He lined up the paper with the gaps in the box and when he read it he was left dumbfounded. It said
"
Cloak Yourself
"
He laughed. It was clear now. He could turn invisible with the ring.
"I will never use this ring," Daniel said this seriously for many reasons including:
If someone found out about this he would probably be kidnapped or attacked by the government which also meant putting his relatives and acquaintances in danger; He was also reluctant to use it due to what happened the first time and that he didn't know the true extent of its power. He also wondered what the chain was for but didn't investigate anymore about it today. He stood up and looked at the clock, the time was 7 am. He had been working on the ring for 15 hours. His body felt heavy and his vision was blurry. He sluggishly flopped himself onto his bed where he swiftly fell asleep.
Many hours later he woke up with his stomach roaring and a cramp in his arm. He struggled and got himself off his bed. "Morning sleepyhead," his mum joked, she was cooking pancakes for breakfast.
"Morning mum," he said as he sat down.
"Here you go," she pulled out a tower of pancakes with syrup drizzling all over them.
"Thanks, mum you're the best," he said gleefully before devouring the pancakes.
He finished the rest of his food and readied himself for school.
"Have fun at school" his mum said with a bright smile.
"I will" he laughed whilst lying through his teeth knowing he was just going to get beaten up once more. He was about to leave when he remembered the ring. He hurried to his room and let out a sigh of relief. It was still there. "Better keep this on my person," he thought to himself, after all, it had the power to make you invisible. He left the house and thought about what would happen if someone else had gotten it. Someone wicked. Only then he realised the true magnitude of this situation. He had a ring. A ring that can make people invisible, a weapon of mass destruction. It would be better if it were gone. That's what he thought, but he was only 16. He couldn't possibly afford the means to melt the ring or destroy it in some other way, even then there is no guarantee that it would be destroyed, after all, it is beyond the scope of science. If he threw it away someone could get their hands on it. It wouldn't be safe. He was the best person to hold the ring. He could trust himself and he would not use it for destructive or selfish reasons.
Dan arrived at his school, he was looking forward to today not only because it was a Friday, but also the pleasant gust that had brushed him on the way to school. He saw his friend Austin. Austin is short has curly black hair and has brown eyes. He doesn't stick out as much as Daniel and yet they are pretty much both the same, they have similar hobbies, food likes and dislikes and they always competed for the best grade, It was a friendly rivalry but it brought purpose to Daniel's life.
Daniel went to sit down on a bench with a hand in his pocket making sure the ring was safe. He was thinking about telling Austin about the ring, he still hadn't told his mother. Yet, he wanted to tell Austin but knew that would make it more dangerous and would mean more people knew about the ring.
"DAANIEEEEL" Austin called out while running over to him cheerfully.
"'Sup" Daniel replied smiling.
"Wanna - play - chess?" Austin, he finally caught up now and was out of breath.
"Nah" Daniel decided he wasn't in the mood for much and he was mostly thinking about the ring.
"What's that in your pocket," Austin asked inquiringly pointing to his ring.
"Oh, n-nothing" Daniel stuttered he still wasn't sure about telling him about the ring.
"Fine if you don't wanna tell me it's fine" Austin replied, he didn't care too much anyway.
RRRRRRRINGG
The bell rang and it was time for class, they walked there together discussing a show they were both watching. Dan opened the door to class and sat down in his chair at the back of the class, in front of him was Austin and next to him there was nobody. The classes flew by as if they were a dream. Before long it was lunchtime. They both got curry with spicy chicken and sat at the furthermost table from the rest of their class.
"Hey, Austin," Daniel said whilst playing with the rice with his fork.
"Mmm-Yeah" Austin said.
"What do you think about Superpowers?" Daniel questioned bluntly.
"What do I think about superpowers" he repeated "Hmm- I mean they're entertaining and I like them but unfortunately they don't exist"
Daniel agreed with what he said, or he used to until the ring "If you had the power of Invisibility" Daniel stabbed the chicken with his fork "Would you use it and how?"
Austin stared and thought for a moment. "I would," he said calmly "Stop crimes, save lives help people in need" After a pause, he added "Although it would probably be different if I could turn invisible, I would do the things I just said but I would also do some selfish things like stealing some things and getting back at some people"
"Cool" replied Daniel.
Daniel thought about using the ring and of using it just a bit for the greater good as Austin said. He thought about potential dangers such as the government taking the ring, in order to combat anything happening he was planning on only wearing it when nobody is nearby and there are no cameras nearby. He thought thoroughly about this but the answer he always came back to was that it would help more people so not doing it would make him evil.
"Oh and by the way do you know where Aria is" Dan was wondering.
"No idea" Austin replied.
"Well, well if it isn't the teacher's pet and his puppet" Terrence insulted approaching their table.
Terrence has brown hair pushed back with gel and brown eyes. He is 17 since he got held back a year and smokes occasionally. He plays football and has a strong physique. His grades mediocre and passed last year's exam by the skin of his teeth.
Daniel and Austin ignored him and sat quietly like meek mice. Daniel's expression changed from cheerful and ecstatic to a ghost, his face sunk.
"Hey! Do my Maths Homework" he demanded frustrated that he was being ignored by them as he slapped down a pack of worksheets.
"Ok," Daniel said meekly, grabbing the sheets. He didn't want Austin to be part of the conflict so he just quietly agreed and was going to get out of this situation later without Austin.
"Hmph" Terrence left with his hands in his pockets nonchalantly.
None of them said a word to each other for the rest of the day other than when leaving school when they said bye to each other. When the quarrel was over he was thinking how would the situation have been if he had used the ring. When he got home, he found his mum laying on the sofa sleeping, it was clear she had worked hard while he was gone.
When Dan went to his room he sat down on his chair and took out the ring. It was the same as the first time he saw it. Silver ring with platinum streaks on it. It shined like a star.
A couple of hours later he finished his homework for the week including Terrence's and his mum woke up. He had a desire to put on the ring. After all, he only thought that its power was invisibility, he hadn't even tried it properly yet. It would just be a few seconds. He stared at the ring's scratches and how immaculate it was.
He lifted his quivering hand to the ring and grasped it. He slid it across his ring finger carefully, he pushed it until it couldn't move anymore. When suddenly...
