The sun had already set in surrender. The streets that once basked in sunlight turned dimmer. The bright Tokyo lights were only thing that maintained its luster.
Droplets of rain began to pour. It started light, a mere drizzle which existence was simply ignore. It was only when the downpour got heavier that the passersby started to lift their umbrellas or took shelter somewhere.
”It’s raining hard. The weather forecast is totally off today”, Nobu said while he took a sip of the mocha latte he just ordered. The sip had caused a foamy substance to attach at the corner of his lips. He swept his tongue around his lips, cleaning every trace of the foam.
”I’m not sure if I should call myself lucky for bringing an umbrella or unlucky to spend such one fine night with a man on a coffee shop.”, Eiji replied in ridicule.
After the incident, the 32 year old man returned to the shooting set to find Minami who was acting like an errand boy for the filming crew. Needless to say, Eiji scolded him. At his nervous defense, Minami explained that he only went to comfort room to relieve himself. And when he came back, Eiji was nowhere to be found.
There was nothing else Eiji could do but sigh. He dragged Minami towards the director and together they returned to the office.
”Eiji-san, I thought I’d never see you again”, Nobu replied.
”Same here. When I looked at the list of crew members, I saw your name. I wasn’t sure it was you but I had a doubt”, Eiji said while he stirred the coffee he ordered.
”What a small world huh…By the way Eiji-san, I called you here because I wanted to apologize”, Nobu bowed his head down in sincere apology.
”For that night? I told you just forget about it. That was an accident.”, Eiji took the coffee he was stirring to his mouth, taking a small sip of the black liquid. “It’s bitter.”
”But Eiji-san. You were drunk and I took advantage of your kindness. I don’t want you to think I raped you or something”, Nobu said. His eyes turned watery. Sadness was surely apparent on his young looking face.
”No. I don’t think like that. I quite remember talking to you about my circumstances”, Eiji talked while he took a packet of sugar and poured it all to the coffee, stirring it while he continued “I would have done it with someone else. It didn’t have to be you. That’s why I told you to forget about it.”
”I can’t forget about it. Even if I want to, I just can’t forget about you”, Nobu replied. He wanted something more. Now that Eiji was before him, he didn’t want to let go.
”Nobu-kun. I’m straight. I can’t love a man. Sure, I may get drunk again and I may sleep with you like that. But I don’t think you need someone who will never look at you while sober.”, Eiji took a sip of the coffee. It was mildly sweeter than before.
”I know. I won’t disturb Eiji-san but… can you be my friend?”, Nobu asked. His ears and cheeks turned pinkish. Eiji wasn’t sure if perhaps that was because of the chill from this cold rainy night, or perhaps for another reason. Either way, Eiji thought that was cute… not in a weird way, no homo.
”W-well… friend… friend is fine. We’ll be working together for a few days. I don’t want to work with you with an awkward atmosphere and I totally don’t want the work to be affected.”, Eiji replied with a sigh of relief, followed by a faint smile. He was glad things were working out.
”Thanks Eiji-san. I’ll be in your care.”, Nobu was glad. This time he didn’t want to be thrown away. He had no intention to simply be a friend to Eiji. However, he knew too well what would happen if he start being pushy. That’s why he won’t mess up this second opportunity God gave him. He’ll take it slow and win Eiji’s heart no matter how long it takes!
Eiji didn’t reply. His eyes wandered outside the coffee shop.
”Truly, what a heavy rain.” Eiji said while he took another sip of coffee.
