End A/N.
They were at the airport when Jenny revealed that she was thinking about visiting for Christmas.
“I don’t think I’ll be here for Christmas...” Elena said, causing Danny to quickly furrow his brows together glancing at Kai before looking down at Elena.
“I think I might be in London.” She said.
“Woah, what’s that monkey?” Danny said, trying to keep his voice calm.
“Well I don’t know,” Elena said hesitantly, “But I overheard mom and Robbie talking and that’s what it sounded like.”
Danny's jaw tensed, taking a moment to register the new information.
He nodded, “That’s why she let us have you for Thanksgiving week,” He said, placing his hand on the small of Kai's back as he said us.
A gesture he didn't even need to think about, just like everything with Kai, it happened naturally.
Kai promptly ignored the alternate reality his brain gave him at the implication of us.
Instead, he focused on calming Danny down.
He rested his own hand on Danny’s upper back, rubbing small circles of comfort with his thumb.
Danny gave him a quick thank you nod, reeling in his anger and frustration, something his daughter didn't deserve to see.
Jenny, sensing the sudden tension, asked Elena to help her check her bags.
Danny nodded his permission and they walked away, giving Danny some space to calm down.
“This is so typical.” Danny started as soon as Elena was out of earshot.
He shook his head, his heart was racing.
“And I mean just as she and I were starting to-" He said, cutting himself off with a sigh. "I bet you that’s why she’s been so nice-I- I told you Kalani. What did I tell you?"
Kai tensed his jaw.
"As soon as things start looking like they're going in a nice direction, BAM, right in my face. I can't-" Danny took a second to try to regain his breathing.
"Danny," Kai said softly, breaking away from Danny to stand in front of him.
"Christmases have always been mine and Elena's thing and now she wants to take that away too?"
"Danny," Kai tried again, trying to catch Danny's eyes.
"And I fell for it," Danny kept going, eyes bouncing everywhere. "Like an idiot! Thought we were actually starting to get along. I was even trying with Robbie! And she warmed you up too! She was just playing us K-”
“Hey c’mon,” Kai said reaching out to cup Danny’s jaw, finally catching his eyes and boring into them with his own.
Danny stared back into Kai's eyes and focused on regaining control of his breathing.
“We don't know the whole story Danno." Kai said, "And it doesn't sound like anything's set in stone."
He knew defending Cristie wouldn't accomplish much of anything so he added, "And, even then, maybe you and El can do a pre-Christmas thing. Take her to Jersey or something. I’m sure Cristie would be okay with that.”
“Yeah…” Danny nodded, his tense jaw melting away as he subconsciously rested the weight of his head on Kai's hand.
"We'll talk with her and sort everything out." Kai said.
Danny nodded into Kai's hand.
Kai was about to pull Danny into a hug when he heard Jenny's voice.
“Alrighty, all done.” She said, announcing her and Elena's approaching presence.
Kai and Danny separated.
“Oh and, El and I were saying that we should all plan a trip together!" Jenny said, "Go to Disneyworld or something.”
“Or you could do that.” Kai nodded at Danny.
“Yeah.” Danny smiled.
They were in front of the TSA line when Elena tugged on Danny’s shirt.
“We’ll be right back.” Danny announced after leaning in for Elena's whisper.
“Aunt Jen, don’t leave yet!” Elena said, making Jenny pinky promise before walking away with her dad.
"KaiKai, make sure she stays!" Elena added for good measure.
Kai nodded, placing a hand on his sister's shoulder.
"Thank you, for teaching her that. KaiKai." Kai deadpanned, hand dropping as Elena and Danny walked into a store.
He secretly actually meant it.
His heart did a little backflip every time Elena said it.
"Well, Danny's got Danno," Jenny shrugged, "You needed something too."
"Why does she call you Aunt Jen?" He asked. "She doesn't she call me uncle."
Jenny scoffed at him. "Seriously?"
He nodded.
“She calls Danny, Danno.” She said, waiting for Kai to get it.
He didn’t.
“She sees me as an Aunt.” Jenny said widening her eyes, nodding once more.
Kai started nodding along, blank-faced as he crossed his arms, waiting for Jenny to explain it.
“Because….” Jenny said, waiting for Kai to finish her sentence.
He kept staring at her.
"She sees you as…”
Kai waited for her to finish.
“She sees you as a dad Kai." Jenny finally finished for him.
“No, she doesn’t.” Kai scoffed. “She sees me as her dad’s cool best friend. It’s not like she’s calling me Step-Kai.”
“Well, I mean," Jenny shrugged, "She doesn't always call Robbie that either. And she doesn't always call Danny dad either..."
"But..." Kai trailed off, looking like he was trying to mentally solve a very hard math problem.
Jenny sighed, rolling her eyes. "And hey," She added, "Don't try to take the aunt title away from me. I've always wanted to be an aunt."
"Really?" Kai said, pulled from his thoughts.
"Yeah," She shrugged, "I just always thought I'd be a really good aunt... Someone who could spoil the kid, listen to their secrets, give em advice, help em when you were being your stubborn self."
Kai looked at her, processing the new information.
"Say what you want about you and Danny but, Elena...I-"
"You're a great aunt." Kai said.
Jenny stopped, taking a second before grinning at Kai. "Wait, are you admitting that you and Danny are-"
"We're not." Kai said, waving it off, "But, you're still a great aunt. El loves you to death and you've only known each other for a week! Danny doesn't have any family on the island and... Danny and I are really happy she had you this week."
Jenny's grin was so wide it hurt her jaw.
“I want you to have this.” Elena said, handing Jenny a stuffed monkey.
Jenny's eyes widened and her face struggled to decide between an emotional pout and a big wide grin.
“And this.” Elena said, pulling out a folded picture of DannoSaur cuddled with SuperSeal and Bunno on the couch.
Jenny took it with reverence, Kai peeked over her shoulder to look at the photo.
“I know you're going to visit more often," Elena said, "But now you have something to remember us by when you’re not here. We're always with you.”
Jenny opened her mouth but only a small whimper came out.
Her throat felt tight and her eyes watery.
She was suddenly getting more emotional than she had planned to.
“Monkey.” Jenny finally said, it came out tight and strained and it invoked an emotional response from Danny and Kai who were watching with misty eyes.
She knelt down to hug Elena with all her might.
“This is the sweetest most kindest thing anyone has ever done for me ever. Thank you.” Jenny said, a tear rolling down her face.
Kai realized that he wouldn’t have been surprised if Jenny was telling the truth.
That realization upset him and he quietly vowed to be a better big brother.
Elena and Jenny held onto each other for a moment longer.
As Jenny stood, she wiped another tear from her face and pulled Danny in for a hug.
"Thank you Danny." She said as they hugged, "For everything. Everything you've done for me. Especially everything you've done for Kai."
"Oh," Danny said, "Being a nuisance to him is just a hobby of mine, no need to thank me for it."
She laughed into the hug, more tears escaping from her eyes.
“Call me if he ever gives you any trouble." She said as she pulled away, smiling at Danny. "We’ll commiserate.”
Danny grinned, “I’ll hold you to that.”
“Kai.” She said as she turned to face her brother. Her face scrunched up into another pout.
"Hey," He said, reaching out to wipe her tears away with his hand. Then pulled her in for a hug, wrapping his arms around her. "I'm happy you were here."
In a tattered voice, she said, "I'm sorry for not being-"
"Hey, don't you start," Kai said, nuzzling the top of her head with his. "Cause I've got a laundry list of things to apologize for Jen and if we start with that, you'll miss your flight."
She chuckled, into his arm, tears staining his shirt.
"We'll do better." He said, "Both of us."
