Sam started to help Renee up, but Jada and Sarah jumped in. He watched as Jada and Sarah helped her out of the saloon. Leon motioned to talk to Cody and Sam.
Leon: *cleared his throat* Sam, meet your new battle partner. *looked at Cody*
Both boys: *shouted simultaneously* What? I’m not working with him…*pointing at each other*
Leon: *sighed and demanded* Be quiet. *glared at Cody* You could’ve killed my sister with that stunt you pulled. I didn’t even know she was poisoned until your girlfriend came running into the Inn looking for help.
Cody: *blushed and mumbled* Sarah ain’t my girl. She’s just a…
Leon: *sighed cutting Cody off* I don’t care what you call your relationship. *turned to Sam and glared at him* And you were supposed to protect her.
Sam: I was knocked out at the time. When I came too, Renee had lunged at Sarah. I tried to stop it and this guy…*pointing at Cody* Tried to escalate the situation.
Cody: *glared at Sam* I ain’t done nothing. *crossed his arms*
Sam: *shouted* You pulled a knife on my girl—
Cody: *spat* Say that again, pal. Cuz I ain’t done nothing.
The boys got up in each other’s face and Leon swiftly moved into action.
Leon: *pulled the two teens by their ears* That’s enough of this nonsense.
Sam: You’re hurting me, let go…Leon.
Cody: *agreed* Yeah, what he said. I’ll work with y’all. Just let my ear go.
Leon released each ear and smiled.
Cody: *rubbing his ear and asked* Is Sarah a part of this team as well?
Sam: *smiled and rubbed his ear* Of course, she is.
Cody: *confused* Why do you want us on the team?
Sam: Well, your friend, Sarah reminds me of someone I lost a long time ago.
Cody: *asked* Who is that?
Sam: My little sister, Juniper.
Cody: I’m sorry to hear that, man.
Sam: *sighed* Don’t be…I’ll tell you that story, someday.
Cody: *unfolded his arms and laughed* I reckon since we’re a team, now…Share your story, bud and I’ll share mine.
Sam shifted uneasily as Leon urged him to share.
Leon: Sam, I’ll be at the inn, if you need me.
Sam nodded and waited for Leon to leave. Once Leon disappeared from the saloon, Sam slowly divulged his story, Cody’s heart sank. He pounded his fist against the wall and that caused Sam to jump.
Cody: *angrily* I had no idea that Sarah’s parents experiment evolved that quickly. How did your family contract the virus?
Sam: *started to get teary-eyed and reflected* My sister unbeknownst to her brought home an infected rabbit. The girl was five years old. She didn’t know any better. It was then that I noticed a change in everyone.
Cody: Your family experienced that, too.
Sam: *nodded and then asked* Wait, what do you mean?
Cody: My parents died in a fire when I was a tyke. I was taken in by several kinfolks. They didn’t pay me much mind though. Then one day, I received a letter from Sarah about her town and rushed over to be with her. I ain’t never seen that girl cry over nothing. But that day broke my heart. That’s when I told my kin, what her parents did and they disowned me, said I’d be better off dead. My kin changed on me as well and for the worse. *blushed* I’d been with Sarah ever since. We trained with our weapons every night and slept during the day in the trees.
Sam: Sarah was a childhood friend of yours.
Cody: Yeah, I known her since we were kids.
Sam: So, what ever happen to your relatives?
Cody: Shoot, I don’t know and I don’t care. I reckon those crazy fur balls got them, though. They can’t hunt, worth a dang.
Sam: *chuckled* Serves them right for treating you so harshly.
Cody: Yeah, you ready to leave this pigsty, bud. *extended his hand*
Sam: *shook it* Sure thing, friend.
The teens left the saloon.
