Juniper had been startled by how the quiet Alex had turned. And she had been even more surprised when Clara explained he was 19. The guy looked barely over 15, still gentle and childish looking, rather than the masculine and straight faces people took when growing up.
-Humans have always been able to create things out of their minds, but there was a time when the human race got split.- Alex spoke, and the water in his hands was blown appart, almoust as if an explosion from the inside had taken place.- When humans imagined an... efficient way to grow food, imagining crops and cattle, imagining wolves as cute little puppies,- Alex stopped and turned arround, as if searching for Onay.
-Ōnāy kukai means Wolf Lair, the founder was said to be able to... well, never mind.- Clara cut her comment short, dismissing it with a hand wave as if had been pulverised and had to be blown away, but Juniper refused to believe it was unimportant.
-...They created this new type of offspring. It was an offspring of spoiled babies, humans with no need to actually imagine much any further. Many though that was it, that was what determined humanity had won this evolutionary race, but many others continued to believe. While the few were well-off thinking they were done, that few bunch went out to be the one with more children, making more and more people settle down, not search for ideas.- Alex's water shapes where barely understandable at this point, taking the shape of small people, some away and sitted, some others walking away.
-Yet the majority who searhched for new, thrilling inventions, was unfortunately the one with less descendants. They dangers they put theirselves into made it hard for them to have more than one child, if one at all. But, their search and determination to keep imagining and exploring is what makes us who we are. It's why we can do things like them. Myths? By our ancestors, and you bet they were real. The more people who joined into thinking them, the better and more realisting those creatures became. Infinite space? May not have existed before, but since we now know it's posible, there's a bigger chance we did it.
Alex's voice took a fast pace, and accelerated and exited one. It was clear in his words that he loved to speak and think about his begginings; the begginings of everyone in the room.
-Everything humans ever had a doubt existed, probably did thanks to them actually imagining it with such passion. And while the few long ago have now taken the majority, while we are scarcingly few, we must remember that we are not a failure, nor a mistake. We are the legacy of brave heroes, of brilliant minds, and of people who dared to defy the game. And even if looking back at your parents, you remember them to be boring, normal, you should be even prouder. You are what they never dared to be, what had been crawling and twitching inside of their souls for so many years. We are prodigious.
Juniper wanted to clap, it was an ussual thing after speeches for her, but nobody did. Charlie raised his hands, but soon lowered them, seeing nobody followed suit.
-That was today's history class,- Alex finished, raising his voice as a few kids complained that history didn't include stuff like modern revolutions, but even a small girl shushed them, raising a finger to her mouth.- And now, everyone go to sleep.- Why even say that, there were more complaints. But Juniper did realize that those complaints were not serious ones. The kids followed the stereotype, of what's supposed to be done, but as soon as they finished their words, they laughed it off.
Clara pulled Juniper's hand, while she saw that Chris invited Charlie to sleep on the top bunk of his bunkbeds. Juno found it odd how some bunkbeds were empty, but when she asked Alex, he explained some children had night shifts or had simply attempted to leave for a night. Juniper wondered if to the city, and she couldn't help but wonder if she would be able to do that. She was probably all over the news, being searched, so she discarded that dream
-Top or bottom?
-Excuse me?- Juniper answered Clara.
-Wanna sleep on the top bunkbed or bottom? Though I'll stay with you to talk until Mary goes to sleep and the fire dies off.- Clara added, pusshing her blonde hair over her left shoulder, pulling a hairband from her wrist and twisting it twice arround her hair.
-Oh, I can sleep at the bottom. I ussualy fall from the bed anyways, so the top would be rather dangerous.- Juniper chuckled, finding it rather funny, but Clara frowned, slightly worried.
-Alright, I'll stay with you.
She guided Juno to a bunkbed and sat over the bottom one, staring at the tent door as Alex left, opening it to let just the tiniest glimpse of moonlight be seen. Yet in that slimpse, both girls could see how Alex aproached a figure.
-Anyways, what was all that from before about Onay kookay and stuff?- Juniper decided to ask. She would not go to sleep with such a mystery in her head.
Clara hesitated, for long, but finnaly decided to lean over and whisper.
-The founder of this place had powers like yours. His name... I don't remember properly. Something like Talaviar? Talaivar. He decided to get us all together, and eventualy, well, continue life. Originaly, people here were meant to life full lives, have children and all, but one day it was attacked from the inside, and people were forced to leave after the age of 20, believing that was when people stopped imagining properly and were most influenced by other people. Or as they used to call them, the Followers. Oposite to Imaginators.
Juniper couldn't really grasp the concept. Who would want to ruin such a safe place, reducing it's numbers and leaving it as weak as ever?
-Who were these "they"? And why hasn't this stopped now that Onay is in charge? Aren't they- And that was when Juniper tied the nots together.
-Onay... They are the decendant of the original attackers. Well, the second one. The first left after being defeated by them, and I was not yet here when that happened.
The whispers where like shouts in the dead silence of the night, and Juniper could only begin to imagine why it had been so easy to get in. If controled by the leader, the powers, similar to the founder of the kukai, could be be watched over. An uprising becoming difficult.
But it could not be so easy to speak and think in such conditions.
The tent door opened, and a masked figure walked inside, towards Juniper.
