“The”
When he finally arrived back at her hotel door, he never expected to find her pouring one of many glasses of red wine. She took two long sips before pouring herself another.
Thankfully, the glass she used wasn’t the typical glass one would use. It was much smaller. To some, this would be an important part of the delicacy and they’d never be downing the bottle like she currently was. For a hardworking woman such as herself, it didn’t matter and it became one of the many things that attracted him to her.
Upon seeing him, she lifted the bottle from its spot and shook it, “it was complimentary.”
He didn’t even try to smile at that.
“I’m sorry. I never meant to ruin your night.”
“You didn’t. You didn’t do anything.” She didn’t protest as he slid the bottle out of her reach and take her glass from her grasp. He sipped on it before it too was set out of reach.
“What did he say to you?” She sighed, placing her hand on the glass table to drum her fingers. “You promised to tell me.” He laid a hand over hers, tugging her gently from her seat until she stood.
“He… said, in front of practically everyone, how basically he couldn’t remember my name because you’ve had so many girlfriends and side chicks it was hard to remember names and who was who…” Tears gathered in her eyes.
She had been the guest speaker at the event, working immensely hard on her speech. To have her been publically embarrassed minutes before she was to speak made his blood boil.
“That woman in the bathroom, she said something to you didn’t she?”
“She mentioned what he said to me and asked if it was to get to you.” He knew what she said next was true. “I told her it was to hurt me.” Then, she smiled as she recalled what the stranger had said next, “she advised me to tell them the prick not to use my boyfriend as a mirror.”
He laughed at that, kissing her lightly on the lips. She didn’t ask, but he told her anyway.
“I’ve only had five girlfriends before you. One in high school. Three in college. I guess technically… two flings after college, but you are the longest girlfriend I’ve had.”
“I love you. You don’t have to explain anything to me.” He hummed his disagreement, leading her to the bathroom.
“It’s because I love you that I told you. I swear I’ll debunk or explain anything and everything.” He sat her down in front of the mirror, handing her the makeup wipes as he undid the pins in her hair.
“What are you doing?” She laughed as he gently tugged at her hair, strands cascading randomly.
“Getting you comfy. Unpin your hair, take a quick shower, and hold you all night long.”
Taking a wipe, she laughed once more and began her uncoordinated attempt at removing her eyeshadow, then her mascara, and lastly her foundation.
After a while, she spoke up, “you never are quick.”
He snorted offensively, “excuse you, but I do take quick showers. You’re the one-“
“Not what I meant, love.” He bent to nibble at her earlobe before returning to brush her hair.
