Renee jumped out of bed and rushed to the bathroom. Sarah had already beat her to it. Renee pounded on the door and Jada covered her head with her pillow.
Renee: *shouted* SARAH, Open this door.
Sarah: *shot back from the other side* you snooze, you lose.
Renee: You aren’t being fair.
Sarah: *snapped, swinging the bathroom door open* I ain’t gotta be fair. You got more hair than me.
Renee: *barged in* I don’t care, who has more hair.
Sarah: *tried to slam door* I ain’t done, yet.
Renee: *whined* It’s my turn.
The two girls continued squabbling until Jada finally snapped. Her hands crackled with little lightning sparks, sending both teens in a state of shock. Jada motioned toward them.
Jada: *slightly angry* Play nice, girls, okay.
Both teens nodded slowly as Jada’s anger subsided. Sarah pulled Renee into the bathroom with her.
Sarah: *closed the door behind her and whispered* what’s wrong with the crazy elf lady?
Renee: Jada doesn’t like humans fighting. Her race is the more peaceful nature. They’d rather see us agreeing than fighting. Oh, and I wouldn’t call her crazy.
Before Renee could say another word, she heard their bedroom door slam. Sarah and Renee peeked out of the bathroom. Jada was gone. Hours flew by and Jada hadn’t returned. Renee and Sarah ran into the boys’ room and told Leon what happened. He immediately decided to not to waste any time. He grabbed his sword and shield with him as he ran out to search for her. Renee, Sam, Cody, and Sarah followed suit. The girls walked along as the boys caught up to Leon. Sarah started to tremble.
Sarah: This is all my fault. I should’ve never called her, crazy.
Renee: No, it’s mine…I should have let her sleep.
Both girls hugged each other as soon the sun was starting to set. They trudged on hand in hand as they stopped dead in their tracks. Renee let out a loud scream as Leon rushed to her side. Leon held Jada in his arms. He looked upon her battered face and broken leg and torn dress.
Leon: *sweetly with tears in his eyes* Honey, who did this to you?
Jada: *tried to open her black swollen eyes and whispered* It was…some of the townsfolk...They didn’t like the fact that I was an elf and they attacked me. I tried to use my new combined attack but they were too--*coughs up blood* Strong.
Leon: *stroking his wife’s pink wavy hair* Shhh, darling! That’s enough. Just rest. *lifted her up with ease and cradled her in his arms* It looks like we’ll have to push back leaving Sapphire Grove until Jada recovers and I should kick some butt in this town.
Sam: *put his hand on Leon’s shoulder* I’ll gladly help with that.
Renee grabbed Sam’s arm and looked at him with tears in her eyes.
Renee: Sammy, please don’t seek revenge. It’s not worth it. Let’s just enjoy our date, tonight.
Leon: *injected before Sam could speak, anger laced in his voice* Renee Elaine Barnes…Have you lost your mind? Jada, my wife and your sister-in-law was attacked…Don’t you think this little outing with Sam, would be called off?
Jada: *weakly* Honey, let the kids have their fun.
Leon: *lowered his head and nuzzled her nose* Okay, darling. It’s just one night.
Renee kissed both Leon and Jada on the cheek and ran off with Sarah back to the Inn. The boys followed suit. A few minutes later, Renee looked at herself in the mirror and glanced over at Sarah. They looked cute in their dresses. Renee fiddled with her bracelet as she decided to wear it as a ponytail holder, instead. Sarah huffed and motioned to help Renee. She silently cursed herself for telling the girl that she had too much hair.
Sarah: There. *making the final adjustments to Renee’s hair*
Renee: Thanks!
Sarah: You’re mighty welcome, Renee.
A few seconds later, there was banging sound on the door.
Cody: *banged on the door* Are you girls ready yet? This dang-gum tie is making my neck sweat.
Sarah: *pulled the door open* Dang it, boy…Can’t you wait a---
Her words trailed off as she caught herself blushing at Cody as he did the same. Cody was decked out in his black signature cowboy hat, a light green button down shirt, navy blue denim jeans and a black necktie. Cody tipped his cowboy hat as he took her hand.
Cody: Well, you look mighty pretty, Miss McLane.
Sarah: You ain’t looking too bad, yourself…Jameson.
They failed to notice Renee and Sam off in their world. Sam stared lovingly at Renee. She noticed he was wearing that argyle sweater vest, she brought for him, a few months ago, it’s amazing, it still fits.
Sam: *blushed* Renee, you look beautiful as always.
Renee: *blushed* Thanks, Sammy. *lightly kissed his cheek* You look handsome.
Sam: *blushed and gulped* Ready to go?
Renee nodded and closed the door behind her.
Renee: Before we continue this date, let’s go check on Jada.
Sam, Cody and Sarah agreed and followed Renee to the adjoining room. All of them peeked their heads in and saw that Jada was all bandaged up now and Leon sleeping in a chair next to her. He looked worn out and a bit bruised like he’d been fighting. Renee smiled slightly. She thought, “Way to go, Big brother.” She gently closed their door and turned toward Sam. She grabbed his hand and led him ahead of the others outside the inn.
The couples ran into the town plaza, soft music filled the air. Cody took Sarah’s hand.
Cody: *sweetly* Would you care to dance, little lady?
Sarah: *playfully pouted* Boy, I ain’t little. But I guess one tiny shindig can’t hurt none.
Cody: Led the way, McLane.
Sarah: Gladly.
The two-slow danced the night away, while Renee and Sam were off looking at weapons and fawning over all of them. The couples eventually met back up the Inn. Each date was a success. Both boys walked the girls to their room and kissed them, lightly on the lips before heading to their respective room. Sam got to his room, he noticed a note on the door from Annie. It read, “See me immediately.” Sam grabbed the note and ran downstairs. He ran directly into Annie. The two collided and stumbled into an awkward position. Annie blushed.
Annie: I’m sorry, Sir.
Sam: *blushed and helped her up* No, I’m sorry. I got your note.
Annie: *remembering the note* Oh. That was to pay for all the bandages, I supplied earlier. See. *flips note over*
Sam: *shocked at the price* Geez, that’s a lot of coins. *anger building in his throat* I mean 5,000 coins.
Annie: *calmly stated* If you can’t pay it, then I suggest you leave.
Sam: *grumbled as he digs through his pockets and with a scowl on his face* 5,000 coins…Bleh. I hate these prices.
Annie waited patiently for the teen to retrieve the money. Minutes ticked by and Sam pulled out the money and handed it to Annie.
Annie: *smiled with delight as she took the coins* Thank you and have a nice stay at Best Inn.
She turned on her heel and waltzed off toward the kitchen. Sam grumbled as he walked back to his room and tossed the note in the trash. He thought, once he reached his bed and stretched out, “Renee, when will I get to take you out, again?” Sam was startled by a soft knock on his door. He reached to the door but before he could get there, Leon beat him to it. Sam stood in the shadows, overhearing the conversation.
Leon: *sighed* what now? Can’t you see that my wife is – Oh, Renee…It’s you.
Renee: Who else, would it be? I came over here to check on my sister-in-law. *came in the room*
Leon: *shutting the door behind him and turned to her, frowning* Are you sure, it isn’t because that boy?
Renee: *blushed and stomped her foot* Leave Sam out of this. *sighed* besides…he and I are just—
Leon: Just, what? *scowling and his anger more evident*
Renee: *sighed* we’re just friends.
When Sam heard that; he made his presence known. Renee saw him and she immediately looked down at the floor. Leon had a smirk on his face.
Sam: *stepped toward Renee, never taking his eyes off her* Do you think, we’re just friends?
Renee blushed as Sam cupped her face in his hands.
Sam: *sweetly* Renee, look at me.
Renee looked at him and her eyes filled with tears.
Renee: *trying to pull away from him* Sammy, I like you but I’m new to the whole dating thing…I mean I never even had a boyfriend.
Sam: *laughed* Ah, you goofball…I’m new to this dating thing too. Heck, I was going to ask you to be my girlfriend, a long time ago.
Renee: *gasped* Really? What stopped you?
Sam looked in Leon’s direction and Renee got the hint.
Renee: *smiled* Well, I guess I don’t need his approval…
Sam: *confused* Approval for what?
Renee: This. *flung her arms gently around him and kissed him lightly on the lips*
Sam was shocked, Renee never showed this side of her…He liked it, a lot. Leon stomped over to them, boiling over with anger. Renee jumped back and Leon grabbed her arm.
Leon: *hissed* Let’s go outside, now…Missy.
Renee: *rolled her eyes at Leon*
Leon slammed the door as the two of them exited.
Leon: *steaming with anger* Renee, I have had it up to here with this attitude of yours. Its needs to stop.
Renee: Bring back our parents and I will.
Leon broke down and cried. Renee immediately got very concerned. Her brother never cried. Her harsh tone softens as she hugged Leon.
Leon: *sniffled* Renee, I couldn’t let them attack me or my wife. I couldn’t *voice breaking* I couldn’t let them attack and infect you, either. So, when you were away at school… They contracted the virus through cooking an infected rabbit, I took my shot. *starting softly sobbing*
Renee: *gasped* they ate a rabbit…
Leon: Yeah…*snapped* didn’t I just tell you that?
Renee: So, what happened?
Leon: Well, I fought them, what do you except?
Renee: What did you fight them with?
Leon: *replied* what else, my sword and shield.
Renee: Were they tough to beat?
