This comic is set some time in the 1910's and I legitimately don't know how people dealt with pest animals in those days. I assume more brutally. But Pearl and Carolina come from a very wealthy family and probably have never had to kill animals before. Carolina isn't eager to do it, she just wants to spare her sister from having to.
