I followed her quietly. My aim was that so she wouldn’t notice me. She had apparently thought the threat was over as she only went back to her position on the couch and turned the television back on.
As her awareness of me faded away so did my control of my actions. The voices singing dominated my mind. I could hear my own thoughts locked away in a small part of my mind.
Go out the back door Maggie . . . get away from the old hag . . . she’s full of mysteries you should be kept safe from . . . you’re in peril love.
I clutched my head and banged it against the wall.
“Maggie? Are you all right?” Matilda called up.
“I’m fine.” I spat out. I could still hear them whispering around me. I could hear the beckoning in the lullaby. I broke into a run. My heart couldn’t take it anymore.
I bolted to the backdoor and swung it open. I felt like my body was no longer my own, lulled into the bidding of whatever was now my master. The strings that were controlling me come from whatever the voices belonged to in front of me.
Still there, I didn’t stop. Matilda had heard all the ruckus and her thundering foosteps echoed on the kitchen’s wood as I stepped onto the back porch. My mouth turned up in a smile as I slammed the door in her face and pulled the lock. I don’t know what the purpose of this lock was from the outside, I’d always thought it curious but never bothered to ask. The voices in my head told me I would soon find out.
The rain was streaming off of the side of the roof and like a curtain impeded my view. I could hear Great Aunt Matilda screaming and pounding on the door behind me. It was nice, I had shut her out of my solo adventure.
The thunder reverberated against the sky as my bare feet sank into the cold wet sand. The rain seeped into my clothing drenching me to the bone. But I didn’t care much. My objective was always in my mind to find the shadows and the source of the beautiful voices.
The song came again. The notes dancing from high to low. It was so beautiful I wanted to cry.
My feet thunded against the ground in urgency. I tripped into a and saw a red stream of blood spout from my ankle. I didn’t care as pain radiated from my ankle. I needed to get there, they were calling for me.
Ahead of me I could see a tide pool which which had only filled up temporarily from the water overfill from the storm There I could see where the voices were bidding me foward.
The three heads turned toward me and I wanted to scream. Red. Red eyes in a sunken green fishy human face. The cheeks were sunken in and the small sharp teeth were bared. I couldn’t believe what the face was connected to . . . a perfect woman’s body.
Their smiles deepened and one of them hissed softly in anticipation as my steady pace towards them continued. Another slapped it’s tail against the ground. Their eyes bore into my mind. Their haunting song continuing to becon to me. I couldn’t ignore them.
I stepped into the tide pool and squatted onto a rock submerged in the pool. My clothes already damp, now became completely soaked.
Their hands immediately came to my body. It’s like I’m encased in irons. Then I notice. Below where their hips should form into legs are tails covered in silvery blue and green scales.
They had claws as well that raked my short night shirt with gashes.
One grabbed my foot and started to lick the exposed wound. It stung. I made a sound of being in pain and she flashed her sharp teeth.
I gasped, “No please.”
She sank her teeth into my foot. It was like I was made out of cheese. I could see the blood oozing from my leg, but my body didn’t register it as anything more than growing numbness. Then, the two dove at her with fits and screams. They started tearing at each other and I started to drag myself back.
