“Parents?”
“Yeah… my parents got captured and then got used for bait. It was… horrible.”
Lily jumped onto the dryer that Lukas was sitting on and curled up in his lap.
I smiled, “She clearly likes you,” I said softly.
Lukas huffed with a smile, melancholic smile, “I'm glad she does.”
After we got back to the dorm, Lukas retreated into his bedroom while I remade my own bed. I looked around the small room for a bit. Along with a dresser, there was a small closet and a full body mirror. The walls were a minty green color with a window pane just next to the bed. It had a window seat, just like the one at home. I started making a mental checklist of all the things I would need to go out and buy.
“Let's see… more sheets and blankets, cushions for the window seat, maybe an extra pillow, maybe a rug… and definitely a lamp.”
After I finished, I walked around the dorm for a brief moment. There were two bathrooms. Mine connected to my room. It had a kitchen but it looked barely used.
“I'll change that,” I whispered to myself. The dorm itself had baby blue walls and a large window pane that was the far wall from the main door. It feel rather cozy. Surprisingly, the interior decorations match the scheme of the dorm. It was pleasing to look around. A soft sob pulled me from my thoughts. The walls were to thick for me to hear one of the neighbors cries. I softly knocked on Lukas's door.
“Is everything okay?”
Some scuffling could be heard from behind the door, “Y-yeah… Don't with about me.”
“Your voice tells me otherwise.”
More scuffling around sounded. The door slowly swung open a small bit, “Things could be better…”
I held out my hand, “Let's talk then. It usually helps.”
Lukas put his shaky hand in mine. His hands were rough and calloused compared to my soft hands. I slowly guided him to the couch and sat down, “Just say what's on your mind.”
“I just… miss my parents,” he whispered, “We were never able to find them. All the other agents were found except them.”
“That must have been hard, huh…”
“So much… it was so frustrating. Every lead we got ended in a dead end. I… have started losing hope about ever finding them again. I mean… everyone here gets treated like family whether someone is a new member or an older member… I just… I want to find my parents… or at least get some closure if they were killed.”
“I promise I'll help you find them in anyway I can. I'll be your partner here.”
Lukas laughed sadly and rubbed his eyes, “You know, I've had 20 partners in my time being an agent here. The amount of times I've heard that… is once. Right here.”
I pulled Lukas into a hug, not knowing what to say. It may have been impulsive to say that, but I want to help this man in any way I possibly can. Whether that's finding potential locations or working alongside him in the field. For now, I know I can just be someone he can lean on. Everything else will have to come later. The young man hugged me back tightly, burying his face into the curve of the base of my neck. I started softly humming while running his back gently. I looked up and noticed little music notes floating around the area.
“Lukas, look up,” I said gently, then continuing the song.
Lukas turned at watched the music notes dance through the air. I could feel his body start to relax as I hummed for him.
After a while of sitting like that, Lukas had calmed down and was back to his normal, cocky, self. We had decided to walk around the building, just to get moving. I glanced at him from the corner for my eyes. There was still a lot I didn't know about him, but I had a feeling that the longer I stay here, the more I'll learn. About him and everyone that I'll meet and about myself. For the first time in my life, I was surrounded by people like me. I was going to be using this ability to help people and I was excited for it. As for the training week, I was ambitious to get started. Hearing Lukas's story, I was determined to help him find his parents one way or another.
I was woken up with Lukas knocking on my door. I rolled out of bed and stretched leisurely before opening the door.
“It's your first day of training!” he cheered. I hummed softly before getting clothes shoved into my arms, “These are the trainee uniforms that we have, put one on and we'll go get food first, can't train on an empty stomach," he said with a wink. "Then I'll take you to the tech division. Today, you'll be shadowing Arthur Leavitt.”
I rubbed my eyes and nodded, “I'll meet you in the living room,” I said before closing the door. I held on to one of the uniforms and tossed the rest onto my bed, waking up Lily. I hummed apologetically and went to put on the uniform. I went to the mirror and tied my long blonde hair into a ponytail. Taking a step back, I admired the uniform. The shirt didn't have sleeves, it had two blue stripes intersecting on the left side of my chest. Where the lines intersected, there was a rose with CG embroidered into the pedals. The fabric was lightweight and breathable, perfect for being able to move easily with. I took in a deep breath and started to leave my room. I pet Lily's head as I walked out of my room, into the living room.
