“We need to talk” Says Aiden Magica; the great leader of Helios and a father of a teenage girl, who just talked to herself in the mirror.
“Sure dad, what’s the problem?” she asks, as she resting her chin on her hand.
“Well, it’s nothing special. It’s just that by the next following days, you’ll be graduating from high school and got a VERY LONG break period. So…I’m thinking of sending you to a magic school.” Says her dad. Seraphina lets out a soft ‘Hmm’ and gives her dad a slow nod as she’s making a face that is saying ‘Oh yeah?’ He pauses a little, then continues speaking.
“In the past few years; you’ve been, mostly, staying at home and not at school. You don’t socialized much. You don’t have a trustworthy friend...”
“Dad, I’ve learnt so many ways to use and control my power in these three years. I don’t regret my choice.” Staying at home, practicing magic. That was actually her own idea. She knew what she’s supposed to do. A clan leader is not just a role anyone could have. Hard to get, even harder to keep. Making a whole bunch of other sorcerers respect her, is going to be a tough work.
“I know. I also know that you are now very good at using your power, in spite of your age. The day that I need to debut you to the council as my successor is coming close. You must be prepared.” People at the council of sorcerer are not very nice. Aiden is worried of how they will welcome his daughter.
“Besides, communication skills and social courtesy are also important to the leader hood. The world is big, Seph. There’re so many kinds of people out there. You need to experience them all. You need to make friends. You need to learn how to properly live your life and try not to fail. Not just as a sorcerer, but also as a person.” Sorcerers are humans, but born with a gift. A blessed power. In this world, being a sorcerer runs in blood lines. That’s how they survived up till now.
“I won’t fail. And you know it. But hey…by the way, what about university?” She asks. Young woman desired to be educated from both sides of her life. Human and Sorcerer society.
“That comes later. But I promise sending you to one, so don’t worry.” Says Aiden, ensuring his daughter.
“Cool. I’d love to make friends anyway.” She shrugs as she stands up from the computer chair.
“Is there anything in the kitchen? Pretending to be sick makes me hungry.”
“Stew” Aiden stands up and starts leading Seraphina to the kitchen.
“Ooh,” says Seraphina and whistles “Fancy.”
“Don’t whistle in the house, young lady!”
“Oh, come on! Dad.”
Several days later…
Today is her final exam day. Which means, she needs to go to school.
How am I gonna pretend to be sick today? Cosmetics? Magic? Hmm. How about…both. Hmm. Nah, cosmetics would be fine. I believe in my pretending skill. Then she puts on some powder on her face and lips to make them pale. She takes a look in a mirror. Hmm, looking ill as heck. And that’s Fantastic! Lastly, she ties her hair in to a ponytail.
Seraphina arrives at school by her luxurious family car to give people the picture of an ill rich kid. Her dad’s subordinate is here too, playing as her (fake) nurse.
“Princess, are you sure about this? Despite your health?” Says Miss Lee in a nurse uniform.
Um…princess? Seriously miss Lee? How…hardcore. But I guess that’s fine. I’m even dragging around an IV pole with a fake medicut.
“I’ll be fine Miss Lee. And please don’t call me that at school. I’m quite embarrassed.” Seraphina smiles weakly.
“Although Doctor Luis said it’s okay to go out, I’m still worried. Says the (fake) nurse.
Who in the world is Doctor Luis?
“Please, I’ll take a good care of myself” She grabs Miss Lee’s hands
“Okay princess, I give up. Please don’t take off your IV set.”
“Sure, bye” Young woman waves at her (fake) nurse weakly while walking in to the school with every on watching.
Dang. I’m so good at this.
The exam go as smoothly as she has planned. It went so well that she can expect straight ‘A’s.
“Let see, whose turn it is to clean the classroom…oh” Mister Jones, her homeroom teacher, pauses a little, then take a look at Seraphina’s face.
Oh…So it’s my turn.
“It’s Seraphina’s and Hanna’s turn.” Says Mister Jones.
“What!? Not on the last day of school.” Hanna exclaims. Mister Jones turns to talk to Seraphina, ignoring Hanna’s attitude.
“Will it be fine to clean with that condition of yours, Seraphina?” Says mister Jones as he take a glance at the IV pole.
“I think I can Mister Jones.” Then again, the weak smile.
“If you say so.” He looks worried but let her do what she wants.
Everyone has left except for Seraphina and Hanna.
“I will take care of the desk, is that Oka--” before Seraphina can finishes her sentence, Hanna throws the broom that she was holding at her.
“What are you doing, Miss Summer?” asks Seraphina, but in her head she knows immediately that…This girl wanna have a problem.
“Shut up! Maxwell.” She furiously pushing Seraphina on the shoulder many times. Seraphina staggers.
“WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!? A PRINCESS OR WHAT? WANT ATTENTION THAT MUCH? GETTING SO MUCH SPACIAL TREATMENT.WHILE YOU WERE AT HOME CHILLING, WE SUFFERED SO MUCH. BUT YOU, YOU GOT NOTHING. NOTHING AT ALL. THAT’S WHY NO ONE BEFRIENDS YOU MAXWELL!” Hanna yelled at Seraphina’s face. This girl’s harsh words means nothing to the young sorcerer, but still, plays along as a victim.
“I’m sorry…I didn’t know…I didn’t mean to. I love to come to school, but I can’t. Because of my--”
“Sickness!? Oh yeah! You are so weak that it annoys me. You vegetable! Good thing that we won’t see each other ever again.” Hanna smirks. “As for now…clean the room alone, will you? Have fun cleaning, veggies.” Then she leaves.
That dang spoiled kid. Someone should have given her a lesson.
It’s getting late and she has just finished cleaning. The sky’s getting darker and darker every minute. While she is gathering her things, she has a feeling…
…Of being watched.
Chills runs through her spine. Suddenly, it doesn’t feel safe. And then she realized, that she is here all ALONE.
I better call my dad. As Seraphina pulls out her phone from her skirts pocket, her hair is grabbed from behind. “Ow” The phone is kicked out of her hand. She can feel pain from her flank. Whoever it is behind her back is punching her real hard.
Seraphina avoids using magic if not necessary. She needs to see if the one who is grabbing her is a mere human or a sorcerer. Injuring a mere human to death with magic is forbidden. Only hurting them might give her problems. Defending herself using magic directly to the human is not wrong, but not the best thing to do. Existence of sorcerer should be kept in secret. She must defends herself, not using her power.
Seraphina grabs the attacker’s hand. A guy’s hand. She push herself towards the attacker and duck under the guy’s shoulder. That forces him to let go of her hair. As soon as she’s free, she goes for the door but it’s locked from outside.
This guy… is not alone.
“Stay away! What do you want!?” She turns to the man. This guy is a mere human. Crap.
“Calm down little miss, I’m here to give you an offer.” The man clears his throat, then continues.
“Refuse the role of Helios leader or die here”
That’s not an offer. I mean...What? How?
“How do you know about this? You are not a sorcerer!” She exclaims
“I’m not but my boss is. But from the look of your face, you don’t seem to agree to my condition. Am I right?”
“Exactly”
“Then I'm sorry to tell you, that you are definitely going to die here.” He pulls out a knife.
A KNIFE. You're here to kill me and yet, you come here with only a knife? What did his boss say about me? Do you even ACTUALLY KNOW what a sorcerer is? I mean--
Suddenly, a brilliant idea come across her mind. She comes up with A PLAN.
come, my pretending skill.
