It was a sunny day, the streets were crowded as many a people of every size, shape, and species from across the galaxies, were out and about; running errands, enjoying a day of shopping, catching up with friends. Any excuse to get outside and take advantage of the beautiful weather. But, of course, you don’t actually give a fuck about any of that do you?
No, what you really care about is; what’s going on with that one guy running through the streets into incoming traffic and why is he being chased by that blue haired girl?
He was a short guy, humanoid, middle aged, balding, and clearly not in the best physical shape as he huffed and puffed while darting through pedestrians and attempting to avoid vehicles. But he was not about to stop now. He was running like his life depended on it. And for a matter of fact, it did.
Because hot on his trail and catching up fast was a young woman with bright blue hair who was dodging traffic and maneuvering around people like she did it for a living.
That is until she was hit by a car.
“Oh god! Oh god! I killed a person!” A horrified young man exclaimed as he hopped out of his car. “My driving instructor was right! I am a menace to society!”
“I’m okay!” the woman quickly announced as she bounced up from the pavement with a few minor scratches at most. But the small crowd of people that gathered around her weren’t entirely convinced.
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Yeah, that car hit you pretty fast!”
The woman wasn’t paying them any mind though. Instead, her attention was focused on trying to spot the guy she was after. “Gotcha!” she said as she locked eyes on her target, a block down, trying to get lost in the crowd.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.” She brushed off the concerned onlookers getting up to continue her chase. “Oh, and sorry about your car!” She shouted over her shoulder as she ran off.
“Sorry about my-” Suddenly the driver noticed the front bumper.
“What the hell!?” He shouted looking at the giant dent. “That’s gonna cost a fortune to fix! My insurance is gonna go through the roof!”
“Well, at least you didn’t kill someone?” Another person suggested.
Meanwhile, the man couldn’t believe his luck. He knew there was no way he had any chance at out running the bitch at this rate. But now, hopefully, he had the chance to put enough distance between them to lose her for good. Getting his second wind (or was it third at this point?), he was off.
Shunk
Shunk. Shunk.
He was suddenly stopped in his tracks as three knives came flying towards him, embedding in the pavement in front of his feet.
“Hey there buddy...”
Oh no, he forgot about the other one.
“Where do you think you’re going?” A male voice called out as a figure clad in all black sans a white mask landed in front of him. The knives dislodged themselves from the ground and flew back into the masked figure's hand.
The man stepped back from the new threat, observing his options. The blue haired girl was still hot on his trail behind him, and, from the looks of it, catching up fast. This new guy was right in front of him and blocking his path forward. But, to his right, there was an alleyway. Not left with many other options, that’s exactly where he went.
He rounded the corner and-
Shit!
It was a dead end.
The man looked around. What could he do? There was a fire escape, maybe he could try-
Bang!
He suddenly jumped at the crack of gunshot as the bullet whizzed by his head. He eyed the spot where it struck the wall.
Bang! Bang!
Two more gun shots followed. Also passing by him dangerously close. Warning shots.
“Give it up, there’s nowhere else for you to run.” A female voice shouted.
He turned around, hands in the air.
Holding up a pair of dual revolvers was the blue haired girl, joined by her partner who was likewise armed with a set of throwing knives.
He was cornered. Like prey.
And they were the hunters.
Bounty hunters.
“You don’t understand,” He pleaded. “I have a wife, I have kids! They need me! Who’s gonna take little Jimmy to his baseball game on Fridays? Huh?”
“Let’s see,” The masked guy began. Tapping a device in his ear he pulled up a holographic screen displaying information on their current target. “Among the many crimes Mr. Nix over here is charged with; Money laundering, tax evasion, jaywalking- jaywalking? You can get a bounty on your head for that?”
His partner could only shrug in response.
“Anyway, our buddy Mr. Nix has also been charged with, get this,” he looked up from the screen over at his partner. “Dodging child support for the last 20 years with twelve different women.”
The man stood there, mouth gaping as he tried to think of something fast. “I… uh… but who will feed my cat?” He shrugged.
The blue haired girl held out one of her guns and aimed it at directly at him. “Don’t care.”
He closed his eyes bracing himself as she fired. He hesitantly opened them to find his upper body encased in an electric blue coil. She fired again aiming at his feet. Now with his ankles tied up he toppled over.
She approached her captured quarry.
“Bag em,.” She said as she pulled out a roll of what looked like stickers. “Tag em,” she slapped a sticker onto his forehead. Then pulling out a small device the size of a pen, she shot open a portal just big enough to fit a person through. “Send them off…” She then kicked the bound up fugitive into it, the portal closing as soon as he went through. “Aaaand,” She continued, pulling up her own holo screen from her own ear piece “Look! Money~” She announced gleefully as she watched her bank account balance go up a notch.
“Seriously, that’s all we got?” The masked guy asked unimpressed. “That was barely even worth the trouble.”
“Hey, money is money,” his partner replied.
She was a young woman in her twenties, dressed in shorts, a black denim jacket over a bright blue tank top (a perfect color match to her hair and just one of the many flawlessly color coordinated items in her possession) and wore a pair of black boots ready to run, jump, or hike at a moment’s notice. Her hair fell in loose curls framing her face, a chunk of bangs brushed off to the side usually concealing one eye. The eye you could see was large and bright reflecting the attitude of someone determined not to let anything bring her down. Especially not her ever more cynical partner. ”Besides, if you ask me, I think that’s been one of our easier operations lately. And, hey! No accidents!”
“You got hit by a speeding car.” Her partner replied.
“Oh, you know it takes much more than that to hurt me.”
“I was talking about the car.”
“He said he had insurance.” She shrugged, folding her arms behind her head.
If she was bright and cheery, her partner was anything but. Clad in an all black form fitted suit, his entire body was covered from head to toe. His face was completely concealed by a bone white mask featuring two black slits for eyes with a dot above each. The only thing not covered, was his hair. Black and choppy, it stuck out framing the mask stopping just at the base of his neck.
Since the title of our story is Blue Mask, it would probably be a safe bet to guess that the girl with the bright blue hair, was Blue. And the masked partner of hers was- yep, you guessed it.
“Anyway, Mask, I’m starving. Let’s go get something to eat.”
“Got anything in mind?” Mask asked.
Before she could respond they were interrupted by a loud growl coming from Blue’s stomach. “Ugh,” She groaned, “I don’t care, just pick something.”
He thought for a moment, “I think I saw a cafe a few blocks back.”
