In middle school things got better, and worse. A lot of voices were the same, and some were new,
“ Hey, who's the girl with the blank face?” a girl asked
“ oh, Cecilia. She's blind, and totally lame.
They giggled as Cecilia walked by, her bestie by her side. The girls continued to mock Cecilia, and hope.
“ you know, those two have been together for ages, I’d be no surprise if they were gay for each other.” something struck in hope, and on our first day of middle school we got to meet our principal, one on one.
“ So tell me, what were you thinking? On the first day of school, is that really how you want to be perceived to your teachers, and peers.”
“ no! It isn’t what i looked like-”
“ so, you didn’t try to shove a student out of a window?” hope stood up, and tried to explain.
“ Listen, they were bullying Cecil! They’ve been doing it since kindergarten, and no matter how many times we go to the teacher she still gets beat up! Starting now, I want to protect Cecil from all the bullies who try to put her down. If you think that’s wrong then you sir are part of the problem.”
Hope left hole in that office that day, and it took the next two months to fill it in. Just as Hope had told the principal, she let it be known to the rest of the school. From then on we were known as hope, and Cecilia! the freak show on tour. I found that I liked it that way. I can’t read a room, but I can feel the atmosphere, and it felt great. we were old, and everything was changing non stop, and the teachers wouldn’t let us forget that. From school dances, to just sitting boy-girl. We had to find room for the things we’d take to high school, and the things we’d leave behind as a sign of maturity. I didn’t have my life planned out, but all i knew was Hope was all i needed to make my life experience the greatest.
