*Fall's POV*
“The painting you see here before you was titled ‘Forbidden Wings’. The artist gave the two in the painting such a sad story and claims it’s true, but no one knows where the origin actually came from.” Kylar and I walked along, following an art exhibit tour. Our guide stopped in front of a painting of a man with wings, a woman at his feet, dead. Both faces were hard to distinguish, but the pain in the angel's face was heartbreakingly evident.
“So what’s the story?” A woman in our group rushed to the question everyone was wondering.
“In a hurry are we? I was just about to get to it!” Our guide jokingly laughed, noticing everyone was curious about the sad story that was behind the beautiful painting. “It is said that the angel fell in love with a mortal, but the rest of Heaven was jealous of their love, so they forbid it. Heaven deemed the mortal to die. To ensure his lover died with a happy memory at her last breath, the angel killed her himself.”
Everyone moaned painfully for the two lovers. Even I felt the pain of the two, forced to separate. Biting my lip, I looked at the painting intensely, taking it all in.
“Is that all?” One man chimed in. It did seem as though there was more, but what more could there be?
“Ah, you are smart! There is more!” The guide happily chimed in, clapping his hands together once for emphasis as he spoke. “Shortly after the angel killed his lover, he started a war against Heaven. His accusation was that Heaven claimed to love all, but in a moment of jealousy and hypocrisy, tore apart two people who loved each other dearly. Many angels agreed with the man, as they didn't feel the same jealousy that the rest did. This caused a rift in Heaven, separating many families. The angels couldn’t bear staying in that type of unfair world, but couldn’t exactly go down to Hell, as it didn’t fit their morals. Though it was forbidden and is hard to do, the angels came to the mortal world to live among the humans.”
The entire group was quiet and nodded slowly. While everyone else moved on, I still stared at the painting, my heart aching. Giving a deep sigh, I wasn’t sure what about this painting was so alluring to me. I was usually more drawn to nature paintings. I just couldn't put my finger on what was so intriguing about this specific painting.
“What is it?” Kylar’s voice snapped me from my intense gaze. Looking up at him, I gave a soft smile. “What are you thinking about so intensely?”
“Who do you think was in more pain? The angel or the woman?” The question finally came out. I couldn't be the only one questioning it.
“I think the woman. She must’ve felt betrayed that the angel would follow through with Heaven’s orders and kill her. Though, maybe that’s not the actual story. Even if it wasn’t, she still must’ve been in more pain.” Kylar’s words shocked me. My eyes widened before I turned back to the painting, sorrow filling my heart even more.
“Really? I think it was the angel. I can’t even imagine the conflict he must have felt, along with the pain. He had to choose between his family and his love. Even though he chose his family, he still had to watch the love of his life take her last breath before his hands. In the end, he still went against his family, and he lost everything.” Sighing, I turned back to Kylar. After this painting, I didn’t know if I could handle any more sad stories. Most paintings were pitiful or just dull.
“Come on; I’ll take you home.” Kylar must have noticed my sorrow as he placed his hands on my shoulders, lifting my cardigan higher up on my shoulders and guiding me to the exit. However, I couldn't get the painting off my mind.
“Well, I'm sorry to say, but our adventure ends here for today.” Kylar opened my door and helped me out of the car. It had already been a few weeks since I had left the hospital and ‘met’ Kylar, but it already felt so natural to be with him like this. Grabbing his outstretched hand, he lifted me out of the seat and closed the door behind me.
We walked up to the front door, and I stood on the step before turning around to face Kylar. He smiled at me before his face turned more serious and his hand reached out towards my face, moving a strand of my hair behind my ear, and then smiling at me once more. My heart was racing rapidly; I was almost sure he could audibly hear it. Even my stomach felt warm and fuzzy.
“I’ll see you again tomorrow okay?” Kylar gave another smile as I nodded and he turned around to walk away. Watching him leave was too painful. For some reason, even seeing him walk towards the car made my heart ache for him to turn around and come back. Instinctively, I reached out and grabbed his forearm. Turning around with concern, I didn’t even give him a chance to ask. Wrapping my arms around his shoulders, I pulled him close to me and pressed my lips to his.
Time. It stopped. Though my eyes were squeezed together tight, they felt wide open. Just then, memories flashed behind the backs of my lids. Memories of….Kylar.
“Are you okay?” Pulling away from the kiss, Kylar held my forearms and smiled at me. I felt frozen. No...there’s no way. This...it..it can’t be real. “Hey! Fall..?” Kylar’s voice rang in my ears; it sounded far away even though he was right in front of me.
Coming to my senses I looked at him again, my eyes now landing on the figures behind him...they were huge. My eyes followed the lines of them, going up and out. They were gorgeous...his...wings. White with gold lining the bones of them. Kylar...that’s right. You...you’re an angel. My Guardian Angel.
“Yeah, I’m fine...sorry if I startled you. That must’ve been so sudden, but to me, it just felt… right.” Apologizing, I tried to keep my eyes off his wings. Why can’t I tell him? I remember him. Our memories together, they were there, but something was missing. When I find that out, I’ll tell him. Our love was forbidden in his world and he was protecting me from them. They wanted him dead for his sins. I’m sorry Kylar but I need to protect you...and this is the only way I know how to do that.
