*Kylar's POV*
I walked into the deserted park and sat down on the single bench next to a woman while Fall was at her therapy session. The silence and pain between us was almost unbearable, and she gave a sad sigh.
“You know, since we were kids, I always hoped you’d never leave me behind.” She spoke, and her words pained me to hear. I cared for her deeply, but the decisions I made were what was best for both Fall and I. I knew she understood this, but the gap that still lied between us pained me even still.
“Don’t be like this Al. You know I’d never leave you behind. If I did, I wouldn’t still meet you secretly like this, risking my life.” Turning towards her, she kept her eyes on the sky. I knew she missed it, but she made her choice, a long time ago. Those same eyes, that locked with mine on the battlefield, she was hurt by my decision, but she knew how much she meant to me.
“It’s not that Kylar. We aren’t kids anymore; you know my feelings have changed. You’re my brother at heart, but it just feels like you avoid me.” Al sighed and finally turned towards me, her pearlescent pink eyes shining in the light. Even her wings were tinted that pearly white with the pink pulsing where the bones glowed. “You are the only one who still thinks of the past, which is why I know you are desperate, otherwise you wouldn’t have called me here today.” Her words rang true. I was desperate; I didn’t have anyone else to turn to for this favor.
“Al...if the time comes...I need you to protect Fall.” It pained me to ask this of her, because of our history together. I was never able to love her the way she wanted, and now that we were older, we were more like siblings than we were before. But still, it was an awfully painful request.
Al sighed, her gaze now leaving me, looking up to the sky. “You know... I always question Haven.” It had been a while since I heard the word out of anyone's mouth aside from my own. Humans called it Heaven, a place where angels resided with their own; but to angels, it was called Haven. “That day...I’ll never forget it. When you left the battlefield...you got out easy Kylar.” The pain lurked on Al’s face. I knew the angels who stayed behind to continue the fight had a hard time standing against the non-stop flood of angels from Haven’s side, but Al must’ve suffered the most.
Al lost everything important to her. Her family, her halo, and her beautiful wings were torn from her back, even when they grew back, they tortured her. They held her captive, as the leader, leading the rogue angel war, ripping her wings off every single time they grew back. She watched the people she loved die before her eyes because she felt wronged in the world she lived. All because I fell in love with the human I was assigned to protect.
“You know how much you mean to me Al; I won’t let them harm you again.” My words made her laugh. The pain lied underneath it all in her heart, and it was so painfully obvious.
“I think I’m more than capable of protecting myself.” Al gave another soft chuckle before turning towards me, crystal-like tears forming at the corners of her eyes. “Don’t worry, I’ll protect her because you’re my brother; which makes her my sister-in-law, and family protects one another to the bitter end..” Pain lined with her voice as she spoke, and she held back her tears as best as she could.
A silence grew between us again. I’m sorry Al that we have to live away from each other like this. I know I’m your only family left, and I can’t be with you, but it’s the best for both of us. I would only lead the government angels directly to you.
Standing up, I blocked the sun from Al’s face and smiled down at her, though her eyes were closed. “You can go...I want to bath in the sunlight a bit longer before I go back into hiding.” Al’s voice sounded hurt, as she kept her eyes locked tightly shut. I didn’t move an inch and just stared at her, absorbing her beauty. My beautiful little sister, Al...what would I do without you?
Moving out of the sunlight I started to walk away. I gave one last glance back at her; she hadn’t moved even a centimeter. This might be the last time we get to talk Al, and there is just one last thing I want you to know.
“Al!” As I shouted, she jumped at the sound of my voice, looking at me startled. “I love you, my adorable sister. You’re the most badass girl I know!!” She rolled her eyes and gave a small smile before leaning back and closing her eyes again. I hope you live a happy life, and that one day, you forget about the painful past, even if you claim you have, I know every day it haunts you. Be happy Al, and don’t ever let anyone put out the beautiful light that is you.
