you’re not even gonna ask about her?”
“We were siblings in name only. I couldn’t care less about her.” A slight pain throbbed in my chest.
“How could you say that… I know you weren’t close but,” I remember her pain from when she was sick. “The fact that my soul entered her body without a problem and I haven’t had any sense of another soul in this body, it could very well be that she died that day from her sickness. I think I could only possess her body because it was empty of a soul. Does that not bother you?” I asked this, hoping for some emotion from Ciel, any love for his potentially dead sister, and remorse, but the blank face he had on made me lose all hope.
“If she’s dead, she’s dead.” He said matter of factly. “I like this Mia better anyways.” He smiles ever so sweetly but the horror of his words lingered on me like the scent of a demon.
“Why…” I whispered this at him, scared of his response.
“Because you're not boring.” He says, smiling with bright eyes, cheerfully giggling like he had spilled a secret. Reality hit me hard as I remember the true nature of Ciel and the other guys in the family. I forgot for a second but these guys are cold-blooded murderers, they’ve all killed someone before so death seems trivial to them. So what if Mia was a part of their family, she was insignificant. And to Ciel, as long as you entertained him, you would be more significant than Mia.
“You bastard..” Ciel was a bit taken aback. “I really don’t like you.”
“Hehe, and that makes you all the more charming!”
“You know everything now so just tell me what you want from me.” I say, losing patience.
“I want you to make me your partner in crime!”
“What?”
“Whatever your planning on doing, I want to be a part of it. Let me help you.”
“No.” His smile faltered.
“You didn’t even consider it.”
“I did. I don’t trust you or like you, so why should I make you my partner in crime? And that aside, how are you so sure I’m even up to something, I’m not doing anything.”
“In case you misunderstood, I wasn’t asking. I’m telling you to include me or else you won’t be able to do it at all.”
“Get off your high horse Ciel, you’re not gonna find anything enjoyable about my plan.”
“Enlighten me.”
“Fine. You can join me. But I’m not going to tell you my plan.”
“How’s that going to work out?”
“I won’t tell you the plan right now. Later, after I get some things sorted out.”
“What things?”
“Things. For now, just toss me that book of toads, I want to read that mystical tome over there.” I pointed at the book on the podium. "How do you all even read books in here?" I arch my head upwards. "I don't see a 10 foot ladder anywhere nearby."
"Typically, normal people wouldn't be able to come in here." He said, looking up along with me.
"So? You couldn't bother to make ladders?"
"It wasn't necessary when the people who did come could do this." He smirks, raising his hand, a small blob of light flowed around it. He points his open palm at a book, the light shooting outwards, enveloping the book and like a yoyo, bringing it against his palm.
"Right. Magic." I say, a bit impressed but irritated at the same time.
"Exactly. But why do you want to read that book anyways? It doesn't even open." He said nonchalantly.
What he said piqued my interest. "What do you mean?"
"I meant what I said. That book has been here for a long time but from what I know, no one has been able to open it. It's sealed by strong protective magic and not even Father knows how to break the seals. It's quite famous actually, it's said to be a spellbook containing long lost magic from the Age of Henotes."
"Henotes..." I think back to a history book I read a couple weeks ago. "You mean, the era when humans and other species lived in harmony..."
"You know about it," He said, a bit surprised, "I shouldn't be surprised, although you say you come from another world, you seem to know a lot about this one, but yes. The Age of Henotes is when humans and other species, like the elves, dwarves, and spirits all lived together in peace. It was a time we only know about in legends and myths now. It was said to be a time of prosperity and light, so the few relics from that time are priceless in its knowledge and secrets."
"And you say this tome could be one of those relics."
"No one knows for sure, but the magic on it," he glances curiously at the book, radiating a faint blue light, "wouldn't you say it's proof enough?"
I mull over thoughtfully at his statement and stack up the two books he was holding onto the floor next to the podium. I stand on them and take a closer look at the book.
It was big. My small hand could barely curl over the thick edge of the front cover. The blue light coming from the sapphire hummed softly as I grazed my hand across it. I could feel a slight tug pulling my hand against it, like the jewel was magnetic. I would assume this is what magic feels life. An otherworldly sense, one that tingled my skin like electricity. I tried to open it, despite what Ciel said, and as expected, it wouldn't budge. Well I guess you're a mystery to be solved later. I stepped down from the books and decided to call it a day. I'll bring a step ladder next time to browse some more, but for now, I'm tired from dealing with Ciel. I turned to walk to my chambers.
"You're leaving?"
"I'm tired."
"But it's only noon, let's hang out some more." He whined, pouting slightly.
I turned to look at his puppy dog face, eyes glinting like emeralds. "No way in hell." I turned around on my heel and walked off. "I'll call for you when I need you, until then, act like a brat like you normally do."
