“Gerould.” She nudged Nesmir to respond. “I am here to relieve you.”
“Good lad.” Gerould’s rasping tone of voice made her wince. “See you at dawn.”
His rapid footfalls receded as Gerould ascended the stairs.
Iola waited before his footsteps were no longer audible before nudging Nesmir to move again.
In front of her lay a dank and cold corridor with rows of locked doors on one side and a wall of stone on the other.
Dim torches on sconces every few dozen paces apart cast eerie shadows all around.
Searching Nesmir’s mind she discovered the cell where Dacia was being held and nudged him to head for it.
The key hung on a ring on the wall across the cell. She had Nesmir grab the key and open the door.
The age old wooden door opened inward with a low creaking sound. Nesmir entered, holding a flickering torch before him.
Shackled to the wall, Dacia stared balefully back. Iola felt a surge of joy at the sight of the mercenary.
“Dacia!” She exulted, then immediately regretted doing so.
Nesmir dutifully expressed Iola’s joy under her thrall, making Dacia’s eyes go wide in astonishment.
“Who are you? How do you know my name?” The mercenary whispered hoarsely, rattling her chains. “If you’re looking for sport, you will soon regret...”
“No! No!” Iola urged Nesmir to respond, almost at her wits end. In no way should the mercenary come to know of what she was doing. “You mistake me...”
“What are you here for?” Dacia demanded. “Where is... um, my usual guard?”
But of course, Iola’s eyes lit up.
Kadar.
She could tell Dacia that he was held up and sent Nesmir in his place.
As she nudged her host to do so, she sensed it seemed to get easier to keep him under her control, as if she was getting better at it, and much stronger.
She could do this, she was going to get her grandfather out of here and back to the clan lands.
