We're A Team
When he came home to her leaning against the island in the kitchen, a dreadful sensation ran down his spine. It was two-thirty, not an odd time for him to come home, but she should have been asleep. Besides, he had no idea she would be staying with him tonight. She had yet to move in the last of her things and spent some nights in her apartment.
“Babe?” Worried for both of them, he set his suitcase down and approached.
He watched as anger flared in her eyes at the sight of him, but she took a deep breath in an attempt to calm down.
“You killed them didn’t you?” He froze at her question, not quite sure who on that long list she was referring to. “You took my vials, lied to me, and your idea of properly disposing of them meant killing them. Those men.” Her voice pitched at several points, but with effort, she managed to not yell.
“Yes, I used your vials to kill them.”
Before he could say more, she turned from him as tears blurred her vision and she tugged on her hair. He reached for her, but she slapped his hands away and put the island between them.
“How could you?! Those were never meant – I never…” She furiously tugged at her hair, pulling strands from her ponytail. “Those vials… You killed them using my vials! How could you do that and then lie to my face about it?!”
“I understand why you’re upset-“ His words fell on deaf ears as she kept the distance between them.
“Upset?!” She slammed her hands against the counter, cursing at the stinging in her palms, but it was just what she needed to calm down. “I made those vials. I am responsible for what they do. And I indirectly killed three people who’ve never laid a physical hand on me.”
Her voice rose, but she hadn’t become hysterical yet. When it did, she’d resort to name-calling and from there, it would be nothing but regret for the both of them.
“Responsible?!” However, he couldn’t help but get angry himself. “You lead a research team for discovering and improving bioweaponry, fully aware that I mass produce your research for the black market! And you think you just became responsible for what happens down there?! You’ve been responsible since you joined!”
He slammed his hands down on the counter, nostrils flaring as he silenced her and continued, “I don’t see anything wrong with using these vials against men we know had attempted to sabotage our relationship, not once, but twice! And who we suspect of tampering our supplies! We got rid of them and got to see what those vials did. Isn’t that what you scientists call experimenting?”
Hurt flashed in her eyes, but she bit her lip to stop the tears. He saw them, though, welling her eyes and giving them that bright shine that never stopped his heart from reaching up into his throat. Regret washed over him and his anger evaporated leaving him numb.
“Experimenting on people is ethically wrong and I will never stoop so low to cross that line in stone.” She turned from him and walked out of the kitchen.
This time, he had taken it too far. He had become the name-caller.
He waited for the sound of the front door, but to his utter relief, he listened as she walked up the steps and headed for their bedroom.
He took a moment, listening to the quiet sniffles that followed behind her, then followed her up.
She sat on the bed, her ponytail long gone and her head in her hands. At hearing the door close, she looked up with devastation across her face as if done with a permanent sharpie.
Guiltily, he stood by the door, leaning against the wall.
“I’m sorry. That was harsh and unfair. I know you know. You’re too bright not to and experimenting is immoral and I’d never expect or want you to cross that line.” For a moment, he looked like he was going to walk over and hold her, but he stopped himself short and resettled against the wall with arms crossed.
“I should have told you the truth from the beginning. We’re a team in both our professional and personal relationship. You had every right to know. I saw those vials and saw an opportunity to take care of a problem before it got even bigger. I remember how upset you were and I don’t want you to worry over this. I want you to focus on whatever makes you happy.”
She smiled at his words, wiping away a few stray tears.
“You love what you do. I want you to continue doing what you love, whatever it may be in the future. And, I know you don’t want to hurt anyone. You do this for science only.” She looked him in the eye and an emotion he couldn't decipher fell over her.
“That’s the thing. I didn’t do it for science. I made those with the intention of using them. Yes, I’m angry you lied, but I’m more angry that I made them. If I didn’t want them to be used, I should have never made them or in the least, got rid of them soon after.” She wiped a stray tear, undignifiedly clearing her throat.
He came to sit beside her, offering his hand. She took it, squeezing it before she kissed the back of his hand.
After a few minutes of silence, she spoke again, “I love what I do in the labs and can’t imagine doing anything else. It's dangerous and I know what happens when those results leave the lab. Right now, I just need time to think.”
“Alright, why don’t we take the rest of the night to think, hm? Both of us.” He kissed her cheek and left to get ready for bed.
When they settled underneath the covers, he expected her to want space, but to his delight, she snuggled against his back. One arm came around to hold him, placing itself over his heart.
A silent hush fell over them and after a few minutes, he was sure she fell asleep. Until she kissed his bare shoulder blade. It was only a peck, but it made him feel like everything would be okay. They were okay. Nothing to worry about. Nothing to fear.
She kissed his shoulder, this time lengthening the kiss only a moment longer. Steadily, she made her way up to his neck and each kiss became longer than the last. Each movement she made, be it the way her arm tightened around him, her hand clenching at his skin, desperate… Her breasts pressed firmly against his back as she squirmed to be impossibly closer to him.
He obeyed her every command. Turning over when she tugged at his shoulder. Returning every kiss and caress. Matching the rising intensity.
Feverishly, she tugged on his wrist until he moved to be on top. Her feet yanked his sweats down as he too stripped her bare.
Bare to each other, they kept body to body. Refusing the idea of space. Her legs wrapped around his weight, squeezing him to his delight as he surrendered some of his weight.
He moved from her lips to her neck, nibbling on every inch of flesh. Wanting nothing more to taste her and hear her pleasurable sighs in his ear. Her fingers scratched at his back when he took a nipple into his mouth. Back arching, she moaned at his teasing and encouraging him to give equal attention to the other.
Her fingers got caught in his hair as he descended and left a trail of goosebumps in his wake. When he touched her core, a peacefulness fell over her. Her pleasure silent. She arched her back again, digging her fingers into his scalp, but not a single sound came from her mouth as he delivered pleasurable stroke after stroke. Her eyes closed in bliss and she bit her lip.
Nothing else mattered at this moment but them. They lost themselves in each other’s touch and pleasure. A bliss they made together.
After her first of many orgasms to come, he crawled up her body, kissing her with an easy passion. No desperation filled their movements. No need to rush a damn thing. They weren’t going anywhere. So, when he slid himself deep inside her, he took his time. Enjoying the feel of her. How she held him. How good she felt.
They gave and received easy touches filled with a passion that burned slow and deep. Happy with how they exchanged their pleasure, they spent the rest of the night this way.
When morning broke, they were fast asleep and entangled in one another.
She woke snuggled into his back and cocooned with blankets. As soon as her senses came to her, she nearly shot from the bed, but his hand came around to grab onto her hip.
“I called in to let them know neither of us will be showing up to work. You have today to just think.” He returned to his side, settling back into his pillow.
“Hey,” she propped herself on her elbows to rest her chin comfortably on his arm. “What would you think if I didn’t want to work there anymore?”
She couldn’t see his face but felt him tense for only a moment before relaxing.
Without hesitation, he said, “then you can laze around the house until you find something that interests you or not. You can do whatever you want. So long as you’re happy, then I am too.”
It took as his will power and then some to not turn around and beg her not to go. To tell her how much he needed her every aspect of his life. His lover and his right-hand man. But, if continuing to work there caused them more fights like last night, he’d rather put up with someone else than have her so upset, than have them turn against one another.
“You know… I’d be completely fine with going to work today. I’ve made up my mind already.” He turned over onto his back to see her face. To see her sincerity. “You once told me you’d burn your entire empire to keep me. I’d do anything, give up all that I’ve ever known, ever had, to keep you. We are a team, just like you said. Personally and professionally. I’ll continue to deal with the science, so long as you deal with the business. You delt with a threat as you should have. I’ll never be mad at you for that.”
Turning completely onto his side, he cupped her face and kissed her.
“I know. I know you have no intentions of hurting anyone. I was in the wrong to use the vials and lie to you about it.” She shook her head, ready to protest, but he stopped her, “I know you wouldn’t have approved but I did it anyway. We should have talked about it. For that, I am sorry.”
“All’s forgiven.” She stroked his cheek. “No more lies.”
He nodded to that.
“No more lies.”
“And…” She hesitated. Licking her lips, she finally spoke again, “I didn’t feel guilty about it. I felt justified and that didn’t settle well with me. I came to terms with that.” She slowly sat up, pushing him onto his back. “They attempted to come between us. A pathetic attempt and a very wrong move on their part.” Her seriousness sent a tingle down his spine.
Her mind was her greatest weapon and it was something he trembled before.
She moved to straddle his waist. He remained silent. She wasn’t finished speaking.
“I was angry about it. Feeling justified instead of guilty. Not even an ounce of remorse. I took that out on you. I blamed you. And I apologize for it.”
He smiled up at her, shaking his head.
“All’s forgiven. From now on, no lies, no blaming. We talk about this. Just like now, we talk and we work through it.” She agreed.
He cupped her face, a deep admiration for her filling him.
“I hate to talk about work…” She kissed his palm, failing to stop a grin from forming on her face. “But, I do need a neuro-toxin…”
“Such a thing already exists, love.” Bending down, she kissed him squarely on the lips.
Her tongue swept across his bottom lip and he welcomed her in to play. Before pulling away, she gave a quick nip to his lip and savored the disgruntled look he gave her.
Her lips hovering above his own, “how much?” She teased him with a smile.
Throat suddenly parched from the look she gave him and the way she ever so slightly licked her lips, like he was her favorite dessert (he was), he hoarsely answered, “six hundred kilograms. Two days.”
She kissed him, longer and more satisfying than the last. His head buzzed.
“Anything else?” He growled as she pulled away again, whispering in his ear before playfully nipping at his ear lobe.
“No.” He could feel her wetness on his stomach and it was all he could do to not moan when she suckled a sensitive spot just below his ear.
