As they were walking towards their base, Dominic didn't feel any different from the way he felt before being bitten. Well, he did feel different but it had nothing to do with being bitten.
He felt happy that he got at least some time to share with Gala. It was strange to feel so happy and so frightened at the same time. He felt great for having had a chance to find love, in the world where love seemed impossible, but he was also terrified of hurting Gala.
Usually, people in love were afraid of hurting the feelings of the person they loved, but it was different for him. He knew that he would break her heart when he turned, he just hoped that he wouldn't hurt her physically as well.
When she told everyone he was coming with them, he couldn't stop her. It was clear that he should have protested, but he just couldn't. It was the most selfish thing he had ever done, but he was hoping that he was right in assuming that he would feel the change happening.
Once that happened, he would get himself out of the picture before anyone had the opportunity to help him out because he knew how painful it would be for them.
Also, he was afraid that they might not be able to put him down and that would, in turn, lead to them getting hurt or dying because of him.
His mind was made, but he didn't tell Gala as he held on to her and the love he felt for her.
As for Gala, she seemed determined to make good use of the time they had left. She kept holding him closer than it was smart, and from time to time she would halt both of them just to be able to kiss him.
It was like she was a completely different person from the one that entered the city of Slim, the place where it all started for her.
Usually, she was not that emotional or open about her feelings but there was something about the certainty that the other person was going to die that made her want to live to the fullest, with him.
It would probably sound strange to anyone else, but for her, it felt right. In a short time, she had developed such strong emotions although it was trained into her that it wasn't rational or possible to fall in love quickly, but once she understood that their time together was running out she just let go.
She let go of all the things which society told her were right, and she didn't care if she would be judged for it. Listening to her heart was the only thing she was capable of doing and as far as she was concerned that was completely fine.
Feeling more alive ever before and knowing that it would all be gone, that he would be gone made her feel such strong emotions that she barely had the strength to deal with them. Nevertheless, she did so, and she kept on going and loving.
As long as he was by her side, she knew everything would be perfect and when he was gone... well she had no idea what she would do then.
When they went down the next road, what waited for them there made them sick to their stomachs. The road led to an overpass and on that overpass, there were a lot of half-eaten dead bodies.
"This wasn't here when we passed the last time." Kay said, worry coloring his voice.
"I hope the others are okay. None of the bodies look familiar, but I am not sure I would be able to tell even if it were some of them, they are so badly damaged." Kay went on.
Ali was frozen in shock. No matter how many awful things she had seen since the moment she stepped into the strange world that was Dominic's and Kay's reality, she wasn't prepared for what awaited her on the overpass.
There were body parts everywhere that seemed to have been chewed off and mostly eaten. There were corpses with their skulls broken and the brains poking out.
The most nauseating thing for her was the fact that in some brain mass that was visible in the broken skulls, she could see teeth marks from the zombies biting into the soft tissue.
She couldn't explain why that was somehow worse for her, but it was. There was blood everywhere, it seemed to Ali like there were pools and pools of the red liquid all around the bodies.
There were eyes hanging out of their socket as if the zombies tried to pull them out but failed. Also, there were many horribly mutilated faces that Ali couldn't help but think that faces were the zombies' favorite parts to eat.
Surprisingly there weren't any zombies around. It seemed as if something had interrupted their gruesome meal and effectively scared them off.
While they were all in different levels of shock, there was one person present who didn't share their disgust, Dominic.
All of a sudden he could feel an enormous craving for the brains that were splattered all over the overpass. He was still himself, but he could feel the change coming.
Sad as he was to not have more time to be with Gala, he knew he had to react immediately because they actually didn't know how long the turning process lasted.
Most of the people who were bitten begged for their family and friends to kill them while they were still human, to save their souls. Others who didn't believe in the existence of souls just didn't want to be the things roaming the earth and hurting others.
So, no one had actually gone through the whole process for them to be able to know how exactly it went.
Quickly, he stepped away from Gala and headed for the overpass's railing.
"What are you doing?!" Gala was quick to follow.
"Stay away from me, my precious Spitfire! It is happening! I am starting to turn!" he said.
Not paying any attention to his warnings, and knowing fully well that she was taking a huge risk, Gala approached him and to both of their surprises kissed him one last time, hoping to convey all the amazing emotions he had made her feel.
The man whom she didn't even know for a full day, had made her feel more than she ever felt before. Knowing full well how strange that all was, she couldn't help but say: "I love you, you know."
"I love you, too. That is why I have to do this. Tell Kay I am sorry and that he was the best friend anyone could have asked for. As for you, promise me that you will live and enjoy life as much as you can, no matter the circumstance." Dominic said.
"I promise," was the only thing she could reply while the tears streamed down her face.
Before the others had a chance to notice anything strange, Dom decided it was time to go.
