A month later, Darren planned for weeks to figure out how to get the amulet. He was desperate to help his uncle, Raishin in stopping his evil, deadbeat father. However, between his job, the band, and things going on with Chantel, it was hard to find time to search for it. Looking through the closet in his room, Darren threw tons of clothes and boxes of junk onto the floor. He rampaged through every bag and box, just to not find the amulet! Stopping to take a break, Darren huffed in frustration. He sat in his chair, near his computer desk, looking at his messy room. It was like a tornado hit it, but he was the tornado. Grabbing and opening another box, Darren started taking out things, placing them on the desk.
“Darren?!” A voice broke his concentration, and he saw Jesse standing by his bedroom’s door and waving at him.
“Jesse? Wait… Who let you in?” Darren stopped with whatever he was doing to greet his friend.
Jesse avoided stepping on things carefully and moved to where he was sitting. Daren wished he could use his magic to move things around, but he will have to make do with assisting his friend. Moving some junk, he made a path for Jesse to walk inside his room easily.
“Your aunt let me in. Doing some cleaning, man?” Jesse asked Darren.
Darren took another box and ran his hands to see if he could find that amulet. Two problems: Jesse getting suspicious and his aunt, Michelle finding out about his search. He played it safe and spoke to Jesse, “Yeah, I’m cleaning. Trying to find something…”
“I can come back another time… Oh, wait! I wanted to talk to you about Chantel. Don’t you think she is acting kind of strange?” Jesse leaned against the wall and crossed his arms.
“Chantel is always strange, Jesse.” Darren rolled his eyes at his friend’s concern.
“I mean. It's kind of strange, like she is hiding something. Look, I get she is sick, but something is up. You guys have been acting odd, ever since we went to Rockwick.”
“You worry too much. Chantel is fine. She just needed a break from the band. I think she is finally doing something about her sickness.” Darren opened a drawer of his computer desk and looked to see if the amulet was there.
Nothing there.
“I’m glad Chantel is doing something about it, but I’m worried about you too. You seem on... edge?” Opening another drawer to continue his search, Darren continued listening to Jesse.
“There is nothing for you to worry about. Stop being such a worrywart!” Darren grabbed papers from the drawer and started throwing them to the floor.
“Hey! I found this weird-looking key….” Jesse’s voice caught Darren’s attention as he stopped what he was doing.
There! He saw Jesse holding a key, but it is not a normal key. It was a golden key with a bronze gem in the middle at the end. That’s when he remembered something!
“That’s it! Jesse, I need that. I remember this key will help me find what I am looking for!” Darren tried to take the key from him, but Jesse held him back and raised it up in the air from Darren’s reach.
It was one of Jesse’s jokes, where he would hold something that Darren and Chantel wanted in the air and dangle it from their reach. Jesse is the tallest out of both of them. It was this joke that pissed them off every time he did it.
“Jeez, Darren. Where are your manners?” Jesse threw the key back and forth, to one hand into the other, while keeping his hands in the air.
Darren kept on jumping to get the key as his friend joked around with it. “I’m serious, man! I need that key. Stop being a clown and give it to me!”
“What’s the magic word?” Jesse said.
Darren stopped jumping then grumbled, “Please, give me the key, Jesse.”
Giving an impatient Darren the key, he thanked Jesse. With the key in his possession, it was time to figure out how to shoo Jesse out of the room. Suddenly, he heard Jesse screaming, then he looked over to where Jesse was at. He saw a notebook, placed on the ground, next to Jesse. The notebook opened itself up as a pen floated right next to it, Darren’s bedroom door shut itself, lights were flickering, and objects were floating in the air!
Darren glanced at the floating pen, writing a message on a piece of paper. When it finished writing, the lights stopped flicking, and the objects dropped on the ground with a loud thud. Darren found Jesse, cowering on Darren’s bed throughout the whole thing. Walking up to the notebook, Darren picked it up to read the message:
You’re in danger! Don't. Trust. Them.
What did this mean? Don’t trust who?
Darren's thoughts ran in his head, since it was not the first time he had dealt with paranormal nonsense. Whatever this ghost is doing, it was trying to warn him about something. Closing the notebook, Darren then went over to Jesse, who was still shaking in fear on his bed.
“Jess, it’s over. I think it stopped.” Going over to the bed, he petted Jesse’s back to let him know that it was over.
Jesse’s head bolted up and looked around Darren’s room. “Okay, this was freaky. Is that a ghost?!” Jesse exclaimed.
“It was some Halloween prank from my brother. You know how he always liked to play tricks on you.” Darren spoke up to cover that paranormal event to ease Jesse’s nerves.
He will have to figure out why this event happened in the first place later.
“Your brother… That guy. Why is he always such a jerk?” Jesse got off of Darren’s bed and dusted himself off. “I’m out of here. You tell Chantel that I’ll talk to her when she gets better. I got a shift to cover at my family’s restaurant.” Once again, he walked over Darren’s dropped stuff on the floor, heading to the door.
Waving goodbye to him, Darren watched Jesse opened the door, leaving the room. Darren took a deep breath in relief, then went through one of his boxes to see a small little, brown box with a lock. Taking out the key, he used the key to unlock the box, and it opened. Darren looked inside the box to see a circular, bronze amulet with a blue jewel in the middle. This amulet had his father’s family name written on the back: “Kestrel”. It also had a brown necklace, making it easier to carry.
Darren put the amulet around his neck and looked at himself in the mirror. This is it! He is going to stop his evil father from his madness. He can finally do something right! No magic needed!
His moment of triumph was brief when he heard knocking on the door. Hiding the amulet under his shirt quickly, his aunt, Michelle, came into his room. Darren closed the box, put it in his closet, and started cleaning up his room.
“Darren? Why did you mess up your room?” Aunt Michelle asked.
Darren picked up a lot of the stuff off the floor and put them back where he found them, “I needed to find something that I needed for my band. I guess I overdid it.”
“Oh, Darren. I have just been worried about you. I know your brother and sister get on your nerves…” His aunt touched his shoulder, but he waved his hand, signaling her not to worry.
“Aunt Michelle. Don’t worry about me. I don’t care about that.” Darren replied.
“Are you sure?” Aunt Michelle said.
“I’m positive.” Darren holds her shaking hand to calm her worries.
Even though, his aunt may be on his evil father’s side. Aunt Michelle is his aunt, the woman who helped raise him. Darren could not tell her about his plans, taking the amulet and giving it to his heroic, long-lost uncle, Raishin. He had to stop his evil father somehow, even if it meant going against the woman, who has been his mother figure since he was born. This mission was too important for him to fail.
