We were both in front of the castle and the girl began to speak
“I guess we have to start with names. Well, it’s Eria Bardot.” She stared at me for awhile waiting for me to answer with my own name. “Uh… um oh, my name’s Olivia” I said being dumbfounded and mortified at what happened in the meeting room that I struggled to say my own name.
Eria started to walk on her own and I quickly followed pursuit.
Trying to find out more about what happened to me I asked her.
“What kind of power do I have?”
“Well, we have to find out from your training.” She said as we walked away from the castle.
Curious in what her own entails job I asked her, “Then Eria what do you for your job?”
“It is my job as a magic-user to keep monsters out of the villages or towns. It’s my job to protect the people.” Eria exclaimed pridefully
After our short conversation, we entered a small town and walked towards a general store.
“Stay here. I’m going to get some supplies. I’ll be quick.” Eria entered the store leaving me behind.
Settling down on a bench across the store, I patiently waited for her. It was a nice breezy night as the crisp wind came rolling in. There were a few glowing balls of light that floated up in the air and it helped brighten up the town. The trees were almost bare from the incoming season that was about to start. I realized I would have to remind Eria where I could find a jacket.
Looking from the bench I saw some townspeople were walking around and starting their own conversations. There was an open market during the night where merchants are trying to convince their customers to buy their merchandise. There were clopping noises coming from the horses that were galloping up and down the road down. Hearing the bustling sound of the town made me relax.
I turned back to the storefront as I wait here for Eria, instead of seeing a store there was a man in front of me. He was tall, had messy black hair, and purple eyes. He was good looking but he had a sunken pale face as if his energy was drained out of him. What caught my eye the most was the semi-circle hole that was placed in his chest where his heart should be. He sat next to me on the bench.
With a burning curiosity and worry, I wondered about the semi-circle hole. “Are you alright?” I pointed to his chest.
“I really don’t know,” he said in with no emotion. I was still terribly worried about him and was disappointed at his answer.
“ It must have hurt to have a hole in your chest.”
“No, not really.”
“Well, then do you know what your gonna do about it?”
“I have no idea. I think I’m fine as it is,” he said but I was still unconvinced.
Trying to keep the conversation going I said “Well my name is Olivia. What’s your name?”
“Gideon.” he immediately replied.
“Well, what are you doing in town.”
“I don’t know. I don’t remember anything.”
Hearing that he had no idea what had happened to him, my heart pierced. There must be something I can do to help.
“I’m going to help you,” I said with a determined face
Hearing a small laugh beside me, I looked towards him I saw Gideon trying to suppress any further laughter.
“Sorry for laughing. It’s really cute for you to say but I don’t know if you can help me. I even don’t know where to start when it comes to fixing my own problem. I lost half of my heart and I don't remember what had happened to me”
“Wouldn’t it be better if you had someone who can help you? Let me help.” I kept insisting on my assistance.
Gideon gave a small smile still weary of my help.
I saw Eria coming out of the store with an ambiguous mood when she looked up at us.
“Hey Eria, I’ve met a new friend!” She took a quick glance at Gideon and gave us a contorted face.
“Olivia, we don’t know who this person is. You have to be cautious of who you befriend.” I started to panic not knowing what to do with this situation. Trying to think of ways to convince Eria to help the stranger, Gideon stood up.
“It’s alright Olivia, I will leave. I don’t want any kind of conflict.”
“What about my promise to you?” I looked back at him.
“It’s fine. I don’t want you to be dragged into my problems.” Gideon turned around and walked towards the forest. Looking at the
Gideons turned back, I was absolutely torn.
Eria would be mad at me but I knew I would regret not helping him.
“GIDEON! WAIT!” I ran towards him and grabbed his hands pulling toward a steaming Eria.
“What are you doing?” I point to Gideon’s half-empty heart.
“He needs help. Look at his heart. How can he get half of his heart back by himself when he has no memories.” with defiant finality with my words, Eria looked at me with an annoyed face. “Stop it, Olivia. We don’t know who he is and who he is affiliated with.”
With a massive disappointment that I couldn’t convince Eria, I saw Gideon slowly disappearing on his own wandering the forest by himself.
*********************
The morning after, Eria and I sat outside in an empty grassy field. I sat in front of Eria as she explained magic. “In order for us to start your training, I have to explain your powers.” I looked at Eria with shiny eyes instantly intrigued about my powers and her world. Trying to listen to her intently I scoot closer to her.
“There are two types of magic in this world: the first type of magic is derived from the big gem that you touched in the meeting room which is called soul magic. Usually, the council tries to comb through who is worthy and morally just enough to wield this kind of power. It also takes a lot of training to be granted with this kind of magic.” Eria looked at me with a little bit of contempt.
“This kind of magic takes form in a weapon,” Eria explained as she materialized her bow out of nowhere. “This is the weapon that I have been granted. Each individual that wields this kind of power has a weapon that differs from other users.” Eria finished the first half of her explanation as I wondered what kind of weapon I would be able to wield. Eria continued “The second type of magic takes form in trinkets called trinket magic.” she pointed at her keys as an example. “This key enables me to go through your world and mine, it also an example of this kind of magic.” She puts back her keys in her jacket pocket.
“This form of magic is non-attacking magic. Most people can use this type of magic because it is harmless magic. Each trinket has different types of magical abilities other than traveling from another world. Whether it is healing abilities, night vision, speeding magic, there are numerous non-offensive magical trinkets. There are many trinkets in this world yet to be discovered. The gem, in our world, is the only source of magic that gives us offensive powers.”
Eria suddenly stood up from where she sat. “So let's get started.”
“When you bring out your own power you need to imagine energy flowing through your body”
“Imagine?” I didn’t know what she meant.
“Try to pretend that there is an aura that surrounds your body.”
I try to apply Eria’s advice and it appeared for a split second until it quickly disappeared.
“That's great so far but you need to be able to concentrate a little more for your powers to last longer. Come on we need to go deeper into the forest and find monsters to practice on.” Eria headed off and I quickly followed her. As we walked further the forest became thicker with trees.
Eria and I suddenly stopped walking and stood behind one of the trees. Peering over the tree there were a couple of cobras slithered through the forest floor. But what made these creatures unusual is the fact that it was larger than any regular snake. Twice the size beyond my height, the Cobras looked threatening as if they were hungrily looking for prey.
Suddenly, Eria materialized her bow and steady her aim towards a cobra. Her arrows shot a Cobra right into its heart but the horde of cobras gave us a menacing glare.
“Come on” Eria yelled towards me as I quickly followed her. The cobras slowly glided through the grass as they came closer towards us with their domineering hiss We could see the dripping venom that came out of their fangs. Struck with intense fear, I froze in the middle of our run. Unable to understand in that short moment I should move, a serpent wrapped around my body. Constricting me from taking another move I yelled out “Eria I can’t do anything! I’m stuck!” I see Eria in her own predicament as she is surrounded by other cobras. “I’m sorry Olivia I will try to help but it would really help us a lot if you’re able to use your own magic.”
Taking out the cobras slowly, Eria had a hard time trying to save me. I closed my eyes trying to push myself out of the grips of the serpent’s long body. With no avail, the serpent tightened its grip on me.
I was easily losing faith that I would be able to get away from this situation as I could hardly breathe and concentrate on honing my own powers.
Unexpectedly, I saw from the corner of my eyes a shadow that came down towards me.
The messy dark hair and the alluring yet dull purple eyes, I recognize the semi-circle hole embedded in his chest. It was Gideon that suddenly appeared in front of me.
“Olivia!” he came rushing towards me and to my surprise he was also wielding weapons in his hands. There were two small blades in each of his hands that were slightly covered in black ooze. With his blades, he slices through the cobra that wrapped its body around me which loosened its grip. Looking back at the sliced Cobra it was failing around and was slowly disintegrating. Now going towards Eria, Gideon tried to help her fight off the hordes of serpents that had gathered around us.
In one swift motion, Gideon was able to slice through numerous snakes and Eria shot through them with her bow and arrows.
In an instant, Gideon was wrapped and then trapped by a snake. The snake slowly tightens its grip on him. Gideon was able to slip his right arm out of its grip and plunged the knife right into its head. While Eria accurately shoots through the hearts of numerous snakes.
Both of them gracefully took out the hordes of snakes that almost overpowered us. Stained by snake blood, Gideon and Eria breathed heavily as they finally took out the last snake in their splattered clothes.
Looking at them awestruck at how skilled they were, I stood there while they took out the cobras.
Eria looked at Gideon “It seems you are also a soul magic-user.”
“To be honest I didn’t even know myself”
Looking back at me Eria gave a long sigh “We will try and help recover your memories.” With a glint of excitement, I internally celebrated and gave Eria a big smile.
Eria turned towards me.
“I’m sorry for what happened today. I should have been more vigilant in taking care of you. I was responsible for what happened.” She bowed towards me with great remorse.
“You didn’t know that it was going to happen. Plus I really need to work on my magic.”
“No, I should haven’t started your training with monster hunting.”
Gideon interjected, “Maybe I can also help with your training.”
Hearing what Gideon had said I perked up. “Really!” I said with excited eyes. “It would really help.” Hoping that Gideon would help my training.
“Eria….. Eria !” We all heard a squeaky voice coming towards our way. “Are you guys alright?” Nibbles the mouse was coming towards me with a girl that resembles Eria but with fiery red hair. She was smiling towards our way.
“We’re fine,” Eria responded.
“Sorry, we were late.” The girl next to Nibbles said.
“It's alright,” Eria respond.
The girl with the bright flaming hair stood there gave us a bubbly smile.
