February Tuesday 11th. The only thing Ra wanted to do in Japan was Universal Studios, thus our side trip to Osaka. We caught the train there (and can I mention that Japan’s Rail is the best in the world, hands down) and walked with everyone else to the entrance.
We had been to Universal Studios in the USA in 2012 and Ra was looking forward to it in Japan. I thought it would be busy when we arrived but it turns out it wasn't. Our wait for rides is no more than 10 minutes and we do several including Spiderman and Harry Potter twice. No wait for food and the shops are empty and we get our souvenirs without waiting.
At this point I’m wondering if the virus is beginning to impact Japan or perhaps we got lucky. Regardless, it was by far the best day I had. Me and my girl being kids. (I should have mentioned Ra is 19 and a big kid). We had so much fun and when we arrived back at our room it was another early night. Every night had become an early night.
February Wednesday 12th, we took the Shinkansen to Hiroshima. It rained all day and we visited the Peace Museum. I cried - it was so heartbreaking because the museum tells the stories of those lives destroyed in the bombing and the images tore at my heart.
February Thursday 13th we visited Osaka Castle. By now my feet and knees are screaming for me to stop walking. Again the crowds are down because Ra has been to Japan twice before and she’s been to the Castle and it was busier back when she visited. I again wonder if the virus is beginning to impact peoples choices or if we are again just lucky. I liked to think we were just lucky.
February Friday 14th - Valentines Day. I’m in Japan and hubby is in Australia. No chocolates from each other this time. We catch the train back to Tokyo to stay with friends. I’m now aware of the virus and with our friends we have several conversations about this during our stay.
Now, while I’m reliving my wonderful holiday in Japan WHO are now beginning to report on world wide cases and the ‘lack of urgency in funding the response from the international community’. I’m keeping up to date with the news and now I’m beginning to become slightly concerned. Although there is no talk of closing borders or stopping flights at this stage, I’m concerned about my flight home and thinking if I’m going to get this virus its going to be on the plane home.
