Ian was soon teleported back to where his friends were. When they saw the return of there friend everyone was smiling. Everyone but Nate. They all ran to him to see if anything was different about him. They suddenly asked him multiple questions, but Ian remained mute. The spirit had put a curse on him where he couldn't speak until the game was over.
Suddenly the spirit had appeared. "Sorry for your friend's silence. I didn't want him spoiling the game. Now, who would like to play next? What about you?" Pointing at Mako, the bookworm. Mako replied" very well, I will win this game."
Mako and the spirit then vanished. As soon as they vanished; Nate became quiet and went into a deep thought.
"I feel as though something's not right. Ian should not be here. He should have died. He must have showed some great skill to return here. The Gaijin spirit could just be fooling us and the real Ian is dea…. no no.. why would he do.. Mako is next, what if he decides to betra…. no Mako isn't like that.. he could do....No! No! No! This will work. I must get everyone to play before me. My plan will work! What if the Gaijin decides for me? That's not good. I need this plan to work. I...I...I've come so close. Come down Nate. You can't do anything about this now." While Nate was slowly thinking about his secret plan; Mako would soon find himself thinking deeply as well.
Mako, still amazed that teleportation was even possible, found himself in a very large room. Mako was amazed at how detailed everything was in the room. On the walls he noticed thousands of paintings, statues, and quotes. As a bookworm; Mako seemed to be in heaven. Being in a place this large and detailed brought joy to his heart.
Mako began thinking to himself. "This room has to be over 20,000 Sq. Ft big. It even seems to have no top. How could a place like this be bad. I'm sure Ian's room was even more amazing than this." (Mako continued thinking to himself)." I know everyone is going to have a great time in their rooms. Reina is probably going to have a great hospital or something. Charlotte is going to have a giant kitchen... and Nate is probably going to have.. Actually I don't even know what Nate would want. That's so sad. I don't even know what Nate likes. I'm really bothered by that."
As Mako continued thinking something grabbed his eyes more than anything else. In the distance Mako saw bookshelves that appeared to reach to heaven. Each bookshelf appeared to contain more books than the previous. Mako had never seen something so magnificent. He wondered to himself what knowledge these books possessed.
Unfortunately; before he could walk over to see what the books contained, the spirit appeared to him. " Mako, do you know why your here?" Mako quickly replied, "Of course I do spirit. Your a powerful spirit who was kept under control for many years. You grant the wishes of anyone who frees you and blesses them for all eternity. People have been afraid of you for many years but we know that isn't the case. That's why my crew wanted to set you free." The spirit, laughing himself to death on the inside, smiled and replied. " Well, are you ready to play a game Mako?" Mako replied with an earnest yes.
The spirit then conjured up a beautiful chess board right in front of Mako on the table. When Mako saw the chess board he was very happy. He was a grandmaster of chess and was one of the highest rated players in the world. With pride in his voice he turned to the spirit and spoke," Is this the game that everyone must play to leave this place? If it is. There is no chance I will loose. You must have gone easy on Ian because he's nowhere as good as me. Let's hurry up and play. I want to get to those books."
The spirit, rolling over in his grave on the inside, replied to Mako."Please sit at the table. You see this chess game is different from other games. This board, while beautiful and unique, will be the death of many people." When Mako heard the word death he immediately clenched up. Noticing the reaction of Mako the spirit continued speaking. " I know your a chess grandmaster. The greatest player to ever live. I'm really glad your one of the ones to play me. It's for those reasons I really can't wait to play."
Mako quickly stood up and kicked the table. " I refuse to play this game... and what do you mean people will die. Spirit! Your Insane! Send me back to my friends!" The spirit was very disappointed with his game being disrespected like this. In a rare glimpse of power; the spirit quickly moved his hands and the table and board were perfectly put back in place.
When Mako saw the power of the Spirit; he ran away. For the next three minutes Mako ran down the aisle between the bookshelves. Just when he thought the spirit had lost him; he was teleported right back to the table. The board was still sitting there quietly waiting to be used. The spirit looked at Mako and shook it's head. " Ah, there you are Mako. While you were running I was timing you to see how far you could run. To be quite frank; I'm disappointed. Anyway, let me continue with explaining."
" If I may explain, those pieces right in front of you represent all of the friends and family you have. The rooks represent your parents, the bishops your brother and sister, the knights your favorite two cousins, the Queen your girlfriend, and the pawns are your friends. Ah, and the king represents you. To win the game is very simple. You must checkmate me. However, each time you loose a piece in the game you loose them in real life."
Mako's world was destroyed. He never figured that the one thing he loved the most would be the reason he lost everyone. It was even more of a blow when he remembered his play style was one which sacrificed multiple pieces to checkmate the opponent. Looking at the spirit he said. He said," why spirit, why would you do this? Why would you make me play this game? How can I focus when everyone I love is on the line?"
The spirit, looking uninterested, replied "it's just a game. Isn't that what this is all about?" Mako continued pleading with the spirit. With each cry for mercy the spirit grew more and more uninterested. After finally getting tired of the crying the spirit responded. " Look Mako. You have no choice. Either you play this game or I kill you and everyone."
Mako fell on his knees. " Please spirit, give me a way out. I don't want to loose anyone. Especially my family." The spirit looking more pissed and pissed with each second finally told Mako to shut up.
" Mako, I told you your playing this game. If you want to save your friends you better play a great game. Since I am a fair murderer I've decided to help you out. I will allow you 2 hours to read any book on these bookshelves. There are over two million books here and each one has a name of someone I've killed while playing this game and those that went with them. It also has the strategies they used as well. Good luck, use your time wisely. We'll begin in two hours."
