No matter how broken or sad they all were about Dom's death, they knew they had to go on.
Kay managed to pull himself together relatively quickly. After all, he had known loss before, and how to survive it, but it was different for Gala. She wasn't able to pull herself back together. She was broken and couldn't quite put the pieces back together.
They tried to give her some time and space, but they all knew that standing there was very dangerous, the zombies might come back any moment, they had to go on.
Ali tried to talk with Gala, but she just screamed at her and started crying even louder. So Kay decided that maybe he would have better luck in snapping her out of her sorrow daze since he knew what she was going through, he had gone through far worse.
"I know that it will sound like a cliche but I know what you are going through," Kay said.
"Really!? Did you have the person that you cared the most die right in front of you?!" she screamed at the top of her lungs.
"As a matter of fact, yes, I have, and not only one. I was there, watching helplessly as my wife turned and slaughtered our children. There was nothing I could have done, there was no way in. All that I could do was watch in horror and scream with agony.
"I yelled until I lost my voice, but inside I was screaming even after that," he responded.
"I am sorry, I didn't know," Gala said feeling extremely guilty.
"It's okay. I don't like talking about it, but I want you to realize that I do actually know exactly how you feel. I have felt that way and worse, but I survived and you have to do that as well." Kay said.
Although she was angry and sadder than she had ever been in her whole life, Gala couldn't help but feel sorry for what Kay had to go through. He lost the woman he loved and his children, and not only that, but he had to watch his wife devour the children they adored.
Even though Dom was dead, there was some comfort for her in the fact that he chose the way he would die. He didn't want to become a thing that hungers for human flesh, and he didn't want his friends to be forced to carry the burden of having to kill him.
It was in a way easier for her because his death had some dignity in it. It was his choice when and where he would die, and they had the chance to say goodbye, which was much more than Kay had with his family.
Gala started feeling guilty for acting so irrationally. It was clear that it wasn't all about her and the pain she felt. There were many people there and by refusing to move she was putting all of them in danger.
"I can't tell you that the pain will go away or that it will be better with time, it won't. However, you will learn how to live again. Some people might try to diminish what you are feeling by rationalizing what you two had. By saying that you couldn't possibly love someone so much only after knowing them for one day. I know that you can.
"I know that you feel strongly for Dom, you know that as well, and it is all that matters. Your pain will become bearable with time and you will learn how to rise above it.
"He meant a lot to me, too, but he wouldn't want us to stay here like sitting ducks, would he? I wish I could give you all the time in the world to grieve, but I am afraid that time is something we don't have. So get up and let's go!" Kay said.
Seeing reason behind his words, Gala got up, and they finally moved on from the gruesome place covered in human bodies, blood, and gore.
The rest of the way was clear, and they arrived at the base without any further problems.
The base itself wasn't anything special but it was well defended and there were many rules that helped protect its inhabitants. There weren't many people there, but they seemed to be well-adjusted to the post-apocalyptic life.
Although Gala and Ali weren't really used to the hard life, they adjusted to the new lifestyle fairly quickly.
After a few weeks, they started feeling like they had been there since the beginning.
Gala was still very sad and moody, but she tried to keep herself as busy as possible and that helped. It stopped her from thinking about Dom too much, and about life, they could have had.
As for Ali, she started spending more time around Kay who seemed to need the company more than anything else. They became close friends, and they supported each other through all the difficulties and doubts, which was something Ali had never had before.
Everything was different in the world of zombies. All the emotions were intensified and life was lived like there was no tomorrow because there was always a strong chance that they would die.
After a few peaceful weeks, they became less cautious than they should have been and that was when all hell broke loose.
It was just another regular day, in which everyone did their chores as well as they could, and no one expected the day to become the worst day of their lives and, for some of them, their last.
It was a beautiful sunny day, that made people feel happier and more relaxed and maybe that was the reason why they didn't see the enormous horde of zombies heading towards their base sooner.
They were in search of food and their base was a perfect target since there were so many humans in one place.
Although the base was well defended, it was not ready to sustain the attack of a horde of zombies.
Around noon, there was a loud scream from the watchtowers.
"Zombies! A huge horde of zombies! Get the weapons all of you! Women and children as well! Oh, God help us there are too many of them!" the guard screamed.
Gala, Kay, and Ali were among the first ones to get ready, and they looked over the fence only to be faced with the knowledge that chances of them surviving the attack were slim to none. They were good fighters, well most of them, but there were so many zombies, they couldn't see the end of the oncoming horde.
The screaming started a few moments later. There were humans screaming when bitten, zombies growling and snapping their teeth, it was a mess.
Blood was splattering all around and no one was sure if it was human or zombie blood coating the grass beneath their feet. The air smelt of blood and sweat with the undertone of fear and decay.
It was a feeling that Gala and Ali had never experienced before. They didn't know what true fear was until they were faced with the battle of their lives, battle for their lives.
The three of them tried to stay close together but that was difficult to do since there were more zombies pouring in every few second.
For the few zombies, they killed, a lot more came and took their place. It was difficult to move and defend oneself.
In the few peaceful weeks, they had, Ali became very good with a machete but even that didn't seem to be enough. As she cut off one zombies head and it rolled down into the distance there was another one grabbing at her.
Even after she cut off its hand, it stayed attached to her t-shirt and there was dark red blood dripping all over her clothes.
Even though the humans tried to help each other out, there were many humans down on the ground being slowly devoured by the starved zombies.
What caught Ali's attention was a zombie poking out a human's eyeball and slurping it up like it was the most delicious spaghetti. It made her feel sick, but it also gave her strength to keep on fighting since she didn't want to end up like that.
"Will this fight never end?" Ali thought as she kept slashing and tearing through the zombies that kept streaming in.
