Leon thought back as Renee asked that question. He began to reflect. It was five years ago, when Leon started to notice a change in his parents. They had just finish gobbling down, a rabbit stew when suddenly…out of nowhere, they started convulsing. Leon sprang into action along with his wife, Jada.
Leon: Mom, Dad…What’s wrong?
Jada: *chimed in* Yeah, Mrs. Lenore and Mr. Reginald, what’s the matter?
They didn’t reply. Instead they’re eyes turned an eerie red color and they’re perfectly white teeth became coiled and twisted. They were not themselves. They slowly turned into monsters before his very eyes and they kept mumbling incoherently. As Leon inched closer to them, they attacked him. Lenore flung her arms wildly and struck Jada. Reginald tried to pull her down to the floor. Leon thought enough was enough, grabbed his sword and shield. He swung at them. He kept swinging until both of his parents stopped breathing. He was covered in their blood and Jada was horrified. She passed out from shock, and Leon’s world went black as he slumped to the floor, dropping his sword. Hours ticked by and Leon and Jada decided to clean up the mess. They gathered up Leon’s parents and buried them in the forest in nicely dug graves. Leon asked God to forgive him and went back to the house. Jada and Leon resumed cleaning until Renee arrived home from school.
Renee: Hello, big brother…*kissed Leon on the cheek and hugged him* Where’s mother and father?
Leon: *sighed and thought of a lie as tears filled his eyes* Renee, sit down…I should tell you, something.
Renee braced herself for the news and sank to the floor, sobbing.
Flashback ended
Renee: *waving her hand in Leon’s face* Hello….
Leon: *confused* huh?
Renee: Leon, you never answered my question.
Leon: Yes, they were tough to beat. They had a lot of HP and well, the virus made them stronger somewhat.
Renee: That’s weird considering how easily we’re killing the infected animals. Maybe, it’s better attached to humans.
Leon: Maybe…*shakes his head* enough, of that subject…Tell me why are trying to go out of your way to date Sam? *snapped* You don’t even know him.
Renee: Leon, what I do is my business? I do know Sam, I…I love him.
Leon: Renee Elaine Barnes, what you do affects this team? I will not have you screwing up this team. *stepping toward her* Now, retract that declaration of love and you won’t be punished.
Just as Renee was about to say something, the door flung open. Sam stood in the doorway with his mouth agape. His wavy chestnut brown hair hid his dark forest green eyes as he drew a breath. He walked toward Renee and took her in his arms. He spun her around as she giggled with laughter.
Renee: Sammy, stop…My brother is watching us.
Sam: Let him watch, so that he knows I’ll never hurt you.
Leon watched as they ignored his presence. He went back inside the room and closed the door. He slumped in a chair and grumbled, “My little sister has a boyfriend…and can’t even manage to visit my sweet Jada. Where did Mom and Dad go wrong with her?” He sighed, heavily and looked at his lovely wife, whose wounds were healing rather quickly. He completely forgot she was an elf. He started to unwrap her bandages and her eyes were no longer swollen or blacken. Her leg was no longer broken and he thought, “Amazing. She healed quite nicely in a couple of hours.” Jada’s eyes fluttered open and she stretched.
Jada: *yawned* what time is it?
Leon: *kissed her passionately* its 7pm.
Jada: I was asleep all day.
Leon nodded.
Jada: *yawned again and her ears twitched* is that Sam and Renee, I hear…laughing.
Leon: *sighed and grumbled* Yeah, it is. She wants to date that boy.
Jada: *grinned* I knew they would get together. You know, whenever we were camping in the forest, Sam would always stay awake to protect her.
Leon: *drew a frustrated breath* I don’t want to hear any more about this. *kissed her wife on the lips, gently* I’m going to go round up the teens. We need to start packing.
Jada: *smiled widely* Honey, I already packed for all of us. That’s what happen earlier, before I was jumped.
Leon: *laughed* you’re amazing! *kissed her with more passion* I’m so lucky to have you, honey.
He leaned in and embraced her. Jada’s ears twitched again as she heard someone arguing in the hallway.
Jada: *groaned* Leon, go check on Cody and Sarah. Those two are fighting.
Leon: Not again.
He stepped out in the hallway and saw Cody and Sarah kissing passionately.
Leon: *chuckled* Hey you two cut that out.
Cody: We were kissing, it ain’t hurt no one.
Sarah: Yeah, Mr. Barnes…We ain’t hurting nobody.
Leon: *smiled* my wife said that you two were fighting.
Cody: *crossed his arms* we were…We fought over who was the better kisser. My girl, McLane won.
Sarah: *blushed* I ain’t your girl, yet Jameson.
Cody: *pulling her close* Well, you oughta be.
Sarah: *pulling away to talk to Leon* as, you can see…Jameson and I don’t have a beef. *smiled politely*
Leon: Okay. *scurried away from the situation*
Leon turned to corner and saw something surprising. The king of Sapphire Grove was standing outside his bedroom door. His royal assistant was hanging something on the door. The fancy note read, “I, King Francis O’Donovan the Second, hereby degree that anyone who displays mal-action against this elven woman shall be severally punished by exile or worse.” Leon’s eyes started to water. He thought, “How did the king find out so fast?” His thoughts were quickly dismissed, when the king saw him. Leon immediately bowed and didn’t make eye contact.
King Francis: Don’t bow to me, Sir. *grumbled* I hate that.
Leon: Oh, I’m sorry, my liege.
King Francis: *huffed* Katie, tell this man to stop this nonsense.
His royal assistant, Katie stopped what she was doing and rushed to the king’s side. She glared at Leon and used her telepathic powers…to control him. Leon straighten up and the king laughed and slapped Leon on the back.
King Francis: So, what brings you to Sapphire Grove, Leon?
Leon: *replied* My wife, little sister, her friend and I were on our way to Star Falls. But we got sidetracked by a couple of the infected rabbits, sir. *quickly added* and the two new team members.
King Francis: *stroking his beard* I see…. *asked* Why are you headed there?
Leon: *stroked the back of his head and replied* I’m headed there to ---
As soon as Leon was going to complete his sentence, the door to Jada’s room swung open and then Jada, Renee, Sam, Cody and Sarah were all watching the process unfold in front of them. Leon gulped hard and pulled on his collar nervously, before continuing.
Leon: I’m headed there to drop my little sister at my grandparents.
Renee clutched her hand over her mouth and her heart sank. She turned toward Sam, who enraged at the thought that Renee was going to be taking away from him. He stormed over to Leon before anyone could say anything else. He grabbed Leon by his collar.
Sam: What do you mean, Leon?
Leon: *sternly* After the long trip to Star Falls, I’m dropping Renee off.
Renee: *started crying* Why? Don’t you want me?
Leon: *pulling away Sam* Yes, of course I want you, Renee…But at this rate, Grandma and Grandpa are better equipped for taking care of you. I mean they are in Star Falls.
Renee: *eyes watering* I don’t want to go now.
Leon: We’re going and that’s final.
Renee: *anger building in her throat* I hate you.
Renee ran past everyone with tears in her eyes. She didn’t even stop when Sam called after her. She just wanted everyone to leave her alone. She ran out of the Best Inn and darted into the woods. She ran as fast as her legs could carry her. A few minutes later, she stopped running, dropped to her knees and sobbed.
